Ashcan Studio of Art is an extraordinary institution that offers the highest quality art education to a diverse student body. The faculty and I are committed to cultivating within our students the intellectual curiosity needed to explore the creative process, embrace new challenges, and pursue intellectual and aesthetic excellence. The artists of our namesake, The Ashcan School, were known for their portrayals of daily urban life, especially within . In that same spirit, the learning process at Ashcan Studio begins with developing observational drawing, painting and sculptural techniques. We then move beyond that foundation to work with our students in the conceptual development of their projects, encouraging critical thinking and the individual’s creativity. Since 2006, Ashcan Studio of Art has established an excellent reputation at colleges and universities for the preeminence of portfolios submitted to them by our students. These students have been accepted to major visual arts schools in the U.S and the U.K and they have been offered extraordinary amounts of merit-based scholarships. Each year, the outstanding work of our students is acknowledged by many of the world’s greatest educational institutions. Our goals and successes extend beyond our concrete achievements. I started Ashcan Studio of Art because I, as an artist, know firsthand that an excellent art education can be transformative. My faculty and I have developed a nurturing, open, and creative community in which young artists can advance their talents and grow as individuals. Here in the studio, the faculty and I share our passion for art with our students, and we are dedicated to helping them achieve their dreams. The Ashcan Studio Visual Arts Program is for students who wish to improve their skills and excel in the Visual Arts. Under the guidance of Ashcan Studio’s Instructors students develop ideas, and learn techniques that lead to the production of outstanding visual artwork. This program is for the most inexperienced artists up through advanced art students.

INTRODUCTORY STATEMENT

As a member of the Ashcan Studio faculty, each one of us is both an artist and a teacher. These two aspects of our creative work complement each other. As artists, we understand the dedication and time that go into making art. Each of us has developed different art-making techniques and conceptual skills in our studio practices. Likewise, we each take a different approach to teaching that focuses on each student as a creative individual. As teachers help students in finding solutions to creative problems, both groups benefit from the knowledge gained. We’ve all been through art school and have learned the challenges and joys of being an art student and an artist. We collectively believe in the importance of a quality art education and have dedicated ourselves to ensuring that each student is on the right creative path for him or herself. Here at Ashcan, we care deeply about our students as we keep open the lines of communication and ensure that our students’ education satisfies their creative goals and needs. “Ashcan gave me a place to come to everyday “My experience in Ashcan was terrific. Hi Ashcan,

Sorry this has taken me so long... I’ve been in Greece for the past two weeks with my mom as kind of a congrats for TESTIMONIALS | LETTER getting into college.

First off, I’m going to Pratt and I got a total of $19,673 in scholarships. I got into all the schools I applied to. At SVA I got a $3,600 Chairmans Scholarship and I also got invited to lunch with the chairmen to talk about skipping my foundation year because I already had all the technique that the freshmen year teaches. At SCAD I got a total of $11,500.

FROM THE FORMER STUDENTS_ASHCAN STUDIO OF ART FROM THE FORMER STUDENTS_ASHCAN STUDIO OF At MICA I got the Presidential Scholarship which was something like $15,000 a year. Also I just got an illustration freelance opportunity that I’m really excited for....it’s for a book store in Greece that’s printing little short stories and they asked if I would illustrated one of them!

Thank you so much for all the help! I’m really excited to attend Pratt Institute and I couldn’t of done it without all Ashcan’s help and support.Again thank you!

SUMMER INTENSIVE PROGRAM COLLEGE PORTFOLIO PREPARATION

allows students to give their portfolio the necessary time and attention to develop to its highest quality

8 - 12 WEEKS BFA MFA OPEN STUDIO BEGIN CREATIVE JOURNEY AT ASHCAN

Why is our summer intensive course so important? * Schedule will be decided on a case by case basis dependent upon each student’s technical level in art and/or design. Our Summer Intensive Program is designed for all Ashcan students who wish to apply to colleges the following Fall/Winter (for admittance the Fall of the following year). During the school year, high school and college students rightly must focus most of their time on their school work and so have limited time to dedicate to their portfolio. The Summer Intensive allows students to give their portfolio the necessary time and attention to develop to its highest quality. In addition, the summer at Ashcan is a focused, nurturing and ambitious community of art students whose success influences one another. The daily art practice in a summer dedicated to the portfolio has been a huge element in the outstanding achievements ofAshcan’s students, allowing their portfolios to stand out so well to college recruiters. (Monday to Friday 11am-3pm and 4pm-8pm)

Portfolio Reviews from Colleges

Each year, we invite representatives from top art schools like Pratt, SVA, RISD, and Cooper Union, to visit our studios. They provide crucial information and insights about their programs, and they provide one-on-one and group critiques of our students’ works. This valuable opportunity 1 gives students direct access to the opinions of admissions officers and faculty.

Raindrop Memory Installation: This project was formed from an installation created by our director Shin Y Rho. We stepped under the “idea umbrella” to recount a favorite memory that we wished to preserve. We then made a small colored 1,2 sketch of this memory to place in each glass ‘raindrop’ so that we became a part of this installation. Next, we learned about value and In Class_ how to control the pressure of our instrument to create a variety of tones. These studies lead to charcoal drawings drawn from a direct Raindrop Memory Installation observation of the installation. Once we had an understanding of form and value from what was visible, we ventured into our imaginations to merge the physical installation with our special memories using watercolors. The fluidity of paint and dreamlike Keith Haring quality of memories captures the essence of rain. Lastly, full artistic freedom was granted as we delved into color and painted our very Inspired Murals own memory preserving umbrellas. These beautiful pieces ensure that our memories won’t get washed away.

learn how to express themselves and how to trust their own creativity

ART CONTEST PREPARATION ART SCHOOL PREPARATION CREATE UNIQUE WORKS OF ART

Our 7th-8th graders are at a stage of gaining independence but also in need of great structural support. With that in mind, we have amazing lesson plans that teach technical skills and are fun and experimental. This group of students gets introduced to a variety of art making techniques and materials as well as to art history. They learn how to express themselves and how to trust their own creativity. While having fun, they also begin to handle the rigors of an art education. They learn discipline and structure balanced with creativity and experimentation. These students are also rewarded with recognition in awards competitions for their outstand- ing works of art. Many of our 7th and 8th graders are planning to apply to specialized high schools, competitive private schools or other competitive art programs. For these students, we follow the same philosophy as above but focus a bit more on the develop- ment of a strong visual arts portfolio. For these young artists we help them achieve their dream of beginning a top education in the visual arts. Our students have been accepted into Frank Sinatra School of the Arts, Laguardia High School of Music and Art and Stuyvesant High School. They have also been consistently recognized for their talent by the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards and other national arts organizations.

Create Unique Works of Art

We ask our students to go beyond the typical art assignment and to develop unique projects that express their own personalities and tastes. Students learn how to ask themselves questions that evoke personal, creative responses. Through internet and library research, they explore the many styles, techniques, and materials that may be useful to them in the expression of their ideas.

Art Contest Preparation

We keep our eyes peeled for art contests in which our students can participate. Contests provide students with an opportunity to compete locally and nationally with their peers. While many contest-holders offer cash and other prizes, they also grant awards that make students stand out among other college applicants, and provide students with confidence in their abilities. Our students have been consistently recognized for their talent by the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards and other national arts organizations.

17 Art High School Preparation

Many of our 7th and 8th graders are planning to apply to specialized high schools, competitive private schools, or other competitive art programs. Our students have been accepted into Frank Sinatra School of the Arts, LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and Stuyvesant High School.

learn how to ask themselves questions that evoke personal, creative responses

ART CONTEST PREPARATION ASHCAN ANNUAL EXHIBITION DEVELOP UNIQUE PROJECTS

Our 9th and 10th graders work very similarly to our 11th graders and up (please see the 11th-12th Grade & up description). There are however some differences. Since they are a bit younger and less experienced, we focus less on the production of a portfolio and more on technique development, experimentation with materials and concept development as wellas generally gathering knowledge in the visual art and art history. We want our younger high-schoolers to develop an understanding of the visual art but also confidence in their own art-making. To this end, we work supportively teaching them both techniques in the basics of drawing, painting and sculp- ture but also the steps and strategies it takes to develop ambitious and personal works of art. Even with this spirit of experimentation and concept development, our 9th and 10th graders still complete a number of exceptional works of art. Most of these students win awards each year for their outstanding works of art. They also develop confidence in themselves so that in the upcoming years as they make decisions about applying to college, they have the knowledge and self-determination to make these difficult decisions and to follow through the processes successfully.

Try New Materials

In addition to teaching our students the foundational technical skills in typical two- and three-dimensional media, we also recognize the value of introducing students to more advanced materials, like oil painting and plaster casting. Experimentation is also highly encouraged, especially with the variety of materials and art-making approaches available today.

1 1 Celine Park Foundations Techniques

We believe that anyone can learn the basic skills necessary to study Fine Arts. When students begin their studies at Ashcan Studio of Art, they are given a test to determine their level of ability. According to their abilities, they begin a curriculum through which they can develop technical skills in Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture, with individual attention and evaluation from instructors. These techniques include perspective, shading, color mixing, and 3D design.

Improve Creativity

Perhaps the most important advantage that we can offer to our students is a boost in creativity. By challenging our students to complete highly ambitious and personal works of art, and by providing them with the technical and visual thinking skills to do so, we prepare our students for professional careers in the visual arts and beyond.

This preparation includes developing drawing, painting and sculptural techniques, learning art history and , and guiding students through project development. With our small classes, each young adult artist has the freedom and guidance to reach their best creative potential. Through our instructors' demonstrations, critiques and in-depth knowledge of their field, they develop supportive and challenging relationships as mentors for these students. We intensively work with the classes on portfolio development, mentoring, and college applications. This rigorous yet supportive atmosphere gives students the atmosphere needed to get accepted into the college of their choice as well as to thrive there once they are studying at the college level. Ashcan students go on to top art and design schools such as Cooper Union, RISD and Pratt as well as to competitive liberal arts colleges such as Carnegie Mellon, Yale, and Cornell.

Ivy League Supplement If students have talent in the Arts, Ivy League and other high-ranking liberal arts colleges recommend the submission of an Arts Supple- ment with their applications. An Arts Supplement is a portfolio of artwork that showcases a student’s creative and technical abilities. An outstanding supplement increases a student’s chances of getting accepted. College Counseling Our administrative faculty knows the intricacies of the college application process. We communicate frequently with the schools to which our students most often apply, and our information about application guidelines is as up-to-date as possible. As professionals in their fields, our faculty can assist students as they make difficult decisions about where and when to apply to college. Individual Studio Space At both our Manhattan and our Queens locations, we offer each student a personal workspace with a table, chair, easel, storage space under each desk and wall space by each desk. Ashcan Studio has a number of computers for project research and design programs to develop works of art. Many students bring their own computers and use Ashcan Studio’s wireless network. We encourage you to take a look at our studios, or schedule a visit. AP Art Assistance In addition to developing a highly individualized portfolio with our faculty, high school seniors who are taking Advanced Placement Art classes may also receive assistance in coming up with technical and conceptual solutions to their AP Art assignments.

VISUAL ART program SCULPTURE class

covers basic techniques of modeling, casting, and assemblage using various additive and subtractive methods

MODELING MOLDING AND CASTING ASSEMBLAGE

Sculptural techniques are taught in three broad categories; clay modeling, mold making and casting, and assemblage. In addition to their drawing skills, students learn to “sketch” in three dimensions by creating clay and wire maquettes and quick assemblages. Sometimes, students create sculptures as a subject for a drawing or a painting. At other times, students learn to translate their two-dimensional sketches into three-dimensional forms. Advanced students learn how to develop their ideas in both two- and three- dimensional media, and may at times create works that combine the two.

MODELING Student learn how to recreate form and the illusion of mass and texture in wire armature, clay, and papier-mâché, and they learn how to use modeling as a thinking tool through the creation of maquettes.

MOLDING AND CASTING A course that explores traditional and contemporary casting materi- als, such as plaster, hydrogel, latex, and plastic. Students cast forms from life and invent forms that acquire their conceptual life in diverse materials or as multiples.

ASSEMBLAGE In this course, students learn how to combine an array of found, bought, or made objects in order to create cohesive sculptures that exhibit order, chaos, or both. Students are encouraged to consider the conceptual ramifica- tions of using objects that have or had a use or purpose. 1 2
