April 2016 To Research of Noctuoidea Fauna (Lepidoptera) of the Western Kazakhstan Dmitry F. SHOVKOON & Tatiana A. TROFIMOVA Abstract Noctuoidea fauna of the Western Kazakhstan was examined by authors from 2003 to 2012. As a result of this study the annotated list includes 200 species. The species Rhabinopteryx turanica (ERSCHOFF, 1874), Heptapotamia eustratii ALPHÉRAKY, 1882, Eugnorisma tamerlana (HAMPSON, 1903) and Margelana versicolor (STAUDINGER, 1888) are noted here as new for Europe. Guselderia lutea HACKER, KUHNA & GROSS, 1986 (nov. syn.) is established as a junior synonym of Heptapotamia eustratii ALPHÉRAKY, 1882. 573 species of Noctuoidea known at present from the Western Kazakhstan are discussed. Key words: Western Kazakhstan, Noctuoidea fauna. Introduction The Noctuoidea of the European region is well-known as soon as the last volume of a series devoted to the particular part of the regional fauna (Noctuidae Europaeae) was finished in 2011. The fauna of Noctuoidea of the Western Kazakhstan region is partly involved in this series as a south area of the European geographical region crossing this territory. The north of the Western Kazakhstan was studied by the entomologists for a long time but most of collections from this territory were kept in a fragmentary way. This manuscript is devoted to the results of the Noctuidae fauna studies collected in 2003- 2012 from the Western Kazakhstan. The list of Noctuoidea is presented in Table 1. The area of research The region under cosideration is disposed in the western region of the Kazakhstan Republic simultaneously interfaced in the eastern European and central Asian geographical regions. This region has a total area of 736 129 km² and includs the Aktobe, West Kazakhstan (former Uralsk Region), Mangystau, Atyrau and Kyzil-Orda provinces. This territory is situated on the limits of the continental arid area in a cold-temperate zone. The rhythm of precipitation is closer to the Mediterranean type and the total amount of precipitation is 100˗150 mm per year. Mainly it is the plain ground territory except for the low ridge of Mugodgary and the arid region on the interfluves of the Caspian Sea and the Aral Sea where the semidesert steppe and the north desert are joined. The semidesert steppe of the West Kazakhstan Region (Fig. 1) is a transitive subzone from steppes to deserts (RACHKOVSKAYA 1993: 323) and it is spread from N 51˚to N 49˚ across of Poduralskoe Plateau (Under Urals) and being a narrow wedge of the peneplain of the Mugodgary Mountains is spreading dry steppes to the desert zone and somewhat further to the south. The vegetation cover is heterogeneous and depends on the types of soil and calciphilouse, hemipetrophytic, hemisammophytic and hemihalophytic communities exist there. The north plane desert penetrates from N 48˚to N 36˚ and comprises the Ustyrt Plateau, the Aral Sea depression and the Caspian Lowland withing the area under consideration. Vegetation cover is characterized by the alternation of the community types on genetically heterogeneous territories (Fig. 1). The major dominants are the dwarf semishrub species of genus Artemisia and the species of genera Salsola, Anabasis, Atriplex, Nanophyton, Hammada, Suaeda, etc. The shrubs are represented by the species of genera Calligonum, Ephedra, Athrophaxis. Sagebrush and the perennial saltwort communities occupy the most part of the area (RACHKOVSKAYA et al. 2003). 598 599 Shovkoon_To Research of Noctuoidea Fauna_Z0.indd 2 13.04.16 09:35 © Entomofauna Ansfelden/Austria; download unter www.zobodat.at Fig. 1. Sv ir id o v received 24.II.2000 Summary: 630 species of the Noctuidae are listed for the modern Volgo-Ural fauna. 2 species [Mesapamea hedeni Graeser and Amphidrina amurensis Staudinger ) are noted from Europe for the first time and one more— Nycteola siculana Fuchs —from Russia. 3 species ( Catocala optata Godart , Helicoverpa obsoleta Fabricius , Pseudohadena minuta Pungeler ) are deleted from the list. Supposedly they were either erroneously determinated or incorrect noted from the region under consideration since Eversmann 's work. 289 species are recorded from the re gion in addition to Eversmann 's list. This paper is the fifth in a series of publications1 dealing with the composition of the pres ent-day fauna of noctuid-moths in the Middle Volga and the south-western Cisurals. This re gion comprises the administrative divisions of the Astrakhan, Volgograd, Saratov, Samara, Uljanovsk, Orenburg, Uralsk and Atyraus (= Gurjev) Districts, together with Tataria and Bash kiria. As was accepted in the first part of this series, only material reliably labelled, and cover ing the last 20 years was used for this study. The main collections are those of the authors: V. Despite the proximity of Sredna Gora Mountains to Sofia, the insect assemblages of this region are poorly studied. As a result of two studies carried out as a part of an Environmental Impact Assessment in the Natura 2000 Protected Areas: Sredna Gora and Popintsi, a rich diversity of insects was discovered, with 107 saproxylic and epigeobiont Coleoptera species and 355 Lepidoptera species recorded. This research was conducted during a short one-season field study in the surrounding areas of the town of Panagyurishte and Oborishte Village. Special attention was paid to protected species and their conservation status. Of the Coleoptera recorded, 22 species were of conservation significance. Forty-five Lepidoptera species of conservation importance were also recorded. KEY WORDS.WORDS. • Moths of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge
MOTHS OF UMATILLA NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE: Results from 10 sites Sampled May 22-23, 2017 Dana Ross 1005 NW 30th Street Corvallis, OR 97330 (541) 758-3006 [email protected] SUMMARY Macro-moths were sampled from the Umatilla National Wildlife Refuge for a third time 22-23 May, 2017 as part of an ongoing pollinator inventory. Blacklight traps were deployed for a single night at ten sites representative of major plant communities in the McCormack and Paterson Units. A grand total of 331 specimens and 36 moth species were sampled. Of those, 17 species (47%) were documented from the refuge for the first time. In a somewhat larger geographical context, 21 species were recorded for the first (8), second (7) or third (6) time from Morrow County, Oregon while 4 species were documented for the first (1) or second (3) time from Benton County, Washington. INTRODUCTION National Wildlife Refuges protect important habitats for many plant and animal species. Refuge inventories have frequently included plants, birds and mammals, but insects - arguably the most abundant and species-rich group in any terrestrial habitat - have largely been ignored. Small size, high species richness and a lack of identification resources have all likely contributed to their being overlooked. Certain groups such as moths, however, can be easily and inexpensively sampled using light traps and can be identified by regional moth taxonomists. Once identified, many moth species can be tied to known larval hostplant species at a given site, placing both insect and plant within a larger ecological context. Moths along with butterflies belong to the insect Order Lepidoptera.

Age-specific life table studies of potential strains or host races of Calophasia lunula (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) (Hufn.) reared on Dalmation toadflax, Linaria genistifolia ssp. dalmatica (L.) Maire and Petitmengen, or yellow toadflax, Linaria vulgaris (Mill.) by Todd Alan Breitenfeldt A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Entomology Montana State University © Copyright by Todd Alan Breitenfeldt (1995) Abstract: Although the possible existence of host races in phytophagous biological control agents has only recently come under general consideration when screening and releasing these agents, the implications for successful establishment and impact on the target weed, and for minimizing impacts on nontarget plant species are enormous. The issues of potential host races and strain differences were investigated for different populations of the defoliating moth, Caloohasia lunula, which attacks Dalmatian toadflax, Linaria genistifolia ssp. dalmatica (L.) Maire and Petitmengen, and yellow toadflax, Linaria vulgaris (Mill'.), using age-specific life table studies. Life table studies of the three Calophasia populations (one obtained from Europe on Yellow toadflax, another obtained from yellow toadflax in Europe and established on Dalmatian toadflax in Montana, and the third obtained from Dalmatian toadflax from Yugoslavia) were tested on both Dalmatian toadflax and yellow toadflax. Little evidence of host races was evident. Caloohasia lunula rates of development and weight gain, survivorship,
