As nationalism and nativism rise across the globe, my cyber world is under siege. I am not complaining. Powerful images posted online from art biennials have stayed with me: Venice, Berlin, Dak’Art (Dakar, Senegal) and Art X in Lagos, Nigeria. Memorable, startling art, love- infused, aiming to transform the way I, we, see all kinds of difference: gender, race, culture and ability. Rarely can art claim immediate transformative power; what it can do is capture the imagination and plant seeds for a conversation and perhaps – ultimately – a conversion. Participants Biographies Ayobami Adebayo (Nigeria) Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀ has written for Wasafiri, Elle, the BBC, LitHub and The Guardian (UK) amongst others. She has received fellowships and residencies from Ledig House, Sinthian Cultural Centre, Hedgebrook, Ox-bow School of Arts, and Ebedi Hills. She holds BA and MA degrees in Literature in English from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife. She is the author of Stay With Me, which was shortlisted for the Kwani Manuscript Project as a work in progress in 2013. After it was published in 2017, it was shortlisted for the Baileys Prize for Women’s Fiction and the 9mobile Prize for Literature. It has also been longlisted for the International Dylan Thomas Prize and the Wellcome Book Prize. Stay With Me was named a Notable Book of the Year by The New York Times and a Best Book of the Year by The Guardian, The Economist, The Wall Street Journal and many other publications. Doctoral Dissertations. 493. https://opencommons.uconn.edu/dissertations/493 Writing About Writing: African Women’s Epistolary Narratives Suzanne Marie Ondrus, PhD University of Connecticut, [2014] This dissertation examines the following six Anglophone and Francophone African diasporic novels: So Long a Letter ( Une si longue lettre ) by Mariama Bâ (Senegalese), Juletane by Myriam Warner-Vieyra (fifty-year resident of Senegal, originally from Guadeloupe), Imagine This by Sade Adeniran (Nigerian living in the U.K.), Going Solo and To a Young Woman by Hope Keshubi (Ugandan), and Zenzele: A Letter for my Daughter by J. Nozipo Maraire (Zimbabwean living in the U.S.). This dissertation argues that the detailed characterization of the writing narrators cultivates intimacy, making these works worthy of serious literary consideration. Starting from book reviews’ emotional engagement with these texts, it points out literary techniques that create engagement with the writerly narrators. This study examines how the writing characters convey both intellectual and emotional intimacy through their writerly dispositions and their literary techniques such as similes, proverbs, metaphors, images, and literary allusions. H. Porter Abbott’s techniques of writing mimesis , Robyn Warhol’s work on intimacy with the second person address, Joe Bray’s epistolary techniques of representation of consciousness, and cognitive scientist Keith Oatley’s concept of literature as simulation contribute to technique analysis. -

There is a pending announcement from the South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa. The announcements come just as we have finished dessert and are having drinks. Both countries are shutting down. | 1 Kenya will stop all flights in the next week, as will South Africa. In Kenya, schools are immediately closed. Parents with children in boarding schools should have them out by end of day the next day. My son’s school sends a message that online school will start two days later. My son is happy to have a day off. This shall be our last social outing in a long time. On Thursday evening after dinner, a post on Facebook leads me to a John Legend concert on Instagram titled At Home. -
