Smith (Editor) Historical series Vol 14 No 1 24 September 1987 The Bulletin of the British Museum (Natural History), instituted in 1949, is issued in four scientific series, Botany, Entomology, Geology (incorporating Mineralogy) and Zoology, and an Historical series. Papers in the Bulletin are primarily the results of research carried out on the unique and ever-growing collections of the Museum, both by the scientific staff of the Museum and by specialists from elsewhere who make use of the Museum's resources. Many of the papers are works of reference that will remain indispensable for years to come. Parts are published at irregular intervals as they become ready, each is complete in itself, available separately, and individually priced. Volumes contain about 300 pages and several volumes may appear within a calendar year. Subscriptions may be placed for one or more of the series on either an Annual or Per Volume basis. Beneficial Effects of Flower-Dwelling Predators on Their Host Plant

We examined the effects of the sit-and-wait spider Misumenops argenteus (Thomisidae) on the herbivore assemblage and ®tness of the perennial woody shrub Tri- chogoniopsis adenantha (Asteraceae). Because crab spiders prey on both pollinators and phytophagous insects, they can have potentially negative and positive effects on plants. In a manipulative experiment using paired plants, spiders decreased the density of sucking and some endophagous herbivores on the leaves and capitula and reduced the number of damaged achenes produced by the plants. Damaged capitula had a higher proportion of fertilized achenes in plants with spiders than without spiders, but not undamaged capitula. These results indicate that M. argenteus exerted a double positive effect on seed production in T. adenantha. The effect of M. argenteus on herbivores may be taxon speci®c and vary among years with different herbivore abundances. BENNETT2 1University of Florida, Tropical Research and Education Center, 18905 S.W. 280th Street, Homestead, FL 33031 2University of Florida, Department of Entomology and Nematology, 970 Hull Road, Gainesville, FL 32611 ABSTRACT Two hundred and ninety-six species of arthropods are associated with Annona spp. The genus Bephratelloides (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae) and the species Cerconota anonella (Sepp) (Lepidoptera: Oecophoridae) are the most serious pests of Annona spp. Host plant and distribution are given for each pest species. Key Words: Annona, arthropods, Insecta. RESUMEN Doscientas noventa y seis especies de arthrópodos están asociadas con Annona spp. en el Neotrópico. De las especies mencionadas, el género Bephratelloides (Hyme- noptera: Eurytomidae) y la especie Cerconota anonella (Sepp) (Lepidoptera: Oecopho- ridae) sobresalen como las plagas mas importantes de Annona spp. Se mencionan las plantas hospederas y la distribución de cada especie. The genus Annona is confined almost entirely to tropical and subtropical America and the Caribbean region (Safford 1914). Edible species include Annona muricata L. (soursop), A. squamosa L. (sugar apple), A. cherimola Mill. (cherimoya), and A. retic- ulata L. (custard apple). Each geographical region has its own distinctive pest fauna, composed of indigenous and introduced species (Bennett & Alam 1985, Brathwaite et al. 1986, Brunner et al. 1975, D’Araujo et al. 1968, Medina-Gaud et al. 1989, Peña et al. 1984, Posada 1989, Venturi 1966). These reports place emphasis on the broader as- pects of pest species. Aczel ^ Introduction The original generic name Plagiotoma was proposed by Loew in 1873 as a subgenus of Trypeta, with obliqua Say designated as type, but is preoccupied by Clarapede and Lachmann in 1858, in Protozoa. The valid name Tomoplagia was proposed by Coquillett (1910, p. 615) to replace Plagiotoma. The first attempt to bring together the de- scribed species was made in 1914 by Hendel, when he hsted 20 species and published the first key. His paper dealt with 16 new forms, the others having been described by Say in 1829 (obliqua), Loew in 1862 (discolor) and 1873 (biseriata), and by Williston in 1896 (incom- pleta). In 1918 Lutz and Costa Lima described three new species from Brazil (jonasi, rudolphi, and trivittata) . The genus remained untouched until the present paper except for the description of a few new species by Curran (1931), Costa Lima (1934) and Hering (1937, 1938, 1941, 1942). Hering (1941) published a partial key that contained nine Peruvian species. In all these subsequent papers the authors used principally the wing pattern and the black markings on the thorax and abdomen. The late F. H. Benjamin (1934) was the first to describe the genital apparatus in both sexes and the early stages of T. obliqua (S&j), The writer (1950) included 30 species in his catalog of the family as it occurs in the Neotropical region. -
