Dear Customer, Still going strong at the age of 92, conductor Stanislaw Skrowaczewski has long been making his mark as an extremely insightful and convincing interpreter of core classical and romantic repertoire, perhaps especially with his recordings and performances of Bruckner. Many will already know his brilliant cycle of the Symphonies recorded for Oehms (complete label now on offer) and may also remember a wonderful live recording of Symphony no.3 he made with the LPO, released on their own label just over a year ago. June now sees a follow-up to this: a recording of Symphony no.5, recorded in concert in October 2015. We felt it was a very worthy contender for our new ‘Disc of the Month’ slot so is available at a very special price with any order over £50. See below for full details. With the weather being its usual unreliable self, at least we can tell that summer has arrived by the slight slowing- down of top classical recordings being released. Having said that, there are still a few titles to point out deserving special attention: Shostakovich and Nelsons have proved to be a winning combination in the past, so it is great to see DG now issuing his readings of Symphonies 5, 8 & 9; Harnoncourt’s final Beethoven recording was a big seller earlier this year and we now have another chance to hear him, this time in the Missa Solemnis, recorded at Salzburg in 2015; Albion (from the Vaughan Williams Society) offer us a fascinating selection of old Vaughan Williams and Holst recordings, remastered from 78s; Jordi Savall explores the world of Catlonian philospher, Ramon Llull (1232-1315), beautifully presented by Alia Vox; pianist Sarah Beth Briggs gives us the world premiere recording of Hans Gal’s Piano Concerto on Avie (highly recommended); and Opera Rara venture into the works of Leoncavallo with a revival of his 1900 work, Zaza (rev 1919). The Opera Rara label also features as one of our new special offers, alongside others including the ‘Originals’ series from DG/Decca, a selection of best-selling titles from Erato, the complete catalogues of Oehms, Accent, Christophorus and Archipel (great value archive recordings) plus selections from Chandos, Hyperion and Brilliant Classics. Plenty to get your teeth into this summer! Best regards from, The Europadisc Team DISC OF THE MONTH Bruckner - Symphony no.5 £9.25 London Philharmonic Orchestra, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski or pay just LPO LPO 0090 £6.95 This live concert recording features renowned Bruckner expert Stanisław if your order value Skrowaczewski, who commands a rare position within the international musical exceeds £50* scene, being both a renowned conductor and a highly-regarded composer. Offer available while stocks last. Anton Bruckner’s Fifth Symphony is one of the grandest of his so-called ‘cathedrals in sound’. From the first movement’s monumental tone, via the beautiful yet enigmatic Adagio and the dance-haunted Scherzo, Bruckner’s ‘fantastic’ Fifth ends with a triumphant orchestral finale, among the finest ever written. Skrowaczewski’s interpretation of Bruckner’s Symphony No.3 with the LPO is also available on the LPO’s record label (LPO0084). Released in 2015, the recording received excellent reviews, with BBC Radio 3 commenting that ‘it sounds throughout as if the LPO is completely in sympathy with the conductor’s carefully controlled approach ... It feels right, end to end.’ This recording was taken from a live concert performance at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall on Saturday 31 October 2015. 2 PRIORITY NEW RELEASES DG and Decca Shostakovich Brahms Under Stalin’s Shadow Lieder and Symphonies 5, 8 & 9 Liebeslieder Waltzes Boston SO, Kozena, Polenzani, Andris Nelsons Quasthoff, Levine etc £14.95 £11.50 DG 479 5201 (2 CD) DG 479 6044 Cantar Shostakovich Arrangements for Piano Trios 1 & 2, trumpet of Handel, Viola Sonata Cimarosa, Tartini etc Ashkenazy, Visontov, Flores Lidstrom, Meinich £12.50 £11.50 DG 479 1068 DG 478 9382 Also available from DG and Decca Classic FM CFMD 47 Music for a Royal Occasion A 90th Birthday Celebration for Her Majesty Various £12.50 DG 479 5964 Pires Complete Chamber Music Recordings for DG 12CD Pires etc £39.95 DG 479 6268 Symphonic Queen The Greatest Hits due 10/6 RPO;Freeman £11.50 Decca 483 0236 Satie Complete Solo Piano Music 6CD Thibaudet;Roge;Collard;Juillet £19.95 FOUR NEW BOX SETS Martha Argerich Archiv Produktion Complete Chopin 1947-2013: an Recordings on DG overview of their 66 with Maisky, Abbado, year history Rostropovich etc £89.95 £19.95 DG 479 1045 (55 CD) DG 479 6068 (5 CD) Zubin Mehta Emerson String Symphonies and Quartet Symphonic Poems by Complete Recordings Beethoven, Bruckner, on DG Schubert, Mahler etc £84.95 £39.95 DG 479 5982 (52 CD) Decca 482 1836 (23 CD) due 17/6 3 PRIORITY NEW RELEASES Sony Beethoven Beethoven Symphonies 4 & 7 Missa Solemnis Deutsche A Schoenberg Choir, Kammerphilharmonie Concentus Musicus Bremen, P Jarvi Wien, Harnoncourt £10.95 £10.95 88985 328562 88985 313592 Also available from Sony 88875 178262 All You Need is Bach Cameron Carpenter performs on his International Touring Organ £10.95 88985 305402 Satie Piano Works Scheps £10.95 88875 143462 Hora Cero Tangos from Piazzolla, Salgan etc 12 Cellists of the Berliner Philharmoniker £10.95 88985 320352 Argerich The Complete Sony Classical Recordings - Prokofiev, Franck, Schumann etc 5CD £24.95 Chandos see pp.26-29 for special offers on the Chaconne and 2-4-1 series Cello Concertos Les Voyages by Hasse, CPE Bach de l’Amour and Hertel Works by Boismortier, Rudin, Musica Viva Rebel and Corrette Ensemble Meridiana £10.50 £10.50 CHAN 0813 CHAN 0812 Also available from Chandos CHAN 10901 The Lyrical Clarinet Vol.2 - Schumann, Chausson, Field, Ravel, Debussy etc Collins;McHale £11.95 CHAN 10902 Chopin Ballades 1 & 4, Berceuse, Fantasy in Fmin, Barcarolle, selected Nocturnes Cooper £11.95 CHAN 241-55 125 Years of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra Wagner, Strauss, Nielsen, Debussy etc 2CD £11.95 Albion Media CONTENTS 8. • Franz Schubert Written and Narrated by Jeremy Siepmann with Tom George As Schubert
LIFE AND WORKS Franz Schubert Written and narrated by Jeremy Siepmann with Tom George as Schubert 8.558135–38 Life and Works: Franz Schubert Preface If music is ‘about’ anything, it’s about life. No other medium can so quickly or more comprehensively lay bare the very soul of those who make or compose it. Biographies confined to the limitations of text are therefore at a serious disadvantage when it comes to the lives of composers. Only by combining verbal language with the music itself can one hope to achieve a fully rounded portrait. In the present series, the words of composers and their contemporaries are brought to life by distinguished actors in a narrative liberally spiced with musical illustrations. Unlike the standard audio portrait, the music is not used here simply for purposes of illustration within a basically narrative context. Thus we often hear very substantial chunks, and in several cases whole movements, which may be felt by some to ‘interrupt’ the story; but as its title implies the series is not just about the lives of the great composers, it is also an exploration of their works. Dismemberment of these for ‘theatrical’ effect would thus be almost sacrilegious! Likewise, the booklet is more than a complementary appendage and may be read independently, with no loss of interest or connection.
