ARCTIC VOL. 44, NO. 1 (MARCH 1991) R 63-73 Raised Marine Features, Radiocarbon Dates, and Sea Level Changes, Eastern Melville Peninsula, Arctic Canada’ L.A. DREDGE2 (Received 5 April 1990; accepted in revised form 9 October 1990) ABSTRACT. Radiocarbon dates from eastern Melville Peninsula indicatethat deglaciation of western Foxe Basin occurredabout 6900 years ago, although lateice persisted in an area northwest of Hall Lake and on the central plateau. Relative sea level was as high as 144 m above present at that time. ’ho new well-controlled sea level curves depict emergence as an exponential decay function. Marine limit elevations and nested curves indicate a major ice-loading centre in south-central Foxe Basin. Thesedata and archaeological dates suggest a secondary recent rebound centre in the northern part of the basin. Flights of raised beaches, prevalentin the area, are composed of angular limestone fragments and suggest that frost-riving occurs in shallow foreshore environments. The prominentwash line near the marine limit suggests that Foxe Basin had less sea ice cover prior to 6OOO years ago but that coastal processes have been similar to present since that time. A redescription of the shell, anterior alimentary system, and radular morphology of Beluturricula gaini is provided. The genus Belaturricula is transferred to the family Conidae (sensu Taylor et al. 1993)on the basis of its radula, which is composed of hollow marginal teeth. The presence of a large shell, prominent operculum, acinous salivary glands, radular teeth with narrow bases in B. gaini, as well as the absence of buccal lips and rhyncodeal introvert, all indicate af5nities with the conid subfamily Clathurellinae. Because the radula ofPontiothaumuergata Hedley (19 16) is nearly indistinguishable from that of Belaturricula guini, we reassign Hedley’s species to the genus Belaturricula as Beluturricula ergata (Hedley, 1916). ABSTRACT The benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages of the Argentine continental shelf were studied from samples of molluscs, echinoderms and bryozoans collected by the RJV Shinkai Maru. Two major faunal groups were distinguished: oné inhabi ting the warmer inner shelf off Buenos Aires and northern Patagonia, and the other occupying the colder middle and outer shelf off Buenos Aires and most of the Patagonian shelf. These results confirm the traditional biogeographie division of the Argentine continental shelf into two provinces: Argentine and Magellanic. Furthermore, the results suggest the possibility of subdividing the Atlantic sector of the Magellanic province into two districts: Patagonian and Malvinean, under the influence of the Patagonian and the Malvinas current, respectively. Gastropods are among the most studied group in Antarctica, and taxa with an advanced status of systematic knowledge can be used as a model to study how oceanographic and cli- matic patterns shaped Recent faunal assemblages. Within the ongoing study of the muricid phylogeny, we have analysed molecular and morphological data from species traditionally ascribed to the muricid subfamily Trophoninae. Particularly, the availability of specimens collected in the Southern Ocean and surrounding basins allowed to demonstrate as the genera Pagodula, Xymenopsis, Xymene and Trophonella, which are traditionally classified in the Trophoninae, actually belong to a distinct lineage, for which the new subfamily Pago- dulinae is herein introduced. We propose and discuss a possible framework for the origin and radiation of Antarctic muricids.
