Newsletter #28 2019 16 August 2019

Dear Parents

Last night was opening night for eKhaya, The Musical. It was everything we had hoped for, a home grown story with heart. The writer, Penny Youngleson, has managed to capture almost every issue we face in Cape Town today. No social comment has been left unturned, no part of our unique history as a city has been overlooked. So, from District 6 to problems in schools, to issues around race, gender, religion and sexuality, nothing is too sacred to be mentioned. All these issues are aired in a most refreshing and transparent way, with song and humour. A highlight of the show is the main character, Zoe Baatjies’ speech of hope for Cape Town.

Today in Assembly I thanked all the performers as well as all the pupils and teachers who are playing vital supporting roles in makeup, costume, staging and sound and lighting positions. Mr Cross and his team must be commended on such a professional production. So, if you haven’t seen the show yet, please make a point of coming either tonight or tomorrow. Definitely a must-see!

GROOTE SCHUUR DERBY DAY – SATURDAY 17 AUGUST 2019

VARSITY COLLEGE

We have past pupils spread across the country at various higher education institutions. From time to time we get a list of who is registered at a particular institution. So I was delighted when I received the attached list from Varsity College. It is good to know that our past pupils are doing such a range of courses. Maybe you recognise someone you know when you glance down the attached list.

POPULAR AFRIKAANS SINGER REACHES OUT TO STUDENTS

Miss Du Plessis got in touch with Deon Meiring - a well-known Afrikaans singer and told him that she was teaching his songs to her students. Deon decided to put together a message for our students to help motivate them to really try to learn to speak Afrikaans. Deon was a member of the bands - Glaskas and Dans Dans Lisa, and is now making music and singing under his own name.

You can view Deon's message to Camps Bay High School students on our Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/campsbayhighschool/videos/501628230597161/

At the end of the clip you’ll see Miss. Du Plessis’ Grade 10 students singing one of his songs from Glaskas: Gisteraand.

RAK WEEK

A big thank you to Interact for all the effort they put into making RAK Week wonderful.

As a school they again reminded us just how nice it is to be the recipient of a ‘Random Act of Kindness”. On a personal note a big thank you for all the cake and sweet treats we were given today.

They also launched a new project this week - "The Odd Socks Project" wants your odd socks to be paired up and redistributed! If you would like to donate your odd socks, please leave in the box provided at the clothing shop.

PARENT LIAISON BODY TERM 3 PROJECT: FACILITIES STAFFROOM

The PLB are appealing to all our parents to assist them in creating a space that allows our very hardworking ground staff, a moment to relax during their breaks.

They are looking for comfortable furniture (couches and chairs) as well as some colourful décor (pictures, cushions etc.). If you have anything to donate or would like to find out more about this project, please contact project leader, Janine Thetard ([email protected]).

Learners attend in school uniform We are looking forward to seeing you there! Variety of food & drink items on sale. MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL

The annual GSHS – CBHS sports day is the highlight of the winter season - also the pinnacle of school sport for Gr.12s. Past years’ rivalry gave both schools much to celebrate, and 2019 will be no different. We welcome Mr De Korte, the CBHS staff, learners and their parents to our school.

This year is particularly special in that GSHS is celebrating her Diamond Jubilee. We are delighted that the CBHS community will be a part of our collective memory of this year. Through our growth and transformation spanning our 60 years, GSHS has always been keen competitor in sport. With an enrolment of 932 learners today, we are a very different prospect to the early days when the enrolment was 255. We adopted a school motto aligned to our new status – effingens future (Shaping the future).

We encourage all teams and all players to make this sports day a very enjoyable and successful one. Win or lose, the lasting memories will be of how well we competed and how we were made to feel. To this end, we all have a responsibility. Play hard, play fair, and give your best.
