Antonine Maillets La Sagouine : Interdisziplinäre Begegnungen in der Akadie Georg A. Kaiser & Florian Freitag 1 (Konstanz/Mainz) 1. Einleitung In diesem Beitrag möchten wir zeigen, dass bestimmte Texte der America Romana an Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaftler besondere Herausforde- rungen stellen und eine Herangehensweise erfordern, die die institutiona- lisierte disziplinäre Trennung zwischen Sprachwissenschaften einerseits und Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaften andererseits überwindet. Die Idee für diesen Beitrag entstand durch eine solche Überwindung dieser Trennung in der Lehre, im Rahmen zweier z.T. gemeinsam, z.T. parallel unterrichteter Seminare „Das Französische in Nordamerika“ und „Intro- duction à l’Amérique française“ im Wintersemester 2010/2011 an der Universität Konstanz. In diesen Seminaren erwiesen sich v.a. diejenigen Texte als eine be- sondere Herausforderung (für die Studierenden wie auch für die Lehren- den), die sich durch eine dezidierte Oralität auszeichnen, die also in ver- schiedenen, vom Frankreichfranzösischen teilweise stark abweichenden, dialektalen und soziolektalen Varietäten des nordamerikanischen Franzö- sisch verfasst sind. Dazu zählen z.B. sogenannte romans de la terre aus Québec wie etwa Ringuets Trente arpents (1938), in denen zwar die Erzäh- lerstimme Frankreichfranzösisch, die einzelnen Charaktere in direkter Rede jedoch Québec-Französisch verwenden. Insbesondere zählen hier- zu aber Werke des mundartlichen Theaters Frankokanadas wie etwa Mi- chel Tremblays im Montréaler Arbeiterdialekt joual verfasster Skandaler- folg Les belles-sœurs (1968) sowie das nur drei Jahre später veröffentlichte und im akadischen Französisch verfasste La Sagouine der aus New Brunswick stammenden Autorin Antonine Maillet, auf das wir uns im Folgenden konzentrieren möchten. 1 Die Autoren bedanken sich bei Stefano Quaglia, Sandra Tinner und Michael Zimmermann für hilfreiche Kommentare. Nevertheless, the French did not take effective control of their foothold on this continent until 7^ years later when Samuel de Champlain founded the settlement of Quebec in 1608, at the foot of Cape Diamond on the St. Laurence River. At first, the settlement was conceived of as a trading post for the lucrative fur trade, but two difficul ties soon becam,e apparent—problems that have plagued French Canada to the present day—the difficulty of comirunication across trackless forests and m.ountainous terrain and the rigors of the Great Canadian Winter. -

Intersections of Memory, Ancestral Language, and Imagination; or, the Textual Production of Michif Voices as Cultural Weaponry Pamela V. Sing n his overview of the historic origins in modern thought of ideas playing a central role in the current debate over matters of iden- tity and recognition, Charles Taylor emphasizes that, whether it is a Iquestion of individual or of collective identity, “we become full human agents, capable of understanding ourselves, and hence of defining our identity, through our acquisition of rich human languages of expression” (32). Languages, in this context, signify modes of expression used to iden- tify ourselves, including those of art and literature, and all evolve, are de- veloped, and are acquired in a dialogical manner — that is to say, through exchanges with others. By underscoring the socially derived character of identity, this perspective explains the importance of external recognition, both on an individual basis and on a cultural one. In this article, I intend to focus on an aesthetic that, grounded in memory, demonstrates and requests recognition for a particular type of “love of words.” The words in question belong to Michif, an oral ancestral language that, despite (or perhaps because of) its endangered status, proves to be a powerful identity symbol. Relegated to an underground existence during the latter part of the nineteenth century, the resurgence of Michif words and expressions in literary texts reminds the community to which they belong, and that they are telling (back) into existence, of its historic, cultural, and linguistic sources, thus re-laying claim to a specific and distinct, but unrecognized space on the Canadian word/landscape. -

Québec French in Florida: North American Francophone Language Practices on the Road HÉLÈNE BLONDEAU Introduction Most of the sociolinguistic research on French in North America has focused on stable speech communities and long-established francophone groups in Canada or in the US, including Franco-Americans, Cajuns, Québécois and Acadians.1 However, since mobility has become an integral part of an increasingly globalized society, research on the language practices of transient groups of speakers is crucial for a better understanding of twenty-first-century francophone North America. The current article sheds light on the language practices of a group of speakers who experience a high degree of mobility and regular back-and-forth contact between francophone Canada and the US: francophone peoples of Québécois origin who move in and out of South Florida. For years, Florida has been a destination for many Canadians, some of whom have French as their mother tongue. A significant number of these people are part of the so-called “snowbird” population, a group that regularly travels south in an attempt to escape the rigorous northern winter. Snowbirds stay in the Sunshine State only temporarily. Others have established themselves in the US permanently, forming the first generation of Canado-Floridians, and another segment of the population is comprised of second-generation immigrants. By studying the language practices of such speakers, we can document the status of a mobile francophone group that has been largely under-examined in the body of research on French in North America. In this case, the mobility involves the crossing of national borders, and members of this community come in contact with English through their interactions with the American population in Florida. -

French in Québec: A Standard to be Described and Uses to Be Prioritized PIERRE MARTEL and HÉLÈNE CAJOLET-LAGANIÈRE The Evolution of the Standard for Written and Spoken French in Québec For more than two centuries, Québécois have lived in a twofold linguistic insecurity. On the one hand, French was rendered a second-class language by English, which was widely dominant in a number of social spheres and, on the other, its status was undermined compared to the French of France, the one and only benchmark. The “ Joual dispute” of the 1960s and 1970s crystallized opinions around a simplistic alternative: either the language of Québécois was the French of France (most usually termed International French 1, chiefly in order to indicate no dependence on the mother country), in which case every effort would have to be made to conform to it on every point, or else theirs was the popular language of those who were little educated, that is, vernacular speech, stigmatized by the term “ Joual ,” which some associated with the very identity of the Québécois. This black and white representation of the state of our language was ideological and unrealistic. It was as if French was made up of only a “standard” level, the correct written usage, and as if Québec French had only one language level, the vernacular, and even the lax and vulgar language. The Charter of the French Language, promulgated in 1977, contained no provision aimed at defining “French in Québec,” the “standard” or the “quality of the language.” However, the 1 The French Language in Québec: 400 Years of History and Life Part Four II – French a Shared Language Chapter 13 – Which Language for the Future? Orientations to French Language Varieties Among Western Canadian French-As-A-Second- Language Teachers
Meike Wernicke The University of British Columbia ORIENTATIONS TO FRENCH LANGUAGE VARIETIES AMONG WESTERN CANADIAN FRENCH-AS-A-SECOND- LANGUAGE TEACHERS Abstract: In Canada, official French-English bilingualism and the long-standing presence of Indigenous and immigrant languages has shaped how these languages and their varieties are learned, taught, and used in educational contexts. To date, there has been little inquiry into French-as-a-second-language (FSL) teachers’ orientations to the varieties of French they teach, in particular Canadian French language varieties (Arnott, Masson, and Lapkin 2019), despite studies showing that ideologies associated with different language varieties can impact teachers’ instructional choices. This article presents an analysis of the narrated experiences of FSL teachers from Western Canada, drawn from journal and interview accounts, about their encounters with different language varieties while on professional development in France. Thematic and discourse analytic perspectives bring to light complex negotiations of ideological meaning and representation related to language variation in French, as well as the discursive strategies employed by the participants in orientating to these meanings. These discursive actions make evident deeply embedded language ideologies that have significant implications for both French as a first and as a second language education, not only in terms of a prevailing linguistic insecurity among francophones but equally significant for FSL teachers’ professional identity construction, especially those who are themselves second language speakers of French. The analysis and discussion highlight the importance of integrating pluralistic perspectives into teacher education programs and ongoing teacher professional development initiatives. Introduction Les mouvements étudiants acadiens des années 1960 : une force de gauche ou d’affirmation nationale ? es années 1960 représentent, globalement, une décen- nie heureuse dans l’histoire des Acadiens du Nouveau- L Brunswick, une décennie d’optimisme pendant laquelle la population francophone de cette province du littoral atlantique cana- dien a eu l’impression de finalement mériter une place au soleil après deux siècles de survivance, voire de survie. L’élection du premier Acadien comme premier ministre de la province, la création d’une université moderne de langue française, la réforme progressiste et égalitaire de la fiscalité et des services publics provinciaux, l’affirmation d’une volonté politique d’accélérer le développement économique des régions rurales – dont plusieurs étaient majoritairement acadiennes – et le parachève- ment du réseau scolaire de langue française 1 étaient autant d’indices que des lendemains meilleurs attendaient « l’Acadie ». Et pourtant, malgré ces évolutions ostensiblement positives, et en dépit des attentes qu’elles ont engendrées – ou à cause d’elles –, le Nouveau- Brunswick francophone a connu son « moment 1968 », moment de contestation dont l’ampleur se compare, toutes proportions gardées, aux crises soixante-huitardes qui ont alors secoué le Québec et le Canada « anglais ». Mais quels liens peut-on établir entre les actions de quelques centaines d’étudiants qui militent à Moncton en faveur des droits lin- guistiques et culturels pour les francophones, d’une part, et les luttes de la nouvelle gauche nord-américaine et des soixante-huitards français, de 1. Nowadays, many artists perform on the local and international stages from musical, social or linguistic margins. Their success is due to the democratization of production and music broadcasting tools. As this phenomenon becomes more and more common and popular, “marginal” artists and their communities blur the lines between the mainstream and the underground, by the means of performing in their vernacular and promoting these authentic language practices.
