And the result was not only a book, (BiAS 4),1 but a series of meetings also. Since then the University of Bamberg, on the initiative of Prof. Joachim Kügler and his team, holds a biannual conference on Bible in Africa Studies. This conference is jointly organized with colleagues in the fields of Theology and Bible Studies, and other related fields in Africa. The conference has the aim of deliberating on pressing issues in the world and, more particularly, in Africa. The initiative started with the first conference held in Germany in 2010 at the overwhelming Kloster Banz (cf. BiAS 7), with the second held in Gaborone, Botswana, in 2012 (cf. BiAS 17). In 2012, those who attended the conference on social and political issues relating to the Bible and its use in Africa unanimously decided to next hold a conference on the Bible and Violence in Africa. It was decided that the conference of 2014 should be held at the University of Namibia in Windhoek, in cooperation with colleagues from the University of Bam- berg in Germany. Because of the presence of a number of Alexander von Humboldt fellows, who indicated that they will attend, a proposal was made to the German Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to designate this conference as a Humboldt-Kolleg (a conference mainly sponsored by the Foundation to tackle pressing issues in various parts of the world). The proposal was successful and all our guests joined me in thanking the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for its generous support for this Kolleg. Without this sponsorship we would not have been able to present such a successful event for this particular week of discussing an issue very close to the heart of Biblical scholars and all Christians. We were overwhelmed with applications for papers from colleagues in various countries in Africa and also Germany. Colleagues from Nigeria, 1 All the volumes of BiAS series are listed at the very end of this volume. 7 BiAS 20 | HUNTER & KÜGLER, The Bible and Violence in Africa | UBP 2016 Tanzania, Kenya, Cameroon, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Namibia indicated their attendance, which is also an indication of the enormous interest that exists in the theme of Violence and the Bible. The continual and, in certain countries continuous, violence that upset the livelihood of enormous numbers of inhabitants of Africa is well- known. The current refugee crisis rocking mainly the African and Euro- pean continents (but also influencing the rest of the world), bringing with it a major humanitarian crisis, is of such a scale that crisis meet- ings have been held all over the world in order to amicably address, not only the intense humanitarian consequences for the people and peoples involved, but also to address the main cause of the migration crisis, namely the extreme violence that uproots people so much that they leave their livelihood, the places where they have been born, and where gen- erations have lived, for nowhere but for the hope that they would be re- ceived somewhere, not to live as normal citizens, but at least in safety, albeit as refugees. The violence in Africa is, to a large extend, even unjustifiably so, attrib- uted to religious differences, particularly, religious extremity. In many cases this may not be the main or real reason for violence, and religion may in many cases only be the veil of hidden political expectations, yet religion always seems to be drawn into the picture. Of course, large scale violence, war and destruction are not the only forms of violence. African countries, such as Namibia or South Africa enjoy peace and even stability in terms of the grand and terrorist types of violence plaguing other parts of Africa. In these countries other types of violence are at the order of the day. For example, South Africa had to deal with xenophobic outbreaks recently and may not have seen the end of that. In Namibia, domestic violence is said to be the highest per capita in the world. Governments in Africa do not necessarily ignore religion but its role in society is often not recognized as much as it should be in countries with a secular constitution. This often gives an opportunity for the mush- rooming of all kinds of small and house churches. In a recent raid on such churches, the Namibian government discovered that many of these churches are driven by greed and, in many cases, by foreigners who seek the opportunity to make money by exploiting the deeply religious people of Namibia. Namibia is going through a phase of the mushrooming of churches as many other African countries are experiencing, but apart from that, 8 despite having a secular constitution, the country’s government leaders have called for a day of prayer on the 6th of March, 2014, to pray for a joint effort by all the people of the country to stop the terrible spate of gender-based violence, or so-called “passion killings”, gripping the coun- try at the time. It is most upsetting to report that between January and March, 2014, 36 people were murdered through this kind of violence in the scarcely populated country of only 2.1 million people. ABSTRACT In this contextual study I investigate why and how the traditional approach to mission, engaged by Anglican missionaries, gave rise to a dual observance of ritual among Shona Anglican Christians. I begin by establishing the significance and essence of Shona views of death and the dead, then investigate the missionaries' historical background. I highlight that Christian arrogance, in the guise of racial superiority, underlies the confrontational and condemnatory approach. Traditional views were considered evil, in their place, Shona converts were forced to adopt western Christian views as the only acceptable and valid way of coping with this eschatological reality. These views did not usually fit the Shona worldviews and religious outlook, hence the adoption of dual observance.

  • Igala People
    Igala people The Brazilian-designed Volkswagen Brasilia was sold in Nigeria as the Igala. The name of the car was derived from the Yoruba word for antelope "ìgalà" and has no connection with the Igala ethnic group. Igala are an ethnic group of Nigeria. Igala practice a number of different religions, including animism, Christianity, and Islam. The home of the Igala people is situated east of the river Niger and Benue confluence and astride the Niger in Lokoja, Kogi state of Nigeria. The area is approximately between latitude 6°30 and 8°40 north and longitude 6°30 and 7°40 east and covers an area of about 13,665 square kilometers (Oguagha P.A 1981) The Igala population is estimated at two million, they can also be found in Delta, Anambra and Edo States of Nigeria. The Igala language is closely related to the Yoruba and Itsekiri languages. In Igala tradition, infants from some parts of the kingdom, like Ankpa receive three deep horizontal cuts on each side of the face, slightly above the corners of their mouths, as a way of identifying each other. However, this practice is becoming less common. The Igalas are ruled by a father figure called the Attah. The word Attah means 'Father' and the full title of the ruler is 'Attah Igala', meaning, the Father of Igalas (the Igala word for King is Onu). Among the most revered Attahs of the Igala kingdom are Attah Ayegba Oma Idoko and Atta Ameh Oboni. According to oral tradition, Attah Ayegba Oma Idoko offered his most beloved daughter, Inikpi to ensure that the Igalas win a war of liberation from the Jukuns' dominance.

    AASR B ULLETIN 24 (November 2005) 1 Elom Dovlo University of Ghana FROM THE CHAIR It is about a year since the new executive for the AASR was elected at Tokyo. It has been a year of brainstorming to see how best we can move the AASR forward as can be seen in the report of the AASR General Secretary, Dr. Afe Adogame. He has managed to arrange meetings where some of us were able to meet and share ideas. We hope that having Afe and Jim Cox at Edinburgh will contribute to our decision making process and smooth organization. Please let us have your ideas especially regarding our sugges- tions in the Secretary General’s report. We hope this year we will be able to move beyond ideas into actions. I am happy to note the good efforts being made by Kathleen Wicker to get the North American mem- bership reorganized, enlarged and active! We hope that other groups especially in Afri- ca will become equally active and look forward to announcements of in-country pro- grammes in the next AASR Bulletin. I also wish to stress the need for us to have a paid up membership to support the organizational and other expenses of the Association. The Bulletin itself has seen much transformation and we note with anticipation the move towards including short articles and reviews. Our many thanks to Dr. Jan Platvoet and Prof. Matthews Ojo and for this! Jan and his team have also managed to improve our communication and image with the AASR Website at little cost to the AASR.

Abstract Employing the concepts of lifeworld (Lebenswelt) and system as primarily discussed by Edmund Husserl and Jürgen Habermas, this dissertation argues that the lifeworlds of Anglo- Indian and Goan Catholics in the Greater Toronto Area have permitted members of these communities to relatively easily understand, interact with and manoeuvre through Canada’s democratic, individualistic and market-driven system. Suggesting that the Catholic faith serves as a multi-dimensional primary lens for Canadian Goan and Anglo-Indians, this sociological ethnography explores how religion has and continues affect their identity as diasporic post- colonial communities. Modifying key elements of traditional Indian culture to reflect their Catholic beliefs, these migrants consider their faith to be the very backdrop upon which their life experiences render meaningful. Through systematic qualitative case studies, I uncover how these individuals have successfully maintained a sense of security and ethnic pride amidst the myriad cultures and religions found in Canada’s multicultural society. Oscillating between the fuzzy boundaries of the Indian traditional and North American liberal worlds, Anglo-Indians and Goans attribute their achievements to their open-minded Westernized upbringing, their traditional Indian roots and their Catholic-centred principles effectively making them, in their opinions, admirable models of accommodation to Canada’s system.

The people in the Bible are not meant to be examples for us to imitate. Only the Lord's life is our example. Notes for Parents Rebekah, Isaac's wife, came from Haran. When Abraham and his family took the long journey from their home in Dr of Chaldea to the land of Canaan, his brother Nahor started the journey with him but stopped part way at Haran, and decided to settle there. Rebekah was Nahor's granddaughter. The Jews were many times commanded not to intermarry with the people among whom they happened to live. In this way their line was kept pure. The deeper reason for the prohibition was, of course, that they might not be drawn away into other religions. Isaac and Rebekah had no children for twenty years, and then the twins Esau and Jacob were born. They were not identical twins. Esau was red and hairy-his other name Edom means "red" -while Jacob was a "smooth" man.

Such institutions gained legitimacies through royalty. Traditional institutions were and remained the only legitimate authority in most societies of Nigeria. They were revered, respected and obeyed by all. In some societies they held the power of life and death over their subjects and their courts remained the highest court in the land. In reciprocity, the traditional authorities provided the needed security and protection to the peoples. However, this old tradition of kingship faced enormous challenges arising from the growing influence of modern technology which propelled the move for contacts between the indigenous peoples in Nigeria and those branded as “super human”- the Whites. The emergence of the White Colonialist beginning from the 19th Century had ushered in a change that shook the foundation of Royal or Traditional institutions in Nigeria. This paper looks at the historical narratives of interactions between the indigenous peoples and the alien Colonialist that shook the foundation of traditional institutions among the Igala people of Central Nigeriaand sustained even by the post- colonial successive administrations in Nigeria. Introduction Traditional institutions are an aged long institution cherished, respected and carriedwith a sense of responsibilities and royal patronage. In most settlements Africa either at a micro or macro level, people findit a sense of duty to rally round someone who stands for them, be their mouthpiece and possibly defend them as the case may be.
