Newsletter #10 2019

15 March 2019

Dear Parents,

We are at the end of Term 1 of 2019 and you will now have your child’s report for the Term. This was a non-exam Term and so these assessments will be based on two or three tasks. These could include tests, projects, assignments or worksheets. Some may have been under exam conditions in class while projects are traditionally done at home. As such we usually find pupils’ marks are slightly higher this Term than in an Exam Term.

Having said this, we are generally very happy with the results across all Grades this term and the vast majority of our pupils deserve a well-earned rest.

Bush Clean-Up

The Grade 8s and 9s started today with a ‘Bush Clean-up’. We spent two hours picking up a mountain of litter from the area immediately below the school [across Lower Kloof Road and above Victoria Road]. The vast majority of this rubbish is carried into the bush by people who have been living in this area. So as part of our clean-up, the City of also removed building material from the area. I think our pupils were shocked with how much litter was in the bush just out of sight of the road. About 250 pupils worked for two hours and we were still not able to totally clean the area. We learned some lessons, one of which is that the surgical rubber gloves we issued were not really up to the job and many broke and had to be replaced. We also needed to organize the areas better as some children had very little to collect while others had mounds of rubbish to collect and put in bags.

Working with the children, I was amazed that many seemed to have never ever done any cleaning duties at home. So now that they have had some experience of cleaning up, you can make use of this new skill at home. Just a thought. We will have to do this clean up at least once a year if we want to rehabilitate this area completely. For 2019, the Grade 8s and 9s have done their bit and so we will be looking to the Senior Grades next.

Nepal Trip

We are excited to announce we’re launching a team to go on an expedition to Nepal this year, working with an organisation called Global Vision International (GVI).

GVI was established in 1998 and operates award-winning Service Learning programmes focused around global issues. The tour experience will provide them with a wealth of new skills which they will find invaluable in school, at varsity and in the world of work. These British-initiated adventures have excellent safety, support and management.

Please click the link below for more information about this organisation: https://www.gviafrica.co.za/group-travel/schools/nepal-community-development-experience/

This is also an opportunity for those completing their President’s Awards portfolio.

The proposed dates are either 21 - 29 September 2019 or the March school holidays in 2020. As it stands the approximate cost is R25 000, which includes all flights, accommodation and food for the duration of the trip.

The trip is open to all Grades and we need a minimum of eight pupils to go for the trip to be feasible. If you are interested please mail me at [email protected] and I can send you more information.

Our Rugby and First Team Hockey Teams played matches against touring team, Hoërskool Martin Oosthuizen from Kakamas in the Northern Cape.

Grade 9 PR Team member, Gemma Webb, took these pictures of the U-16 Game.

Nikki Cross & Allie Alexander Farewell

At the end of this term we say a sad and fond farewell to two valued staff members:

Allie Alexande:

Our Foreman retires after 23 years of service. There are few venues in the school that have not benefitted from his cabinet- making skills. I think it is safe to say that every cupboard in the school has been built by him over the 23 years; his three children passed through the school as well.

He leaves us to work full-time at the travel business he has developed from a hobby. We wish him every success.

Nicola Cross:

Mrs Cross leaves us to take up a position closer to home. She has taught here for six years as an English teacher. In this position she has become loved by all her pupils. We are really going to miss her, but we are sure she will make the same impact at her new school as she has made here. Our best wishes go with her.

Well done to both our Senior and Junior Debate Teams who debated against Good Hope Seminary last night and won their debates. Nwabisa Mbisholo, Francois Kemp and Gia Abbott made up the Senior Team, and Kukhanya Finca, Abigail van der Spuy and Laylah Wiltshire represented the Juniors. Well done to Francois Kemp and Kukhanya Finca who were Best Speakers.
