Biographies Craig Ogden, guitar Described by BBC Music Magazine as ‘A worthy successor to Julian Bream’, the Australian- born guitarist Craig Ogden is one of the most exciting artists of his generation. He studied guitar from the age of seven and percussion from the age of thirteen. In 2004, he became the youngest instrumentalist to receive a Fellowship Award from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. One of the UK’s most recorded guitarists, his recordings for Virgin/EMI, Chandos, Nimbus, Hyperion, Sony and Classic FM have received wide acclaim. Craig Ogden has performed concertos with many of the world’s leading orchestras including the Hallé, BBC Concert Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica de Navarra, RTÉ Concert Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra, Spanish Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of Opera North, Royal Northern Sinfonia and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. In 2015, Craig was asked to step in at short notice for the indisposed Miloš Karadaglić and performed a series of concerts on tour with the Royal Northern Sinfonia at major UK concert halls and again in 2016 with the Royal Northern Sinfonia and the English Chamber Orchestra, both tours receiving critical acclaim. In 2019, Craig presented his own programme of “The Celebration of the Guitar” with Manchester Camerata which showcased the guitar in various styles. Numerous composers have written works for him and in 2017 Craig gave the world premiere of Andy Scott’s guitar concerto with the Northern Chamber Orchestra followed by the Australian premiere in Perth. He gave the world premiere of ‘Il Filo’, a double concerto for guitar and accordion by David Gordon with Miloš Milivojević in Summer 2019 and will be giving the world premiere of a concerto written for him by David Knotts with the BBC Concert Orchestra in March 2022 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, recorded by BBC Radio 3.

June 2016 Catalogue Prices valid until Wednesday 27 July 2016 unless stated otherwise 0115 982 7500 [email protected] 1 Welcome! Dear Customer, Still going strong at the age of 92, conductor Stanislaw Skrowaczewski has long been making his mark as an extremely insightful and convincing interpreter of core classical and romantic repertoire, perhaps especially with his recordings and performances of Bruckner. Many will already know his brilliant cycle of the Symphonies recorded for Oehms (complete label now on offer) and may also remember a wonderful live recording of Symphony no.3 he made with the LPO, released on their own label just over a year ago. June now sees a follow-up to this: a recording of Symphony no.5, recorded in concert in October 2015. We felt it was a very worthy contender for our new ‘Disc of the Month’ slot so is available at a very special price with any order over £50. See below for full details. With the weather being its usual unreliable self, at least we can tell that summer has arrived by the slight slowing- down of top classical recordings being released. Having said that, there are still a few titles to point out deserving special attention: Shostakovich and Nelsons have proved to be a winning combination in the past, so it is great to see DG now issuing his readings of Symphonies 5, 8 & 9; Harnoncourt’s final Beethoven recording was a big seller earlier this year and we now have another chance to hear him, this time in the Missa Solemnis, recorded at Salzburg in 2015; Albion (from the Vaughan Williams Society) offer us a fascinating selection of old Vaughan Williams and Holst recordings, remastered from 78s; Jordi Savall explores the world of Catlonian philospher, Ramon Llull (1232-1315), beautifully presented by Alia Vox; pianist Sarah Beth Briggs gives us the world premiere recording of Hans Gal’s Piano Concerto on Avie (highly recommended); and Opera Rara venture into the works of Leoncavallo with a revival of his 1900 work, Zaza (rev 1919).

HANS GÁL: CHAMBER MUSIC, VOLUME THREE – THE PIANO QUARTET AND FOUR SONATINAS FOR VIOLIN by Eva Fox-Gál Te three works recorded here come from three very diferent phases of Hans Gál’s life, a life punctuated by the major upheavals of the twentieth century in Europe. But each has a personal relationship to the composer and his family. Te Piano Quartet belongs to Gál’s earliest period, when he was living in his native Vienna. Te opening paragraph of Te Golden Age of Vienna, the frst of the ten books he wrote or edited in British exile, gives the background to the musical culture into which he was born: Tere is hardly a place in the world so deeply imbued with the spirit of a musical past as Vienna. As the result of a unique constellation in the astral system of genius, this town was the focal point in the history of music for more than half a century, when Gluck, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert lived there in a continuous succession. In their diferent ways, Brahms, Bruckner, Wolf, Mahler took up the tradition. Lanner and three members of the Strauss family conquered the world with their dance tunes.1 He describes the impact of Vienna’s specifc geographical location and its historical position as ‘the dominating centre of a dozen provinces and nationalities’ on the development of a distinctive musical style. Gál’s own musical education connected him deeply with the musical tradition and values which had become so closely associated with Vienna before the First World War. From the age of ffeen he became a pupil of one of the foremost piano- teachers in the city, Richard Robert (1861–1924), who himself had been a student of Bruckner.
