RC Recorder of OU Psak and Policy IS IT ACCEPTABLE TO EAT OUT AT A VEGETARIAN OR VEGAN-FRIENDLY INDIAN RESTAURANT IF THE HASHGACHAH (CERTIFYING RABBI OR AGENCY) IS UNRELIABLE? In some circles, it has become increasingly common, and even acceptable, to eat out at Indian restaurants that are vegetarian or vegan-friendly even though the hashgachah may be unreliable. The thinking goes something like this: Indian restaurants don’t serve meat or fish, and I can order foods that don’t contain dairy, so there is very little that can go wrong. Indian restaurants are “almost” kosher. So long as there is a rabbi vouching that it is kosher, though he might have lax standards, isn’t it good enough? This reminds me of the time I received a call from an out-of-town vaad ha’kashrus that was contemplating giving certification to a local Indian restaurant. The restaurant was owned and managed by non-Jews, and there were a number of halachic questions the vaad was unable to resolve. The rabbis decided to speak with Rabbi Yisroel Belsky, zt”l, who was an OU senior posek at the time. Small Jewish communities often lack the resources to support a kosher restaurant. To contend with this challenge, a vaad might try to find an existing (uncertified) restaurant in the neighborhood that is willing to make the necessary changes to become kosher.

Torah Online - Rabbi Tuvia Bolton This week’s Torah portion begins with a bizarre tragedy: On the day that the Jews inaugurated the first ‘House of G-d’ ever, the Tabernacle in the desert, Aaron’s two eldest sons, Nadav and Avihu, became so infatuated with the holiness that they rushed in to the Holy of Holies and were killed by flames that entered their nostrils. This is certainly very interesting and even shocking but seemingly it’s not very relevant to us today, which is the purpose of the Torah. The word ‘Torah’ means ‘teaching’ and every idea in it must be relevant to not only our daily lives but to the very essence of our beings. What is this story doing in the Torah? Today there is no Holy of Holies and people don’t get burnt because of rushing in there. What is the lesson here for us? To understand this here are two stories about Rabbi Moshe Feinstein who passed away almost exactly 25 years ago (13th of Adar 5746) The Torah is G-d's law. It teaches us how to sanctify every detail of the world. But it takes an unusual talent to know what the law is in every situation and such a person was Rabbi Moshe Feinstein. He was one of the greatest 'Poskim' (deciders of Torah law) of all time. The story is told about him that in 1933 when he was a rabbi in the U.S.S.R. in the city of Liubon, the Communists, in their ruthless drive to eradicate Judaism, announced one day that the women’s Mikva was ‘unhealthy’ and had it unceremoniously demolished and rebuilt as a public swimming pool and bathhouse.

“Verapo Yerape,” Part II: Uncovering a Latent Hashkafi c Divide Origins of the Debate: an Alternative Approach1 Rabbi Dr. Howard Apfel There is a far greater chidush (novelty) and even more pro- found hashkafi c (worldview) controversy that can be found in a more subtle dimension of the verapo yerape discussion. It is actually within the fi rst approach alone (that human in- terference is inherently immoral) that both sides of the con- temporary hashkafi c divide most sharply reveal themselves. To reiterate, Tosafot and Rashba (Bava Kama 85a) sug- gested the possibility that interfering with internal disease is being “soter gezerat ha’melech” (attempting to abrogate the Divine decree). The double expression “verapo yerape” teaches however, “kemashmelan de’shari,” that nevertheless it is permissible. What exactly is “kemashmelan de’shari” re- ferring to? R’ Moshe Feinstein – Igrot Moshe Orah Hayyim 4:115, 1976 (excerpts) The first thing you need to know is that homosexuality has the severe punishment of stoning and karet and it is also called disgusting by the Torah itself. It is one of the most debased sins and it even is prohibited for non‑ Jews. This knowledge is a strong bulwark against the yetzer harah. Secondly it is inexplicable that there should be a lust for it. That is because in the creation of man himself there is no natural lust for homosexuality… The desire for homosexual relations is against natural lust and even the wicked do not have a desire for it itself. Rather their entire desire for it is only because it is something prohibited and the yetzer harah seduces them to rebel against the will of God. This knowledge of what is the will of God is a powerful protection against the yetzer harah. You have already defeated the yetzer harah in that you believe in God and all the 13 principles of faith and the entire Torah. With this you can defeat the yetzer harah in this that it seduces you to rebel against God and to anger Him. There is an explicit verse in HaAzinu “That with abominations they provoke Him to anger” [Devarim 32:16] Rashi says an example is homosexuality which is a sin which causes God’s anger. He also says this regarding magic which interferes with the Heavenly family as is stated in Sanhedrin (67b).

HaRav Yehuda Heschel HaLevi Levenberg HaRav Yehuda Heschel HaLevi Levenberg, 29 Kislev, 5645 (Dec. 17, 1884) – 13 Shevat, 5698 (Jan. 15, 1938), was a well-known pioneer who worked to re-create the European Jewish community on the shores of America. In addition to his academic and communal contributions, Rabbi Levenberg also strengthened Shechita practices in America. In his youth, Rabbi Levenberg studied under Rabbi Zalman Sender Kahana-Shapira and Rabbi Shimon Shkop in the Maltch yeshiva and later spent much time in the Slabodka yeshiva. At the young age of 19, he was known as “the shining light of Slabodka” and was chosen to give the hesped for the Kovno Rav. At the age of 20, he received Semicha from Rav Moshe Mordechai Epstein. He traveled to America in the summer of 1910 to raise funds for Slabodka, but ended up staying and soon thereafter was appointed as Chief Rabbi of Jersey City, New Jersey. In 1917, the Va’ad Ho’Ir of New Haven invited Rav Levenberg to become the Chief Rabbi of New Haven. In that capacity, Rabbi Levenberg was not associated with any particular shul and was in charge of the entire community. A gifted orator, Rav Levenberg would speak each week on a rotating basis at a different shul in the community. The shul would be packed an hour before the drasha began. In 1923, Rav Levenberg founded his Yeshiva, one of the first Yeshivos in America, located at 83 Park Street in New Haven. Rav Moshe Don Sheinkopf also served as a Rosh Yeshiva before accepting the Rabbanus of Waterbury, CT in 1925.
