A redescription of the shell, anterior alimentary system, and radular morphology of Beluturricula gaini is provided. The genus Belaturricula is transferred to the family Conidae (sensu Taylor et al. 1993)on the basis of its radula, which is composed of hollow marginal teeth. The presence of a large shell, prominent operculum, acinous salivary glands, radular teeth with narrow bases in B. gaini, as well as the absence of buccal lips and rhyncodeal introvert, all indicate af5nities with the conid subfamily Clathurellinae. Because the radula ofPontiothaumuergata Hedley (19 16) is nearly indistinguishable from that of Belaturricula guini, we reassign Hedley’s species to the genus Belaturricula as Beluturricula ergata (Hedley, 1916). Gastropods are among the most studied group in Antarctica, and taxa with an advanced status of systematic knowledge can be used as a model to study how oceanographic and cli- matic patterns shaped Recent faunal assemblages. Within the ongoing study of the muricid phylogeny, we have analysed molecular and morphological data from species traditionally ascribed to the muricid subfamily Trophoninae. Particularly, the availability of specimens collected in the Southern Ocean and surrounding basins allowed to demonstrate as the genera Pagodula, Xymenopsis, Xymene and Trophonella, which are traditionally classified in the Trophoninae, actually belong to a distinct lineage, for which the new subfamily Pago- dulinae is herein introduced. We propose and discuss a possible framework for the origin and radiation of Antarctic muricids. Unlike modern Antarctic settings, and 18 the upper units of the Eocene La Meseta Formation on Seymour Island, Antarctica, which are 19 10 million years older, the Cape Melville Formation community is not dominated by sessile 20 suspension feeding ophiuroids, crinoids or brachiopods. Instead, it is dominated by infaunal 21 bivalves, with a significant component of decapods, similar to present day South American 1 22 settings. Recebido: 30/06/2005 Aceito: 02/09/2005 RESUMO Obsevações na reprodução de Pisania pusio (Linnaeus, 1758) (Mollusca: Gastropoda : Bucinidae) em laboratório. O desenvolvimento larval e a desova de Pisania pusio foram descritas. As cápsulas de ovos eram de formato circular e translúcidas e mediram 2.9 to 3.7 mm (n = 52) em diâmetro, estas eram fixadas ao substrato por um pedúnculo. O poro de saída das larvas fica localizado no lado superior da cápsula e media 2.2 mm (n = 52) em diâmetro. No sétimo dia, foi observado o estágio de larva veliger intracapsular. O estágio intracapsular de pediveliger foi observado no décimo quarto dia, quando os animais já possuíam uma coloração escura na parte superior do pé e um “velum” reduzido. A eclosão ocorreu no quadragésimo dia em estágio final de pediveliger. Palavras-chave: Gastropoda, Bucinidae, reprodução. ABSTRACT Spawn and larval development stages of Pisania pusio from Northeast Brazil are described. The egg capsules were translucent with a circular shape which measured 2.9 to 3.7 mm (n = 52) in diameter and it had a stalk to fix the capsule to the substrate. The exit plug is located on the upper side of the capsule and measured 2.2 mm (n = 52) in diameter. -

During the summer season of 2013, samples were sub-Antarctic; diversity 2 obtained by scuba diving using a 0.25 m quadrat, arranged randomly within the bed. We ABBREVIATIONS extracted a total of 15 quadrats per sampling site. For Antarctic Peninsula beds the most MBP: Magellanic abundant species were the bivalve Lissarca miliaris (233 individuals) and the gastropod biogeographical province; Laevilacunaria antarctica (94 individuals), while for Strait of Magellan beds the most abundant NMDS: non-metric species was the polyplacophoran Callochiton puniceus (36 individuals). Comparative analysis multidimensional scaling between the two molluscan assemblages showed significant differences in the faunal com- ordination position between the Antarctic Peninsula and Strait of Magellan (f = 64.474; p = 0.0001). -
