PROGRAM & PROFILE BUILDING SMART ECo-PrODUCTS What does going green mean? Basically, going green is about maintaining the natural ecological balance in the environment, and preserving the planet and its natural systems and resources. It also means taking steps, whether big or small, to minimize the harm you do to the environment (including the carbon footprints you leave behind), as a result of inhabiting this planet. Going Green is a trend with a variety of benefits for business owners. Applying green processes to the workplace creates a healthy environment for employees, reduces unnecessary waste and recognizes the role that businesses play in leading the way for social change. For the business that is thinking about going green, a variety of reasons exist to take the plunge. Going Green in Africa There is growing urgency in the need for Africa to speed up the adoption of resource efficient production practices and progressively restructure away from energy intensive industries towards new green industries, which are financially viable and internationally competitive in the long run Going Green is about seizing the opportunity - to build international competitiveness, new economic infrastructure, sectors and activity; create prosperity and jobs; transform our economy and society; reduce poverty; improve health and quality of life for all. Erosion, land fragmentation and population growth are some of the factors that exacerbate the impact of climate change. In response, Cordaid developed the Drought Cycle Management toolkit (with IIRR and ACACIA Consultants) and the Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction training manual to link relief and development. The Drought Cycle Management toolkit helps planning for the right activities at the right time in semi- arid areas. Doing this effectively requires flexibility in implementation of activities and allocating resources. The Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction framework focuses on building resilience and helps to determine the degree of risks communities are exposed to, their capacities and reasons for their vulnerability, followed by a development plan to reduce risks and a contingency plan to be activated when the hazard strikes. Climate change contributes to increased frequency and intensity of natural disasters, including drought and floods. Thus, climate change adaptation should be taken up at different levels through disaster risk reduction measures at local, national and global level. Cordaid works at all levels, though specific program interventions and capacity building at field level and through advocacy nationally and internationally. Projects supported by Cordaid combine Disaster Risk Reduction, Sustainable Ecosystem Management and Climate Adaptation. Contact details: Cordaid Ethiopia DRM Programme P.O.
