PREFACE This study focuses upon Katherine Anne Porter’s relationships with her literary agent, Cyrilly Abels, and with her editors, Donald Brace and Seymour Lawrence, who were associated with Harcourt, Brace and Atlantic-Little, Brown respectively. The volume of correspondence between Porter, her agent, and various employees at Harcourt, Brace, the Atlantic Monthly, Little, Brown, Alfred A. Knopf and Dell/Delacorte Press (Seymour Lawrence was affiliated with Knopf and Dell/Delacorte after his departure from Atlantic-Little, Brown) is remarkable and includes over six thousand pieces of correspondence including letters, notes, wires, and cards.1 This approximation does not include Porter’s abundant correspondence over the years with other various publishing houses, magazines, and literary agencies. In his introductory comments to Max and Marjorie: The Correspondence Between Maxwell E. Perkins and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Rodger L. Tarr helps put into perspective the extraordinary volume of Porter’s publishing correspondence. Tarr writes that the total number of correspondence between Perkins and Rawlings written between 1930 and 1947 amounts to “698 located letters, notes, and wires.”2 Perkins and Rawlings, according to Tarr’s calculations, must have 1 This number is based upon a microfilm count o f Porter’s correspondence with Cyrilly Abels and with employees at Harcourt, Brace. This number does not include the additional correspondence between Porter and Seymour Lawrence in the Seymour Lawrence Collection. This collection is not on microfilm and so was not counted, but it contains a number of pieces o f correspondence that are not included in the Papers of Katherine Anne Porter. The Cyrilly Abels Collection closely replicates the Cyrilly Abels correspondence in the Porter Papers. I thank Beth Alvarez and her graduate assistant, Jessica Ford Cameron, for counting the microfilm and giving me a good estimation o f the volume o f Porter’s professional correspondence. ' Rodger L. He claims that the size of the collection is “astonishing, even when compared to other Scribner writers of the period, such as Emest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald.” Tarr’s comments make the impressive Rawlings-Perkins correspondence seem tame when compared with the mass of Porter’s business communications. It is difficult to imagine the number of hours Porter must have spent at her typewriter composing letters to agents, editors, and publishers beginning in the 1920s and continuing on until the 1970s, when the writer was in her eighties. Porter’s professional correspondence constitutes a valuable segment of the Papers of Katherine Anne Porter housed in the Hombake Library at the University of Maryland. I have also drawn upon the Seymour Lawrence Collection and the Cyrilly Abels Collection, both housed in the Hombake Library. The wealth of information about Porter’s publishing history contained in this rich archive is at the center of this biographical study. While literary biographers usually provide valuable information about an author’s professional associations with agents and publishers, the limits of time and space preclude them from focusing extensively on this subject. The bonds of friendship and loyalty that developed between Porter and those persons most intimately connected to her creative life were so vital to her creative journey and so time-consuming that an individual study of these author-editor/agent bonds is warranted. Porter’s first long-term affiliation with a major publishing house was with Harcourt, Brace. Porter signed contracts with the house in 1930, and she remained with the house until the death of her editor and publisher, Donald Brace, in 1955. Further reproduction prohibited without permission. heavily upon other employees at the firm assigned to attend to her affairs. Unfortunately, many of Porter’s letters to Harcourt, Brace employees are missing. I believe these letters are in the Harcourt, Brace archives in Orlando, Florida. On two separate occasions, I have tried to obtain these letters, but the attorneys I have communicated with at Harcourt, Inc., in Orlando claim that they find the prospect of reviewing Porter’s archive too daunting. After the death of Donald Brace, Porter sought out new publishers and signed with Seymour Lawrence and Atlantic-Little, Brown in 1955. She remained with Atlantic-Little, Brown until 1964, during which time she finished her best-selling novel, Ship of Fools (1962). When Seymour Lawrence left Atlantic-Little, Brown in 1964, Porter followed him, and the denouement of their mutually dependent alliance is vividly revealed in the Papers of Katherine Anne Porter and in the Seymour Lawrence Collection at the University of Maryland. The abundant correspondence between Cyrilly Abels and Porter is a testament to their mutual devotion to one another as much more than professional associates. Abels was the managing editor of Mademoiselle in the 1950s. She would solicit fiction and nonfiction pieces from Porter, who was willing to put aside work on her novel to write for the magazine because she always needed money to supplement the advances she received from publishers. When Abels became a literary agent in 1962, Porter retained her and they enjoyed a fruitful alliance until Abels died in 1975. Porter chose to work closely only w'ith people whom she trusted implicitly to handle her affairs; her faith in Abels never w'avered. Their alliance illustrates how important it was for Porter to develop bonds of friendship and loyalty with those persons connected with her writing. vi

Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner are among the United States’ most celebrated writers. Nobel laureates and icons of the modernist era, these two writers may be most known for their easily recognizable and radically different styles that surface in everything they write. In many ways, however, they are kindred spirits in terms of theme and ambition. Consider their Nobel Prize acceptance speeches. (Please note that Hemingway, because of illness, was not able to give his speech himself. It was delivered by the U.S. Ambassador to Sweden.) Having no facility for speech-making and no command of oratory nor any domination of rhetoric, I wish to thank the administrators of the generosity of Alfred Nobel for this Prize. No writer who knows the great writers who did not receive the Prize can accept it other than with humility. There is no need to list these writers. Everyone here may make his own list according to his knowledge and his conscience. It would be impossible for me to ask the Ambassador of my country to read a speech in which a writer said all of the things which are in his heart. Things may not be immediately discernible in what a man writes, and in this sometimes he is fortunate; but eventually they are quite clear and by these and the degree of alchemy that he possesses he will endure or be forgotten. Writing, at its best, is a lonely life.

Key Exam Details While there is some degree of latitude for how your specific exam will be arranged, every AP English Literature and Composition exam will include three sections: • Short Fiction (45–50% of the total) • Poetry (35–45% of the total) • Long Fiction or Drama (15–20% of the total) The AP examination will take 3 hours: 1 hour for the multiple-choice section and 2 hours for the free response section, divided into three 40-minute sections. There are 55 multiple choice questions, which will count for 45% of your grade. The Free Response writing component, which will count for 55% of your grade, will require you to write essays on poetry, prose fiction, and literary argument. The Free Response (or “Essay” component) will take 2 hours, divided into the three sections of 40 minutes per section. The course skills tested on your exam will require an assessment and explanation of the following: • The function of character: 15–20 % of the questions • The psychological condition of the narrator or speaker: 20–25% • The design of the plot or narrative structure: 15–20% • The employment of a distinctive language, as it affects imagery, symbols, and other linguistic signatures: 10–15% • And encompassing all of these skills, an ability to draw a comparison between works, authors and genres: 10–15 % The free response portion of the exam will test all these skills, while asking for a thesis statement supported by an argument that is substantiated by evidence and a logical arrangement of the salient points.

    Alice Walker's The Color Purple RUTH EL SAFFAR, University of Illinois Alice Walker's The Color Purple (1982) is the work that has made a writer who has published consistently good writing over the past decade and a half into some­ thing resembling a national treasure. Earlier works, like her collection of short stories, In Love and Trouble (1973), and her poems, collected under the title Revo­ lutionary Petunias and Other Poems (1973), have won awards.' And there are other novels, short stories, poems, and essays that have attracted critical attention.2 But with The Color Purple, which won both the American Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, Alice Walker has made it onto everyone's reading list, bringing into our consciousness with clarity and power the long-submerged voice of a black woman raised southern and poor. Although Celie, the novel's principal narrator/character, speaks initially from a deeply regional and isolated perspective, both she and the novel ultimately achieve a vision which escapes the limitations of time and space. The Color Purple is a novel that explores the process by which one discovers one's essential value, and learns to claim one's own birthright. It is about the magical recovery of truth that a world caught in lies has all but obscured. Shug Avery, the high-living, self-affirming spirit through whom the transfor­ mation of the principal narrator/character takes place reveals the secret at a crucial point: "God is inside you and inside everybody else. You come into the world with God. But only them that search for it inside find it.

The second of six children, Ernest enjoyed an adventurous boyhood, fishing and hunting with his father in the northern woods of Michigan. He attended Oak Park High School where he excelled in his classes, particularly English. He tried his hand at football and swimming, edited the school paper (the Trapeze), and contributed pieces to the school's literary magazine (the Tabula). After graduating high school, Ernest traveled to Kansas City and worked as a cub reporter for The Kansas City Star. In 1918, he began service as an ambulance driver for the Italian army. On July 8, he was wounded at Fossalta on the Italian Piave while delivering chocolates, cigarettes, and postcards to soldiers. He married Elizabeth Hadley Richardson on September 3, 1921. The newlyweds soon entered the literary community of Paris, living off of Hadley's trust fund and Ernest's pay as a foreign correspondent for the Toronto Star. The 1920's were extremely productive writing years for Hemingway. Three Stories and Ten Poems was published in 1923, In Our Time in 1925. In 1926, The Torrents of Spring and the widely successful novel, The Sun Also Rises were published.

Marianne Moore was an early mentor and Robert Lowell raved about her first book of poems and became a close friend, yet her poems are not confessional. Some people say she reminds them of Wallace Stevens, others of Robert Frost. How would you characterize Elizabeth Bishop’s achievement and why is she so difficult to place? Maybe what makes her hard to place is exactly what makes her different from anyone else. The more we learn about her the more we realize that her biography has a lot more to do with both the kind of poet she was and with the subject of her poems than first meets the eye. Here was someone who grew up essentially an orphan. Her father died when she was only a few months old. Her mother had a series of nervous breakdowns , was not able to take care of her , and was institutionalized when Bishop was four. Elizabeth never saw her again even though her mother lived for 18 more years. She was brought up by her grandparents and her aunts and farmed out to private schools.

MADIHUR REHMAN DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH (INDIA) 2013 Abstract The first chapter of the thesis, "The Path to Doom: America from Idea to Reality;'" takes the journey of America from its conception as an idea to its reality. The country that came into existence as a colony of Great Britain and became a refuge of the exploited and the persecuted on one hand and of the outlaws on other hand, soon transformed into a giant machine of exploitation, persecution and lawlessness, it is surprising to see how the noble ideas of equality, liberty and democracy and pursuit of happiness degenerated into callous profiteering. Individuals insensitive to the needs and happiness of others and arrogance based on a sense of racial superiority even before they take root in the virgin soil of the Newfoundland. The effects cf this degenerate ideology are felt not only by the Non-White races within America and the less privileged countries of the third world, but even by the Whites within America. The concepts of equality, freedom, democracy and pursuit of happiness were manufactured and have been exploited by the American ruling class.The first one to experience the crawling effects of the Great American Dream were original inhabitants of America, the Red Indians and later Blacks who were uprooted from their home and hearth and taken to America as slaves.

This thesis examines and analyses three literary classics; ‘Giovanni’s Room’ by James Baldwin, Alice Walker’s ‘The Color Purple,’ and ‘Brokeback Mountain’ by Annie Proulx, from a bisexual perspective. I have sought out to reveal, emphasize, and analyze bisexual elements present in the respective texts from a bisexual literary standpoint. This aspect of the texts has been ignored by most critics, and I believe it is paramount to begin to acknowledge the importance and significance of reading bisexually.
