NOTE ON ORTHOGRAPHY The orthography used for Creole words in this dissertation was developed by my colleague Ron Kephart for the Carricou Literacy Project. Many, and frequently inconsistent, orthographies are currently in use for Haitian Creole. These orthographies have been developed, more often than not, with Standard French or Standard English ("Export English" or "Export French" in Kephart' s terminology) rather than Creole speakers in mind. Consequently, they have usually been an obstacle to the advancement of literacy among native Creole speakers. This includes, I believe, the Haitian governmental agency approved orthography for Creole, generally refered to by that agency's acronym, ONEC With Kephart's assistance, I have used his orthography to render the Creole terms used herein into the dialect of northern Haiti. The Kephart orthography is valuable not only because it can express dialectical differences in Haitian Creole but it is equally useful for all Caribbean Creole languages. Because of its simplicity it is exceedingly practical. It has also proven to be immediately understandable for both English and French Creole speakers on the island of Carricou in the Lesser Antilles (Grenada). All Creole words contained herein are written in the singular. Plurality of Creole words is to be determined by context. Hay May, 1985 Chairman: Dr. Charles Wagley Major Department: Anthropology Though many studies have been made of the plantation's persistence in the New World, scholars have, for the most part, neglected the study of the plantation's legacy in peasant Afro-America. This dissertation investigates the phenomenon of community formation and evolution in post-bellum Afro-America. To this end, an ethnohistory of an Haitian fishing village is presented. It examines the formation and growth of the community and its organization in terms of its family life, economics, political system, religion and worldview. The social and economic impact of the recent introduction of tourism is considered. A life history of a village man is included for the purpose of elucidating the ways in which an individual interacts with his community and culture. Using Charles Wagley's concept of a Plantation America cultural sphere, the contemporary and historical cultural .

Cruikshank A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in SPANISH AND LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies University of Alberta © Stephen A. Cruikshank, 2018 ii Abstract The "mulata affect" may be understood as the repetitive process and movement of power and affect qualified in the mulata image over time. Through a lens of affect theory this study seeks to analyse how the mulata image in Cuba has historically been affected by, and likewise affected, cultural expressions and artistic representations. Relying on a theory of "bioremediation" this study proposes that the racialized body of the mulata, which is remediated through artistic images, consistently holds the potential to affect both national and exotic interpretations of her body and of Cuban culture. Four different artistic expressions of the mulata image are discussed. Beginning in the early twentieth century various artistic mediums are explored in the contexts of the mulata in the paintings of Carlos Enríquez's and the rumbera [rumba dancer] in the graphic illustrations of Conrado Massaguer. In addition, images of the miliciana [the militant woman] in the photography of Alberto Korda following the onset of Cuban Revolution and the jinetera [the sex-worker] in Daniel Díaz Torres film La película de Ana (2012) are discussed. Through an analysis of these four different expressions of the mulata body, this study seeks to expose a genealogy of the mulata image in art and, in doing so, reveal the ongoing visual changes and affective workings of the racialized female body that has contributed to the designations of Cuban culture and identity over time.

Lowe: After God is Music: Affliction, Healing, and Warfare in Haitian Pentecostalism (Under the direction of Todd Ramón Ochoa) This dissertation explores a version of Pentecostal-charismatic Christianity in Haiti popularly known as Lame Selès (Fr. L’Armée Celeste), or “The Heavenly Army.” Within Haiti’s Protestant population more broadly, these independent Pentecostal communities are often viewed with suspicion and accused of being charlatans or practitioners of Vodou in a Christian guise on account of their combinatory ritual practices and musical styles. Based on data drawn from fieldwork among some of these communities in Port-de-Paix, Haiti, I argue that these independent Pentecostal communities are an important site of the kind of religious combination that has long characterized religion in Haiti and the Black Atlantic world. Drawing on resources within the “hot” and combative Petwo style of Vodou and combining it with “spiritual warfare” discourse drawn from global Pentecostal and charismatic Christian culture, these communities use music and divine healing to engage and attack spiritual sources of affliction common among the poor majority in contemporary Haiti, ranging from bodily and mental illness to anxiety and officially sanctioned injustice.

    ABSTRACT Writing Race in Haiti’s Constitutions: Synecdoche and Negritude in Post-Revolutionary Haiti Scott Koslow, M.A. Mentor: Scott Varda, Ph.D. All political universals rely on a synecdoche in which a part of the population is taken to represent the whole. Modernity is characterized by a white supremacist synecdoche that selects the white portion of a population to stand in for the whole population. Haiti’s early constitutions invert this synecdoche, picking out the black population as representative of the whole. This thesis analyzes Haiti’s 1805, 1806, 1807, and 1816 Constitutions for this synecdochal inversion. These synecdoches rearticulate Modernity in a way that frustrates Modernity’s white supremacist foundation. Because of this, Haiti’s early constitutions are rich resources for negritude.
