Stage One Stage one presents definitions of three terms—‘theodicy’, ‘pain’, and ‘suffering’. Needless to say, agreement on the meanings of these terms allows reader and writer to stand on common ground with regard to their use throughout the paper. Stage Two In stage two, following the definitions, and under the rubric of “Some Religious Perspectives on Pain and Suffering”, the paper reviews a number of faiths, ancient and modern, on their attitude to pain and/or suffering. The review serves to locate the paper’s subsequent arguments on suffering and evil within a global perspective. Stage Three Thereafter, discussion on suffering and evil reflects on a pair of ironies I find of considerable significance for Christian theodicy. Note that this paper offers no exhaustive answer on theodicy [as defined below]. Rather it proposes the sine qua non for beginning any biblically based Christian theodicy. Theodicies in general are doomed to fail to the extent that they give inadequate address to the question of evil’s origins. In Bart Ehrman’s opinion, humanity’s most important question concerns why we suffer. -

Doubting God’s Goodness: Life in a Time of War Rich Nathan May 20, 2012 Apologetics: Doubting God Series Ephesians 6:10-12 I recently heard Dr. Greg Boyd, a pastor from Minneapolis, give the following illustration. I’m expanding on it with a huge degree of pastoral liberty. But the basic idea came from Dr. Greg Boyd. Imagine its June 5, 1944. You are living in France and have rented a beach house and you are planning to vacation with your family on the beach at a place called Normandy. You’ve been working hard all year and are looking forward to kicking back, relaxing, drinking good French wine, swimming in the surf with your children, and enjoying the beach for the next month. Well, to your surprise, that night, June 5, 1944, the sounds of planes flying overhead disturb your sleep. Paratroopers start dropping into your yard. And in the morning, before dawn, flotillas of landing craft land on just the spot you’ve planted your beach umbrella. You, of course, are very upset especially after one of the beach invaders breaks your favorite beach chair when he rolls over it with his tank. And then you have to contend with all the shooting and shells that are landing in your yard. You are in the backyard trying to get a little peace as you lie in your hammock. You finally lose your patience and start screaming at everyone, “Stop it! Stop it! I’m on vacation!” Dr. Boyd’s point was that the problem most Christians have and, indeed, most people have with all of the suffering and pain that exists in our world is that we basically believe that life should be like a vacation instead of like a war. -

Heavenly Father, we’re grateful that we always could count on Your Presence, by the fact that You are omniscient and omnipotent, but we realize in this hour as in the Exodus from Egypt into Canaan’s land that You came down to be with Your prophet. And then when Your prophet was off the scene, You moved the people in Yourself Lord, into the promised land and we know that our Joshua of this hour is the Lord Jesus Christ himself. And we appreciate that so much; the Holy Spirit doing the work, the Pillar of Fire leading us onward. We pray tonight, as we study Your Word, It shall…the very Life within It shall feed our souls, and enlighten our hearts and our minds and give us that extraordinary life Lord, which is of You in this particular hour to change mortality to immortality Lord. And we bring forth the dead out of the ground to take people away in a Rapture. We know that’s got to happen to somebody because it’s Your Word: it’s THUS SAITH THE LORD. The prophet already told us that the Shout was made available to us, everything under the Seals and the Thunders that was requisite to put us in the Rapture; we already had. And went on to tell us, we were already into the Resurrection. So Father, we believe tonight that is true and whatsoever, therefore, is necessary; the Life of the Word coming forth, that will come forth and we count ourselves a part of It in Jesus Christ’s Name, Amen. -

Two people can appear to live identical lives, yet one may be living in unrighteousness/self‐righteousness and the other be living in Christ’s righteousness. Boyd’s Cross Vision Paul Miller Email: [email protected] Abstract This paper critiques Greg Boyd’s Cross Vision: How the Crucifixion of Jesus Makes Sense of Old Testament Violence. The paper commends Boyd’s recognition that the God of the Bible prefers to extend grace and life instead of judgment and death, but addresses Boyd’s woefully inadequate hermeneutic—a hermeneutic based on a radically minimized concept of “revelation.” The paper addresses three basic concerns with Boyd’s approach: first, how Boyd’s hermeneutic fatally undermines the very concept of “inspired revelation”; second, that Boyd’s hermeneutic of “Christ crucified” is accurate but woefully incomplete; and third, that Boyd’s hermeneutic in continually contradicting major biblical themes is fatally hostile to Scripture. Boyd argues that the OT presents “some portraits of God … [that] are, quite frankly, really ugly! How else can you honestly describe a depiction of God, for example, ordering his people to mercilessly annihilate every member of the Midianites except for the virgin girls…?”1 And how does this OT picture harmonize with the New Testament Jesus, who came to self- sacrificially give his life for sinners rather than to take their lives? The answer, according to Boyd, is that it doesn’t. -

They had arrived at the promised land decades earlier, but the people had rebelled—refusing to trust God to give them the land. They believed it would be better to die in the wilderness than follow God (Num. 14:2), so God sent them into the wilderness for 40 years (vv. 28-29). In time, all of the adults died except for Joshua, Caleb, and Moses. The children grew up and more children were born. The Israelites disobeyed God time and again, but God still provided for them. He planned to keep His promise to give Israel the promised land. -

What Happened at Central Plains Mennonite Conference?
EAST UNION MENNONITE CHURCH VOLUME XXV, ISSUE 7 J U L Y 2 0 1 5 What happened at Central Plains Mennonite Conference? The 15th Annual Meeting of Central Plains Mennonite Conference (CPC) was held June 18- 21 at The Woodland Hills Church, St. Paul. MN. The theme for the weekend was “Joyfully Following Jesus: Communities Centered in Christ.” The back drop for the Delegate Work Sessions was worship time with Dr. Greg Boyd. Greg is the co-founder of Woodland Hills Church in St. Paul where he serves as Senior Pastor. He is an internationally recognized theologian and author who has authored or co-authored 18 books and numerous academic articles, including his best-selling and award-winning Letters From a Skeptic and his recent books Repenting of Religion and The Myth of a Christian Nation. He talked to us about what the Kingdom should look like. He said we should look like, serve like and love like Jesus. He encouraged us to celebrate the Kingdom. The work of the conference centered on hearing about the various ministries serving the congregations of our conference. We celebrated it having been the 4th year in a row the conference has finished the financial year in the black. A New Covenant for CPC was shared about. The booklet, Being God’s Faithful Community, by Tim Detweiler was introduced. It is a 4 session study which will help us together process the Covenant and how to implement it in our church. We are encouraged to study it together as a congregation. The conference has a Conflict Management Support Team consisting of four professional persons with expertise to lead seminars for groups or congregations to improve communication skills. -

ABOUT THE BIFOCAL RECEPTION HISTORY OF BALAAM Hans Ausloos University of the Free State Université catholique de Louvain – F.R.S.-FNRS Abstract Balaam counts among the most enigmatic characters within the Old Testament. Not everyone has the privilege of meeting an angel, and being addressed by a donkey. Moreover, the Biblical Balaam, as he is presented in Num. 22-24, has given rise to multiple interpretations: did the biblical authors want to narrate about a pagan diviner, who intended to curse the Israelites, but who was manipulated – against his will – by God in order to bless them, or was he rather considered to be a real prophet like Elijah or Isaiah? Anyway, that is at least the way he has been perceived by a segment of Christianity, considering him as one of the prophets who announced Jesus as the Christ? In the first section of this contribution, which I warmheartedly dedicate to Professor Hendrik ‘Bossie’ Bosman – we first met precisely twenty years ago during a research stay at Stellenbosch University in August 1997 – I will present the ambiguous presentation of Balaam that is given in Numbers 22-24 concisely. Secondly, I will concentrate on Balaam’s presentation in the other books of the Bible. Being aware of the fact that the reception history of the Pentateuch is one of Bossie’s fields of interest, in the last section I will show how the bifocal Biblical presentation of Balaam has left its traces on the reception of this personage in Christian arts. -

Cox Let us pray: There is a part of me that sometimes wonders how willing we are to dive into your Word and your messages for us. Whether we are afraid to hear the message or are reluctant to understand what you are really saying to us. We really do long to hear your voice Oh God, and so we simply pray that you would speak. Then the second part of that might be that we would listen courageously. Search us, break us, and send us as your sons and daughters. May we be bold to listen and even bolder to tell your story, the story of Jesus and his love. Amen. Last week in worship, I started with reading you a story by Dr. Seuss. This week, I want to begin by telling you a story. Now in order for you to dive into the story, I feel like you need to know three simple things. First - our youngest daughter Elisabeth has two best friends named Josi. Second important fact about this story is that school Josi lives 22 minutes north of us, Church Josi lives 22 minutes south of us. The third important fact for this story is that our Elisabeth and school Josi go to the Seneca Valley High School. Last weekend on Friday when Elisabeth and I were out and about, I asked some random dad questions like whether she had any plans with her friends over the weekend. -

Person, series editor Parashat Balak Study Guide Themes Theme 1: The Seer Balaam—Have Vision Will Travel Theme 2: It’s a Slippery Slope—the Dangers of Foreign Women INTRODUCTION n Parashat Balak the Israelites are camped on the plains of Moab, ready Ito enter Canaan. In the midst of their final preparations to enter the land God promised to their ancestors, yet another obstacle emerges. Balak, king of Moab, grows concerned about the fierce reputation of the Israelites, which he observed in the Israelites’ encounter with the Amorites (Numbers 21:21–32). Balak’s subjects worry that the Israelites, due to their large numbers, will devour the resources of Moab. In response, Balak hires a well-known seer named Balaam to curse the Israelites, thus reflecting the widely held belief in the ancient world that putting a curse on someone was an effective means of subduing an enemy. The standoff between the powers of the God of Israel and those of a foreign seer proves to be no contest. Even Balaam’s talking female donkey, who represents the biblical ideal of wisdom, recognizes the efficacy of God’s power—unlike her human master, the professional seer. Although hired to curse the Israelites, Balaam ends up blessing them instead. In a series of four oracles, Balaam ultimately does the opposite of what Balak desires and establishes that the power of Israel’s God is greater than even the most skilled human seers.
