The Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies Bibliography on Worship Studies Edited by Mark A. Torgerson, Ph.D. December 2019 The Master and Doctor of Worship Studies programs are based significantly on the eight volumes of The Complete Library of Christian Worship. Numerous articles and bibliographies appear in these volumes. Because they form a basis of knowledge for our program, they will not be cited but once in the reference materials below. The following bibliography covers additional resources (by no means exhaustive), some of which may be required reading for courses in the Master and Doctor of Worship Studies programs. In light of the fact that Christian worship is always embodied within the cultural context of a community, the resources mentioned in the following bibliography will refer to cultural analyses as well as theological studies. Many titles could easily be categorized under several “headings,” so it would be wise to explore multiple areas when building a list of possible resources to examine. Recent titles added to the bibliography are located just after the table of contents. The titles mentioned are also integrated into the bibliography under the appropriate headings. Wesley, Jr. Protestant Worship: A Multisensory Introduction for Students and Practitioners. Nashville: Abingdon Press, 2019. [Allen has developed a primer for Protestant worship understanding and practice using a metaphoric approach based on elements of physics (including time, space, matter, and energy). Various chapters define and examine ritual, marking time, worship space, sacraments/ordinances (baptism and Eucharist), preaching and congregational singing, and funerals and weddings. Historical, theological, and application-oriented content is included for each topic seeking to address both formal and informal approaches to worship.] Bibliography of Worship Studies, 2, Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies Berger, Theresa, ed. Full of Your Glory: Liturgy, Cosmos, Creation. Collegeville, M.N.: The Liturgical Press, 2019. [Recognition of the significance of the non-human creation to God is pursued in this collection of essays originally presented at the 2018 Yale Institute of Sacred Music Liturgy Conference. Seventeen essays examining liturgy from a wide ecumenical range are organized into sets focused on identifying biblical and historical insights, theological interpretations and implications, and contemporary worship practices. Celebrating the inter-connectedness of the human and non-human creation in corporate worship will be facilitated through the work of this collection.] Bill, J. Brent. Holy Silence: The Gift of Quaker Spirituality. Second edition. Grand Rapids: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing, 2016. [Bill has revised (originally published in 2005) a primer exploring the “Quaker sacrament” of silence. He provides a definition and background into a Quaker understanding of silence for those familiar and unfamiliar with Quaker worship. The value of silence and its recognition in day to day living is addressed. Practical steps toward the spiritual pursuit of silence in solitary and communal settings is included, along with a glossary of Quaker terms and suggestions for additional reading.] Cherry, Constance M. Worship Like Jesus: A Guide for Every Follower. Nashville: Abingdon Press, 2019. [Cherry provides a focus on the person and practice of Jesus Christ in seeking how to assess the many changes faith communities have experienced in worship in the last fifty years. Chapters examining the priority, object, divine narrative, conversation, and community of worship (among others) follow a common pattern of asking how we worship now, how Jesus worshiped, how Jesus would worship today, and determing how we will worship as disciples of Jesus? The book is intended to be used in community so that healthy dialog and renewal can be achieved in a congregational setting. Resources for provoking critical reflection and change are included.] Cornou, Maria Eugenia, and John D. Witvliet. At Psalms School/En la escuela de lost Salmos. Chicago: GIA Publications, 2019. [Written in English and Spanish for children from ages five to seven, this beautifully illustrated book explains how the psalms teach people to listen to and talk with God in the church, worship, and daily life. Examples of biblical psalms oriented toward many themes, including worship, lament, offering, and repentance, ground the teachings and reinforce knowledge of scripture. Authored by members of the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship, this book could contribute to a substantial early understanding of worship for children.]
