The Centre is based at Bristol Baptist College. Other titles under review include Rowan Williams on christology, Joshua Searle (Tutor at Spurgeon’s College) on theology after Christendom, and Lauren Winner on the dangers of Christian practice. Andy Goodliff Editor Gregory A. Boyd, Crucifixion of the Warrior God. 2 Vols. (Minneapolis: Fortress, 2017). Greg Boyd begins his magnum opus by explaining the conundrum of Old Testament violence that drove him to write it. ‘I am […] caught between the Scylla of Jesus’ affirmation of the OT as divinely inspired and the Charybdis of his nonviolent revelation of God’ (p.xxix). He is motivated by a sense that all the attempts that have been offered to account for the violence of the OT were unsatisfactory. In response to this conundrum, then, he writes this book, consisting of 1445 closely-argued, and occasionally rather discursive pages. In it he offers a novel way of reading the Old Testament, which he calls the ‘Cruciform Hermeneutic’. He describes it in his introduction like this: When we interpret these [violent] portraits of God with the resolved conviction that the true character of God is fully revealed in the crucified Christ, we are able to see beyond the surface appearance of these portraits (viz. beyond what mere exegesis can unveil) and discern the cruciform character of God in their “depth”… The driving conviction of the Cruciform Hermeneutic is that since Calvary gives us a perspective of God’s character that is superior to what people in the OT had, we can also enjoy a superior perspective of what was actually going on when OT authors depicted God engaging in and commanding violence (p.xxxiv). Essentially the Cruciform Hermeneutic is defined by the choice to use the Cross as the supreme lens for examining the rest of scripture. So far, so uncontroversial. However, this decision, as Boyd develops it, has three distinct elements. First, just as at the cross God is both acting and acted upon, so the way that God ‘breathed’ scripture should be regarded less as a unilateral act of inspiration, but as a dialectical activity (pp.480ff.); a position that would not surprise those who are familiar with his allegiance to Openness Theology. This rather controversial- sounding suggestion is then boiled down to the rather more bland assertion that God does not over-ride the human authors but that their personhood remains intact in the ‘inspiring’ process. Stage One Stage one presents definitions of three terms—‘theodicy’, ‘pain’, and ‘suffering’. Needless to say, agreement on the meanings of these terms allows reader and writer to stand on common ground with regard to their use throughout the paper. Stage Two In stage two, following the definitions, and under the rubric of “Some Religious Perspectives on Pain and Suffering”, the paper reviews a number of faiths, ancient and modern, on their attitude to pain and/or suffering. The review serves to locate the paper’s subsequent arguments on suffering and evil within a global perspective. Stage Three Thereafter, discussion on suffering and evil reflects on a pair of ironies I find of considerable significance for Christian theodicy. Note that this paper offers no exhaustive answer on theodicy [as defined below]. Rather it proposes the sine qua non for beginning any biblically based Christian theodicy. Theodicies in general are doomed to fail to the extent that they give inadequate address to the question of evil’s origins. In Bart Ehrman’s opinion, humanity’s most important question concerns why we suffer.

    Doubting God’s Goodness: Life in a Time of War Rich Nathan May 20, 2012 Apologetics: Doubting God Series Ephesians 6:10-12 I recently heard Dr. Greg Boyd, a pastor from Minneapolis, give the following illustration. I’m expanding on it with a huge degree of pastoral liberty. But the basic idea came from Dr. Greg Boyd. Imagine its June 5, 1944. You are living in France and have rented a beach house and you are planning to vacation with your family on the beach at a place called Normandy. You’ve been working hard all year and are looking forward to kicking back, relaxing, drinking good French wine, swimming in the surf with your children, and enjoying the beach for the next month. Well, to your surprise, that night, June 5, 1944, the sounds of planes flying overhead disturb your sleep. Paratroopers start dropping into your yard. And in the morning, before dawn, flotillas of landing craft land on just the spot you’ve planted your beach umbrella. You, of course, are very upset especially after one of the beach invaders breaks your favorite beach chair when he rolls over it with his tank. And then you have to contend with all the shooting and shells that are landing in your yard. You are in the backyard trying to get a little peace as you lie in your hammock. You finally lose your patience and start screaming at everyone, “Stop it! Stop it! I’m on vacation!” Dr. Boyd’s point was that the problem most Christians have and, indeed, most people have with all of the suffering and pain that exists in our world is that we basically believe that life should be like a vacation instead of like a war.

Boyd’s Cross Vision Paul Miller Email: [email protected] Abstract This paper critiques Greg Boyd’s Cross Vision: How the Crucifixion of Jesus Makes Sense of Old Testament Violence. The paper commends Boyd’s recognition that the God of the Bible prefers to extend grace and life instead of judgment and death, but addresses Boyd’s woefully inadequate hermeneutic—a hermeneutic based on a radically minimized concept of “revelation.” The paper addresses three basic concerns with Boyd’s approach: first, how Boyd’s hermeneutic fatally undermines the very concept of “inspired revelation”; second, that Boyd’s hermeneutic of “Christ crucified” is accurate but woefully incomplete; and third, that Boyd’s hermeneutic in continually contradicting major biblical themes is fatally hostile to Scripture. How else can you honestly describe a depiction of God, for example, ordering his people to mercilessly annihilate every member of the Midianites except for the virgin girls…?”1 And how does this OT picture harmonize with the New Testament Jesus, who came to self- sacrificially give his life for sinners rather than to take their lives?     THE BIBLE & CRITICAL THEORY Divinely Sanctioned Violence Against Women Biblical Marriage and the Example of the Sotah of Numbers 5 Johanna Stiebert, University of Leeds Abstract Responding to an important volume by William Cavanaugh (2009), this article argues that biblical violence executed or sanctioned by God or one of his mediators is appropriately designated religious violence. The author looks particularly at gender-based and sexual violence in marriage, challenging some prominent contemporary notions of “biblical marriage.” Focused attention is brought to Num. 5:11-31, detailing the ritual prescribed for the sotah, a woman suspected of adultery. The text is applied both to illuminate religious violence in marriage and to explore and highlight why the ritual, sometimes referred to by biblical interpreters as “strange” or “perplexing,” remains an important topic in our present-day contexts. Key Words Sotah; marriage; adultery; gender-based violence (GBV); intimate partner violence (IPV); religious violence. Introduction In this article I argue that, contrary to the proposal put forth by William Cavanaugh (2009), violence in the Bible can appropriately be designated religious violence. More specifically, I suggest that biblical violence can be classified as religious violence when it is perpetrated by God, or by human mediators who claim to be carrying out God’s instructions, or when it is given divine mandate, or framed by religious justification or religious significance. In the human realm, biblical violence takes numerous forms and is perpetrated by and against men and women. My discussion in this article, however, focuses on divinely sanctioned violence perpetrated by men against women, especially in the context of marriage.

    Jason Byassee, Vancouver School of Theology Th 6/780 Contemporary Trinitarian Thought Fall 2021, Tuesday mornings 9 AM-12. The 20th century saw a remarkable revival of a doctrine once considered dead and deadly: the doctrine of the Trinity. This revival was kicked off by Karl Barth and continues to this day as theologians produce work of remarkable creativity and practitioners do likewise. This course will focus on the doctrine of the Trinity in both contemporary and classical exposition, since the former cannot be understood without the latter. Students will study one classical interpreter, such as Tertullian, Augustine, the Cappadocians, Julian, Karl Barth, Karl Rahner, Sarah Coakley, Sallie McFague (note: classical doesn’t have to mean dead!). You will present your findings on this figure in class. Students will also study a contemporary expositor of the doctrine, such as Richard Rohr, Cynthia Bourgeault, Miroslav Volf, John Zizioulas (like the first list this one could expand infinitely). These folks do something unique with the doctrine—trying to emphasize how it shapes our view of humanity, society, spirituality, politics, gender, or nearly any other created thing of your choice. We will also each read the material for class which reflects both classical and contemporary approaches. Students will take turns leading off discussion for the day. Students will conclude the course with an appropriate project to demonstrate what they have learned—an academic paper perhaps of some 15 or so pages, a series of sermons, a catechetical exercise, plans for a political gathering—the possibilities are nearly endless.     PORVOO PRAYER DIARY 2021 The Porvoo Declaration commits the churches which have signed it ‘to share a common life’ and ‘to pray for and with one another’. An important way of doing this is to pray through the year for the Porvoo churches and their Dioceses. The Prayer Diary is a list of Porvoo Communion Dioceses or churches covering each Sunday of the year, mindful of the many calls upon compilers of intercessions, and the environmental and production costs of printing a more elaborate list. Those using the calendar are invited to choose one day each week on which they will pray for the Porvoo churches. It is hoped that individuals and parishes, cathedrals and religious orders will make use of the Calendar in their own cycle of prayer week by week. In addition to the churches which have approved the Porvoo Declaration, we continue to pray for churches with observer status. Observers attend all the meetings held under the Agreement. The Calendar may be freely copied or emailed for wider circulation. The Prayer Diary is updated once a year.
