ICF stall was visited by Shri. Piyush Goyal Honourable MR and C R B . M a n y d i g n i t a r i e s appreciated the efforts taken by ICF. Delegates from the Czech Republic under the leadership of Shri. Milan Hovorka, Czech Ambassador, New Delhi, visited ICF on 10.10.2017. The delegates visited shop floor and held discussions with ICF Member Rolling Stock visited ICF officials. Shri. Ravindra Gupta, Member Rolling Stock, visited ICF on 05.10.2017. He inspected the 1st indigenous LHB coach, inaugurated the upgraded electrical repair Shop/Shell and the Fruit Orchard at TTC. He also addressed the officers and office bearers of unions & associations. Fruit Orchard park between BTC (TTC) and ICF Lake was inaugurated by Shri. M.Venkatesan, Sr.Tech in the presence of Shri. Ravindra Gupta, Member Rolling Stock and ICF’s team of Officers & Staff on 05.10.2017. It has a Fruit Orchard SJAB ICF celebrated “Gandhi Jayanthi” at Railway Hospital station. The station has wall paintings with artistic sceneries ICF on 02.10.2017. Members took National Solidarity pledge. such as second class train standing with people of India from different states looking from the windows, a zigzag puzzle building in which a demon is coming out from the windows, a big size camera showing photos of the structures and many more. And lots of variety of fruit trees are planted . Don't miss it; come and enjoy yourselves. Dining Hall of Dr. Ambedkar Arangam was inaugurated by Shri. Ravindra Gupta, Member Rolling Stock and ICF’s team of Officers & Staff on 05.10.2017. Sand and Spray Shed near LHB Unit was inaugurated by Shri. K.E.Vijayakumar, Sr.Tech/Shop-18, in the presence of ICF’s team of Officers and Staff on 04.10.2017 Technical handbook on ‘welding principles’ was released by Shri. P.Raman, Sr.Tech, in the presence of ICF’s team of Officers and Staff on 28.10.2017 The Birth Anniversary of Late Sardar Vallabhai Patel was observed as “Rashtriya Ekta Diwas” (National Unity day). On 31.10.2017, CME administered Rashtriya Ekta Diwas pledge to the Staff and Officers followed by march past by RPF. CME flagged off “Run for Unity” in which ICF employees, officers, family members, scouts and guides, sports persons, TTC trainees, ICF school children, and other social groups participated. CMT lab of ICF has received NABL certificate of Renovated Bogie Frame Shop (Shop-23)/Shell was inaugurated by Shri. R.Rajasekaran, WM/Bogie, in the presence of ICF’s accreditation for complying with ISO/IEC:17025:2005 team of Officers and Staff on 28.10.2017 standards for Chemical, Mechanical and Non-destructive testing.     DISTRICT PROFILE - 2017 CHENNAI DISTRICT ORIGIN OF CHENNAI Chennai, originally known as Madras Patnam, was located in the province of Tondaimandalam, an area lying between Pennar river of Nellore and the Pennar river of Cuddalore. Following the independence of India, Chennai became the capital of Tamil Nadu and an important centre of regional politics that tended to bank on the Dravidian identity of the populace. According to the provisional results of 2011 census, the city had 4.68 million residents making it the sixth most populous city in India; the urban agglomeration, which comprises the city and its suburbs, was home to approximately 8.9 million, making it the fourth most populous metropolitan area in the country and 31st largest urban area in the world.

Steam Loco at RIGA Paala State Monorail Tramway The Paala State Monorail Tramway (PSMT) was a unique rail system constructed by Maharaja Sir Bhupinder Singh of Paala for movement of people and goods in his state. It operated in Paala state between 1907 and 1927. PSMT was based on the Ewing system wherein rail-guided vehicles use a balancing wheel for balancing. 95% of the load is taken by the single rail and the remaining 5% by the balancing wheel. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 ABSTRACT Infrastructures, being technological networks that form the structural and social scaffolding of cities, have been symbiotic with modern urban development. Building on their socio-technical character, this thesis seeks to understand the technological mediation of political formations and environmental knowledges that shape notions of urban sustainability. It takes as its point of departure the construction of reverse osmosis desalination plants to augment water supply in two cities across the global South and North – Chennai, India and London, UK. It uses the analytic of infrastructure to excavate the complex reasons as to why and how desalination plants came to be built in these cities. Over a period of 10 months, oral and documentary narratives were gathered from institutions, professionals and citizens involved in water supply and access in the two cities. Based on a comparative reading of these texts and ethnographic field notes, the thesis focuses on the state and engineering practices as significant determinants of urban techno-natures. It demonstrates that infrastructures provide a mode of articulating statehood through mediation between technology, nature and society. It traces how engineers and other water professionals, through their everyday work, socialise those water systems, cultivating popular environmental knowledges.
