INTRODUCTION The plaintiff, Janice Scott-Blanton, proceeding pro se, alleges that her novel, My Husband Is On The Down Low and I Know About It (“Down Low”), is the creative source for the award-winning film Brokeback Mountain. She requests that the court permit discovery pursuant to Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 56(f), because it would be premature for the court to decide the defendants’ outstanding motion for summary judgment without a period of discovery. While the plaintiff identifies specific facts she seeks to recover in discovery that would defeat the defendants’ summary judgment motion, she fails to show a reasonable basis to suggest that discovery would create a triable issue of fact. Factual History Annie Proulx (“Proulx”) wrote the short story Brokeback Mountain in 1997, which The New Yorker published and registered for copyright protection in October of that year. Am. Key Exam Details While there is some degree of latitude for how your specific exam will be arranged, every AP English Literature and Composition exam will include three sections: • Short Fiction (45–50% of the total) • Poetry (35–45% of the total) • Long Fiction or Drama (15–20% of the total) The AP examination will take 3 hours: 1 hour for the multiple-choice section and 2 hours for the free response section, divided into three 40-minute sections. There are 55 multiple choice questions, which will count for 45% of your grade. The Free Response writing component, which will count for 55% of your grade, will require you to write essays on poetry, prose fiction, and literary argument. The Free Response (or “Essay” component) will take 2 hours, divided into the three sections of 40 minutes per section. The course skills tested on your exam will require an assessment and explanation of the following: • The function of character: 15–20 % of the questions • The psychological condition of the narrator or speaker: 20–25% • The design of the plot or narrative structure: 15–20% • The employment of a distinctive language, as it affects imagery, symbols, and other linguistic signatures: 10–15% • And encompassing all of these skills, an ability to draw a comparison between works, authors and genres: 10–15 % The free response portion of the exam will test all these skills, while asking for a thesis statement supported by an argument that is substantiated by evidence and a logical arrangement of the salient points. -
Alice Walker's the Color Purple
Alice Walker's The Color Purple RUTH EL SAFFAR, University of Illinois Alice Walker's The Color Purple (1982) is the work that has made a writer who has published consistently good writing over the past decade and a half into some thing resembling a national treasure. Earlier works, like her collection of short stories, In Love and Trouble (1973), and her poems, collected under the title Revo lutionary Petunias and Other Poems (1973), have won awards.' And there are other novels, short stories, poems, and essays that have attracted critical attention.2 But with The Color Purple, which won both the American Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, Alice Walker has made it onto everyone's reading list, bringing into our consciousness with clarity and power the long-submerged voice of a black woman raised southern and poor. Although Celie, the novel's principal narrator/character, speaks initially from a deeply regional and isolated perspective, both she and the novel ultimately achieve a vision which escapes the limitations of time and space. The Color Purple is a novel that explores the process by which one discovers one's essential value, and learns to claim one's own birthright. It is about the magical recovery of truth that a world caught in lies has all but obscured. Shug Avery, the high-living, self-affirming spirit through whom the transfor mation of the principal narrator/character takes place reveals the secret at a crucial point: "God is inside you and inside everybody else. You come into the world with God. But only them that search for it inside find it. -

TWO CASES OF CHINESE INTERNET STUDIES A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts by Yuan Liang August 2019 © 2019 Yuan Liang ABSTRACT This thesis consists of two parts. Chapter 1 concentrates on one genre of Chinese online literature and its relationship with gender and sexuality. It aims at exploring the diversity of Chinese danmei fiction and relating it to the gendered self- identifications of young and educated women in contemporary China. It argues that while danmei fiction in China creates a channel of gender and sexual expressions, it also reflects the difficulties and contradictions that women encounter and experience when they try to place themselves into the current social and economic structure. Chapter 2 studies Chris Marker’s documentary Sunday in Peking and its reception in contemporary China. It closely examines the internet reviews on a Chinese website from the perspectives of idealization and exoticization, and contends that both the filmmaker and his Chinese audiences are under the influences of stereotypes that their society, culture or ideology impose on them. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Yuan Liang was born and raised in Chengdu, China. She started her undergraduate studies at Beijing Normal University in 2013 and earned her bachelor’s degree in Chinese Language and Literature in 2017. In the same year, she joined the M.A. program in Asian Studies at Cornell University. She is expected to receive her master’s degree in August 2019. After graduation, she will become a Ph.D. -

But after receiving many letters and Wpositive reactions, Walker realized that the film may not express her vision, but it does carry the right message. Walker said, "We may miss our favorite part... but what is there will be its own gift, and I hope people will be able to accept that in the spirit that it's given" ("The Color Purple: The Book and the Movie"). Since the film's premiere 25 years ago, Walker has been asked over and over again, "Did you like the movie?" May 2020 Dear Student, You are enrolled in Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition for the coming school year. Bowling Green High School has offered this course since 1983. I thought that I would tell you a little bit about the course and what will be expected of you. Please share this letter with your parents or guardians. A.P. Literature and Composition is a year-long class that is taught on a college freshman level. This means that we will read college level texts—often from college anthologies—and we will deal with other materials generally taught in college. You should be advised that some of these texts are sophisticated and contain mature themes and/or advanced levels of difficulty. In this class we will concentrate on refining reading, writing, and critical analysis skills, as well as personal reactions to literature. A.P. Literature is not a survey course or a history of literature course so instead of studying English and world literature chronologically, we will be studying a mix of classic and contemporary pieces of fiction from all eras and from diverse cultures. This gives us an opportunity to develop more than a superficial understanding of literary works and their ideas. Writing is at the heart of this A.P. course, so you will write often in journals, in both personal and researched essays, and in creative responses. You will need to revise your writing. I have found that even good students—like you—need to refine, mature, and improve their writing skills. You will have to work diligently at revising major essays. -

PETER MOLIN Frederick Busch and Annie Proulx Forebears of Contemporary War Fiction n an Atlantic magazine article titled “Where’s the Great Novel about the War on Terror?” Matt Gallagher, the author of the Iraq War memoir Kaboom, explored reasons why, as of the time he wrote in 2011, so little fiction had appeared that Iaddressed America’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. “Almost a decade after the first bombs were dropped in Afghanistan,” Gallagher states, “even the most avid bookworm would be hard-pressed to identify a war novel that could be considered definitive of this new generation’s battles.” Gallagher considers several reasons why so little contemporary war fiction had yet been published. The wars’ lack of closure had drained would-be authors’ clarity of vision and sense of purpose. Publishing whims favored domestic subjects aimed at women readers. It was only natural that memoirs constituted the first wave of literary response to the wars and given time more fiction will come. About all these points, and especially the last one, Gallagher is ambivalent. He notes the recent publication of Siobhan Fallon’s collection of short stories You Know When The Men Are Gone, about military life on Fort Hood, Texas, during a time of war, but hesitates to conclude that more war fiction will follow Fallon’s achievement. Iraq and Afghanistan, he suggests, may turn out to be like other “brushfire wars,” such as the Phillipine-American War at the turn of the 20th-century, that never generate “classic” novelistic depiction. Time would prove Gallagher wrong in regard to his last point, for in the coming years a number of story collections and novels heralded what Washington Post book critic Jeff Turrentine would later call a “Golden Age” of contemporary war fiction. -

I don't mean your typical "rom-coms" with contrived meet-cutes that rely heavily on celebrity star power. I'm talking about a genuine romance between two richly defined characters. If your mind draws a blank, you're not alone. Hollywood, along with much of the filmmaking world, seems to have either forgotten how to portray love affairs in ways that once made us swoon. Whatever the reason, be it due to our changing times or priorities, we might not see any significant ones for some time. If there is any love story of this kind worth revisiting, it is Ang Lee's BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, which just might be the most moving tale of star-crossed lovers for the past decade. Not many people will remember the film this way, as its two lovers were hardly the kind seen before in major movie romances. Indeed, a story of two cowboys discovering a deep love for each other was bound to cause controversy. Who would dare take on such a subject? Were its motives exploitative? Political? A gimmick? Add in Ang Lee, the celebrated Taiwanese-born director known for ushering the new age of Sino-Cinema to Hollywood, and expectations could not possibly grow further. But grow they did. Once the film won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, a prestige not taken lightly in film circles, interest surged. -

MYLA GOLDBERG, interviewed by Sarah Anne Johnson: In each novel, there are many details that are fact, and others that are based on fact, and still others that are invented. When is it important to use actual details, and when does the imaginative work to better effect? There’s not one answer to that question. Every story, every novel will dic- tate its own answers to questions of research. When you’re writing fiction, you don’t ever have to use anything real if you don’t want to, but it’s a lot easier. If you’re trying to create a convincing setting, you want to start with reality. You can’t start from scratch because that’s impossible. Given that that’s the case, you use research to give yourself enough of the real-world fabric to get yourself in there. In the case of Wickett’s Remedy, I used research until I could look and see things without using research anymore. Research at first was a men- tal tool to help me inhabit that time period and those people. If there were details that stuck out or grabbed me and I realized that I couldn’t do any better than that, I used them.
