The drafters hope that this further documen- tation will aid individuals and groups in studying and reflecting on the Ecumenical Call itself, and for that reason the Call itself is reproduced immediately after this Preface. The documentation largely follows the structure of the Call and intends to provide necessary background information as well as basic bib- lical, theological and ethical considerations to support and unfold its basic message. The documentation has been compiled by the same drafting group that prepared the text of the declaration. No individual authors are indi- cated for the different parts of the documentation, since most of these are the result of collective work. Much of the original research and theological reflection was undertaken by the first drafting group that prepared the Initial Statement towards an Ecumenical Declaration on Just Peace, which was circulated widely in 2009. The theological rationale developed in the Initial Statement had in principle been received positively among member churches and ecumenical partner groups. It was subsequently decided that the declaration should be a rela- tively concise text and that the analysis and argument behind the declara- tion should be developed more fully in a “companion document.” The initial statement then became the basis for the preparation of this docu- mentation. Where necessary, the material from the initial statement has been revised or rewritten in the light of critical comments received, but the essential thrust of the argument has been retained, honouring both v the excellent work done by the first drafting group as well as the many comments which had urged that the statement be retained. Further material has been added to this opening part of the docu- mentation, that is, the first two chapters and some parts of the fourth chapter. The third chapter places the process of preparing the Ecumeni- cal Call to Just Peace into its specific historical and institutional context, the “Decade to Overcome Violence.” The declaration and this supporting documentation are being published to mark the official end of the decade and to provide a strong impulse for the International Ecumenical Peace Convocation, which will take place in Kingston, Jamaica, in May 2011 under the theme “Glory to God and Peace on Earth.” The final chapter of the documentation focuses on “Just Peace Practices.” It is built around first-hand knowledge available and accessible to the drafting group. Information provided by churches in response to the initial statement has been used as well. It is the hope of the draft- An Ecumenical Call to Just Peace ing group that this concluding chapter will be expanded and amplified by examples of “good practice” collected during the IEPC, especially during “Guide our feet into the way of peace” (Luke 1:79) the workshops. Preamble: This call is a concerted Christian voice addressed primarily to the On behalf of the drafting group, worldwide Christian community. Inspired by the example of Jesus of Naza- Rev. Dr. Konrad Raiser reth, it invites Christians to commit themselves to the Way of Just Peace. Aware that the promise of peace is a core value of all religions, it reaches out to all who seek peace according to their own religious traditions and commit- ments. The call is received by the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches and commended for study, reflection, collaboration and com- mon action. It is issued in response to a WCC Assembly recommendation in Porto Alegre, Brazil, 2006, and builds on insights gained in the course of the ecumenical “Decade to Overcome Violence, 2001-2010: Churches Seeking Reconciliation and Peace.” Just Peace embodies a fundamental shift in ethical practice. It implies a dif- ferent framework of analysis and criteria for action. This call signals the shift and indicates some of the implications for the life and witness of the churches. A resource document, the Just Peace Companion, presents more developed biblical, theological and ethical considerations, proposals for further explora- tion and examples of good practice. It is hoped that these materials, together with the commitments arising from the International Ecumenical Peace Convocation in Kingston, Jamaica, in May 2011, under the theme “Glory to God and Peace on Earth,” will assist the forthcoming Assembly of the WCC to reach a new ecumenical consensus on justice and peace. vi JUST Peace Companion 1 1 Justice embracing peace: Without peace, can there be justice? 5 Wherever there is forgiveness, respect for human dignity, generos- Without justice, can there be peace?     THE BIBLE & CRITICAL THEORY Divinely Sanctioned Violence Against Women Biblical Marriage and the Example of the Sotah of Numbers 5 Johanna Stiebert, University of Leeds Abstract Responding to an important volume by William Cavanaugh (2009), this article argues that biblical violence executed or sanctioned by God or one of his mediators is appropriately designated religious violence. The author looks particularly at gender-based and sexual violence in marriage, challenging some prominent contemporary notions of “biblical marriage.” Focused attention is brought to Num. 5:11-31, detailing the ritual prescribed for the sotah, a woman suspected of adultery. The text is applied both to illuminate religious violence in marriage and to explore and highlight why the ritual, sometimes referred to by biblical interpreters as “strange” or “perplexing,” remains an important topic in our present-day contexts. Key Words Sotah; marriage; adultery; gender-based violence (GBV); intimate partner violence (IPV); religious violence. Introduction In this article I argue that, contrary to the proposal put forth by William Cavanaugh (2009), violence in the Bible can appropriately be designated religious violence. More specifically, I suggest that biblical violence can be classified as religious violence when it is perpetrated by God, or by human mediators who claim to be carrying out God’s instructions, or when it is given divine mandate, or framed by religious justification or religious significance. In the human realm, biblical violence takes numerous forms and is perpetrated by and against men and women. My discussion in this article, however, focuses on divinely sanctioned violence perpetrated by men against women, especially in the context of marriage.

Peace is especially desirable by people for whom the world is better when they are not in danger of armed conflict. However, even soldiers and sailors on active duty may wish for peace. One of the important paths to peace is through understanding. This purpose of this chapter is to provide an introduction to core Jewish texts and examples of some of the Jewish views found in these texts on the subject of peace and understanding. TANAKH – HEBREW BIBLE – JEWISH HOLY SCRIPTURES The Hebrew Bible is called Tanakh.1 Tanakh is an acronym. “T” stands for Torah, meaning “Teachings”, and refers to the first five booKs of the TanaKh, which contain the stories of creation, the founders of the Jewish faith, the exodus from slavery, and the forty years of wandering in the wilderness. Interspersed among the stories in the Torah are 613 commandments called mitz- vot that formed the original basis of Judaism. “N” stands for Nevi-im, meaning “Prophets”, and contains eight books of prophecy, stories and legends. “K” stands for Ketuvim, meaning “Writings”, and contains eleven books that include history, parables, philosophy and poetry. Some people now avoid the term Old Testament or New Testament, opting instead for “Older” and “Newer” Testaments, “First” and “Second” Covenant, Hebrew or Christian Bible, though none of these are perfect. Some prefer to us the terms that Jewish and Christian people use to identify “their own” books: Tanakh, Christian Canon, or the specific genre, such as Gospels, Letters, Pastorals, etc. For a fuller exploration of the United Church’s relationship to Judaism, see Bearing Faithful Witness; United Church-Jewish Relations Today; a study document approved by the 36th General Council of the UCC. TaNaKh – is an acronym from three Hebrew letters (“T+N+K”), like U.N.E.S.C.O. or N.A.T.O.; T = TORAH is a term derived from archery, having to do with “hitting the target”; it also means “instruction” or “teachings”, and “law”. It refers to the first 5 books of the Bible – the books of Moses.     A. THE TANAK AS THE FOUNDATION OF JUDAISM THE TANAK, OR THE JEWISH BIBLE, stands as the quintessential foundation for Jewish life, identity, practice, and thought from antiquity through contemporary times. The five books of the Torah, or the Instruction of G-d to the Jewish people and the world at large, constitute the foundation of the Tanak. According to Jewish tradition (Exod 19—Num 10), the Torah was revealed to the nation Israel at Mount Sinai while the people were journeying from Egypt through the wilderness of Sinai on their way to return to the land of Israel to take up residence in the land promised by G-d to their ancestors, Abraham and Sarah; Isaac and Rebecca; Jacob, Rachel and Leah; and the twelve sons of Jacob. The four books of the Nevi’im Rishonim, or the Former Prophets, provide an account of Israel’s life in the land from the time of the conquest under Joshua until the time of the Babylonian exile, when Jerusalem and the Temple were destroyed and Jews were exiled to Babylonia and elsewhere in the world. The four books of the Nevi’im Ahronim, or the Latter Prophets, provide an assessment of the reasons why G-d chose to exile Jews from the land of Israel and the scenarios by which G-d would choose to restore Jews to the land of Israel once the exile was completed. The eleven books of the Ketuvim, or the Writings, include a variety of books of different form and purpose that address various aspects of Jewish worship, critical thought, future expectations, history, and life in the world, both in the land of Israel and beyond.

Our program is organized around four areas of study to reflect the breadth, depth, and relevance of Jewish Studies as an academic discipline, and builds on the expertise of our world-class faculty. The four areas of study are: I. Classical Judaism The civilization of the people of the book has produced a rich, classical literature: the Hebrew Bible, the Dead Sea Scrolls, Hellenistic texts, as well as rabbinic literature from the earliest targumic and midrashic interpretations through the Talmuds and geonic traditions to medieval commentators on Talmudic texts. We situate these texts in their linguistic and cultural contexts, and study them with philological rigour. Our students learn to trace the development of the Jewish imagination in its interactions with surrounding cultures and to appreciate its many expressions: legal, exegetical, mythic, and mystical.
