16 EXHIBITION: PARTNERS IN ART - PROJECTS FOR 2016-17 Seven contemporary art projects ranging from commissions to survey exhibitions of Canadian artists to bringing internationally acclaimed artists to Canada to exhibit their work

Partners in Art (PIA), the volunteer-led, charitable organization of 135 art supporters who champion promoting contemporary Canadian art, is pleased to announce the funding of seven art projects for the 2016-17 season.

Each project reflects PIA’s continued support of contemporary art in Canada. Whether it’s commissions with smaller partners, survey exhibitions of Canadian artists or the support for major American artists’ exhibitions to come to Toronto, PIA continues to support and broaden its mission. And, for the first time in PIA’s history, the organization is also supporting its own self-initiated art project, LandMarks2017/ Repères2017.

An overview of the PIA funded projects in 2016-2017 Theaster Gates at the AGO - PIA is supporting a commissioned project by the Chicago- based artist Theaster Gates currently at the AGO. Theaster Gates: How to Build a House Museum is an immersive and confrontational installation that explores notions of blackness, movement, queer culture, freedom and the history of house music, by juxtaposing objects and ideas not traditionally found in spaces of high culture to provide a radically new visitor experience. This exhibition is Gates’s largest and most extensive North American gallery presentation to date.

The Koffler Gallery - PIA is the lead sponsor for the upcoming exhibition Yonder at the Koffler Gallery. Taking place from September 21 to November 27th, 2016 the exhibition will explore themes of inter-cultural translation, displacement and identity construction, and bring together a group of Canadian artists of diverse cultural backgrounds whose works examine the immigrant condition from personal experience. Developed by Koffler Gallery curator Mona Filip in collaboration with guest curator Matthew Brower, the project expands into the broader space of Artscape Youngplace, crossing the borders of the designated gallery setting and engaging shared public areas as well as the building’s exterior.

Gallery TPW - For her first exhibition in Toronto in September 2017, American-born filmmaker and multimedia artist, Cauleen Smith will create a series of public site interventions in collaboration with local Toronto artists. Based in Chicago, Cauleen Smith is best known for her experimental works that address the African American identity, specifically the issues facing black women today.

Mercer Union – PIA has sponsored a series of commissioned solo exhibitions in collaboration with Mercer Union. The third and final commission, by Omaskêko Cree from Moose Cree First Nation artist Duane Linklater, is entitled From Our Hands. It references an exhibition of indigenous craft that toured Ontario between 1983 and 1985, including the work of Ethel Linklater, Duane’s grandmother. This installation is an intervention into given structures as the gallery walls of Mercer Union will be removed and the given spaces expanded. The exhibition takes place from September 9 to November 5 2016.

The Textile Museum of Canada - PIA is pleased to collaborate with The Textile Museum of Canada to bring the exhibition Sheila Hicks: Material Voices to Canada in October 2016. The presentation, organized jointly with the Joslyn Art Museum of Nebraska highlights leading international contemporary artist, Sheila Hicks as she speaks to global craft traditions, the history of painting and sculpture, graphic design, and architecture.

LandMarks2017/Repères2017 - PIA’s LandMarks2017/Repères2017 is a year-long, nationwide initiative that will bring together a team of nationally acclaimed curators, established Canadian contemporary artists, 16 Canadian art universities, a university curriculum involving numerous post-secondary art students, and local communities to collaboratively create works of art that will be installed in numerous Parks Canada locations from June 10-25, 2017.

Art Museum at the University of Toronto - In collaboration with the Art Museum at the University of Toronto (formerly known as the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery at Hart House / University of Toronto Art Centre), PIA sponsored an extensive survey of Toronto artists entitled Showroom, a survey exhibition of Toronto works that emerged within a period of rapid urban development of the city.

“Becoming sponsors and partners to the Canadian visual arts community is paramount to our mission at PIA,” add Joh and Morton. “As we continue to champion Canadian contemporary art and artists throughout 2016-17 our willingness to support ground breaking projects both big and small grows, and our contemporary art conversation remains active and accessible to all.”

ABOUT PARTNERS IN ART Since 2002, PIA has invested more than $1.5 million in 50+ projects while working in cooperation with 21 partners. For more information, visit Partners in Art or follow us on Twitter and Facebook.

20 EXHIBITION: MEAN TIME Morgan Wong Curated by Tyler Russell Centre A, 229 East Georgia Street To October 15, 2016 Two years ago this September, students flooded and occupied areas of Hong Kong in an expression of frustration with the ongoing deterioration of One Country, Two Systems – in particular a challenge to Beijing decreeing that authorities there would screen candidates for Hong Kong’s Chief Executive before giving Hong Kongers a chance to vote on them in 2017.

ADD OIL MACHINE 打氣機 In collaboration with Hong Kong Exile Curated by Melissa Lee and Aaron Levy Organized by Slought Foundation in collaboration with the Add Oil Team, this virtual exhibition seeks to spread awareness about the power of individual and collective assemblage and the formation of community and solidarity through art. In commemoration of the final days of protests one year earlier, the project will launch online on December 10, 2015, raising questions about archivization and historicization, and how institutions record and display protest movements and cultural resistance. Here, in Vancouver, Canada, we will be presenting it in the form of an outdoor projection and installation.

The title of the exhibition is derived from “Stand By You: Add Oil Machine 並肩上: 打氣機” a spontaneous four-month project by artists Sampson Wong (黃宇軒), Jason Lam (林志 輝) and friends that strategically projected political writing on key government buildings in Hong Kong.

22 EXHIBITION: ON @ THE VANCOUVER ART GALLERY Exhibitions: BHARTI KHER Matter Vancouver Art Gallery presents BHARTI KHER Matter, the first major retrospective in North America of internationally acclaimed artist Bharti Kher. On view from July 9 to October 10, this exhibition incorporates elements of painting, photography and sculpture that have been the hallmarks of her practice over the past two decades. Organized by the Vancouver Art Gallery and curated by Daina Augaitis (Chief Curator/Associate Director) and Diana Freundl (Associate Curator, Asian Art), this exhibition is presented as part of the Gallery’s Institute of Asian Art initiative which features historical, contemporary and emerging international and local Asian artists.

“Bharti Kher’s artworks are varied in material, sensibility and subject matter, yet are bound together by her piercing explorations into the meaning of human relationships, spirituality and femininity in today’s society. This exhibition provides a unique opportunity for the viewers to reflect on perceptions and realities of being human at the present time,” said Kathleen S. Bartels, Director of the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Kher’s most recent work Six Women (2013-15), cast from six female bodies. These figures provide not only a vivid representation of the aging female body as a counterpoint to social pressures to stay forever young, but they also serve as witnesses to the disregard for women who have obliged the patriarchy.

BHARTI KHER Matter is accompanied by a major exhibition catalogue co-published with Black Dog Publishing, featuring eight texts by the following distinguished writers: Nancy Adajania, Daina Augaitis, Rebecca M. Brown, Diana Freundl, Shanay Jhaveri, Ashok Mathur, Achal Prabhala and Prerna Singh. They expand on the literary, cultural and political interpretations of Kher’s sculptures, paintings and installations.

About The Institute of Asian Art Responding to the city’s geographic location on the eastern edge of the Pacific Rim, the Vancouver Art Gallery has been committed to presenting contemporary art of the Asia Pacific region for more than two decades. Launched in 2014, the Gallery’s Institute of Asian Art (IAA) is a comprehensive initiative committed to advancing scholarship and public appreciation of Asian art. This commitment is reflected in the major survey that explores the rigorous art of Bharti Kher.

25 EXHIBITION: ON @ ACCESS GALLERY AMÉLIE BRISSON-DARVEAU: ASCENSION to October 31, 2016

Join Access Gallery on Friday September 9th 7:00 PM for the opening reception of Amélie Brisson-Darveau's solo exhibition in conjunction with SWARM 17. Ascension temporarily transforms the gallery space into an indoor climbing gym of sorts (albeit with handpainted walls and delicate, hand-formed ceramic grips). The installation considers the popularity of artificial climbing walls in both urban Switzerland (Brisson-Darveau’s current home) and Vancouver, from playgrounds to boulders in public parks and giant indoor climbing centres (which often mimic famous climbing routes in the Alps and the Rockies). Here Brisson-Darveau, whose practice is persistently interested in tracing movements of the body in relation to its natural and built environment, engages the play of structure and texture as a crucial relay between different geographies, bodily capacities, nature and culture.

THE FORESHORE A collaborative pursuit and shared space between Access Gallery and Other Sights for Artists’ Projects, generating questions, confluence, and aggregation inspired by the conditions of the foreshore.

Launching Friday, September 9, 2016, 7:00-10:00 PM in conjunction with #SWARM17 222 East Georgia Street Vancouver, BC The Foreshore is a year-long collaboration between Access Gallery and Other Sights’ for Artist Projects inspired by the deep influence of the waterways on our cities and societies on the West Coast. The storefront next to Access’ gallery space at 222 East Georgia will be activated by a series of open sessions, screenings, work-ins, mini-artist residencies, and open studios. We are motivated by our organizations’ intersecting concerns, and by the increased potential for artists and audiences in joining forces.

The “foreshore” describes the land along the edge of the water that is both submerged and revealed by the tide. Very simply, it is the wet part of the beach. The foreshore is a place of unclear jurisdiction, and thus of contestation, friction, and constant movement. Those who dwell in this zone must continually adapt to a changing environment. The foreshore also conjures histories specific to this region: narratives of trade and exchange, habitation and nourishment, resistance and violent erasure. It might similarly evoke our contemporary lived situation in this place. Considering the potential of this zone as both concept and site, The Foreshore initiative asks the following: how do we generate conditions of emergence? How can we take up space differently? How do we support unruly practices and futures?

Visit theforeshore.org for an unfolding schedule of events.

59 EXHIBITION: CALL | XPACE CULTURAL CENTRE | WHERE IS HOME? DEADLINE: October 15, 2016, 11:59pm.

Xpace Cultural Centre is seeking work from emerging and/or student designers and artists for an exhibition that interrogates the ways in which contemporary design and art can be used as a tool to depict the concept of home. Curated by Zviko Mhakayakora, the exhibition will run from January 6 - February 4, 2017 and will be included in the Toronto Design Offsite Festival 2017.

This exhibition seeks to explore the different ways through which the concept of home is formed when immigration and other factors are considered. Home, then becomes a term that shifts depending on the person who is defining it at that moment.

The overarching purpose of this exhibition is to open our minds up to the idea that home may mean different things to different people. Colonization has played a large part on the ways in which we view home. How can contemporary design and art be used as a tool for reclamation and decolonization of the concept of home?

Works must be ready for exhibition by January 1, 2017. Selected artists will be notified in November 2016. All selected participants will be paid a project fee for the exhibition. For full info and to submit online, please visit: http://www.xpace.info/call-for-submissions-where-is-home/

60 EXHIBITION: BLACK CAT ARTSPACE | SALON OF INCLUSIVENESS 2016, HOLIDAY SHOW + SALE Exhibition runs from November 17th -December 31st 2016 SUBMISSION DEADLINE: October 23rd, 2016

Back for the third year now, our biggest and most inclusive group show of the year! ATTENTION ARTISTS - WORKING IN ALL MEDIUMS, CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS The Black Cat's 3rd annual, Salon of Inclusiveness

To celebrate the end of the year, we are using the fundamental idea of crowdsourcing to bring together a large and inclusive group show. No medium or work will be rejected from this show, the only requirement is that it can be hung on our gallery walls, sized no more than 4 and a half feet in width or height, and maximum 2x artworks by any one artist.

Photos from last years show: https://www.facebook.com/TheBlackCatTO/photos/?tab=album&album_id=5236731011 35499 https://www.facebook.com/TheBlackCatTO/photos/?tab=album&album_id=5239373411 09075

As an alternative space, Black Cat Artspace doesn't have to answer to any particular set of aesthetics or rules, and as a result has seen a wide variety of shows, in a wide variety of mediums grace the walls over the past three and a half years.

The Salon of Inclusiveness, is a play and positive take on the Salon des Refuss:

"In 1863 two-thirds of paintings presented at the Paris Salon were refused, including the works of Courbet, douard Manet, Camille Pissaro and Johan Jongkind. The works which didn't align with the Emperor's traditional tastes we're upon protest shown in another part of the palace as the "Salon des Refuss." The critical attention served to legitimize the emerging avant-garde in painting."

Due to the popularity of the show last year we will be hosting THREE Opening reception(s): November 17th/18th 2016 - 7pm - 10:30pm November 25th, 2016 - 7pm - 10:30pm Near the beginning of each opening there will be time for a friendly and informal critique where anyone showing can explain their work and others will have a chance to offer a critique or ask questions.

Exhibition runs from November 17th -December 31st 2016 Gallery hours: Wednesday - Saturday: 2-7pm Monday-Tuesday: Closed

We've determined a safe estimate of the usable wall space of hanging a show salon style in the space, allowing for varying sizes and shapes and have determined a set hanging fee of $25.00 per 12 inch x 12 inch square, last year some people submitted too many works so there is a limit of a maximum of 2 works per artist and no work can be over 4 and a half feet in width or height.

Submit: http://submit.theblackcat.to/ And like every show we host the work can be for sale, commission free!

73 PUBLIC ART- DESIGN COMPETITION: CALL FOR PROPOSALS FOR WINTERSTATIONS 2017, Toronto Deadline for submissions is November 4, 2016.

Brief WinterStations is now embarking on its third-year, opening an international design competition to bring temporary public art installations to The Beaches, exhibited to celebrate Toronto's winter waterfront landscape.

This year we are expecting to include up to six lifeguard stands, including an additional three by invited universities, across Balmy, Kew and Ashbridges Bay beaches located in the heart of the Beach community, south of Queen Street East, between Woodbine and Victoria Park Avenues. These utilitarian structures are to be used as the armature for temporary installations, which will need to be able to withstand the rigours of Toronto winter weather. The exhibition is to run February 20 until March 27, 2017.

This is a single-stage open international competition, welcoming artists, designers, architects and landscape architects to submit concept proposals for WinterStations' temporary artwork installations.

Theme WinterStations 2017 theme: Catalyst : Converting one form or substance into another.

The finger that tips the first domino over. The flap of butterfly's wing that that sets off a chain of chaotic, unpredictable reactions. The theme for WinterStations’ third year is Catalyst. In 2017, this seems especially fitting in a time of an international political, social and cultural search for a better way forward. This winter, we ask artists and designers to unearth and intervene in such a way as to open up the landscape, as well as the minds of those who come to view and interact with the installations. We ask that proposals seek to disassemble and re-shape our notions of Toronto’s waterfront, with particular attention to the sand and materials strewn across the beach.

The installations this year will also be a catalyst for change: We would like to see less waste and more re-use. Designers should consider how their materials can be repurposed and recycled; we are excited to see proposals that evolve into future iterations, as on-going research and design projects. Entrants should address in their proposals a post-WinterStations’ life, including de-commissioning / removal and the potential opportunities they see for their design, such as possible new sites and / or new objects.

There is no limit to the size of the installation, but please note that included in the jurors’ instructions will be durability and constructability. Installations cannot exceed the total cost outlined.

The jury may choose to pick up to ten proposals, in order of choice. The WinterStations team will review these proposals to determine constructability. From this list we are fundraising to build up to six installations.

Winning teams will be provided with an allowance for travel and accommodation to spend time in Toronto during the installation and the activities surrounding the opening, February 17 - 20, 2017. In 2016, this included an opening party at The Gladstone Hotel. These events provide opportunities for citizens of Toronto to engage directly with the designers. Members of the design team should expect to meet with media to discuss their designs and ideas.

This year, local design and art institutions will be represented by The University of Toronto Daniels Faculty of Architecture Landscape and Design, Humber College School of Design and the University of Waterloo School of Architecture, with teams of students designing and fabricating installations for three stands.

The Lifeguard Stands The lifeguard stands are essentially identical. They are sturdy steel pipe structures to which the installation is to be fastened. The method of fastening is up to each competitor, however it may not result in any damage to or modification of the structure. As this is the off-season for use, there are few restrictions on covering the stations; the three exceptions are: the shepherds’ hook, the lifesaving ring and any emergency signage.

Please assume minimal security during the event and the possibility of vandalism or simply wear and tear from the curious. There will be no power or utilities available. Proposals should indicate how materials may be disposed of or recycled at the end of the display period. Please designate on your entry if your design is specific to one particular station.

Selection and Approval Process Once the Jury has met and determined a short list of entrants, a technical review of the finalists will be conducted in order to ensure the constructability of the projects. Those on the shortlist will be assigned a construction team lead by a project manager, chosen by the organizers to produce the appropriate working drawings in order to ensure that the construction is feasible and within budget. This collaboration will take place from December 2016 through to installation. The final winners will be announced January 8, 2016.

All construction will be carried out in Toronto by firms selected by the organizers and overseen by the entrant, the project manager and the construction team. The entrants chosen to participate in this competition agree to work to the schedule established by the organizers.

Competition Rules, Regulations and Submission Requirements A design honorarium of $3,500.00 CAD will be paid to selected proposals.

For all competition rules, regulations and submission requirements please visit: http://winterstations.com/ Contact: [email protected]

Other pending projects for 2017 and 2018 are a little online shop called “Le Dep” and a yearly publication with a mix of visual and text based projects by some of our residents.

We look forward to your applications, if you have any questions we invite you to contact us at [email protected].

78 RESIDENCY: OCAD UNIVERSITY - DRAWING AND PAINTING DIGITAL PAINTING ATELIER – CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Artists are invited to submit proposals to the Digital Painting Atelier. Artists are selected through a juried process. This opportunity provides an artist with one-week access to technology and technical support offered through the Digital Drawing and Painting Lab for creative experimentation and expansion of their practice. The artist will produce a new and original edition of artwork/digital prints and interact with the community of the Drawing and Painting program. The artwork produced during the residency will benefit both the visiting artist and the Drawing and Painting program. The artist maintains majority ownership through a 60/40 split of a minimum edition of 5 prints. The Faculty of Art will exhibit, auction and archive the remaining 40% of the edition. This in turn offsets the cost of running the Digital Painting Atelier and helps to raise funds for other initiatives in the Faculty of Art.

OCAD University students will have an opportunity to interact with the artist in residence as well as assist in the development of the artist’s project. The visiting artist will be expected to lecture on their work, conduct informal presentations, critiques and/or workshops with students and faculty. Moreover, the artist will be entitled to an honorarium as well as travel expenses and accommodations (when applicable) during the residency. Please see the application form for more details.

“My residency at the Digital Painting Atelier at OCAD was fantastic. It is a rare experience to be given space and time to work, as well as the equipment you need, material and financial support, and the opportunity to engage with an exciting and welcoming art school community. I came to Toronto with a project in mind, and everyone at OCAD did everything they could to make sure I was in a position to make the work and leave with a finished edition of professional prints, which I did. But I also was offered such amazing hospitality, including getting shown around Toronto's galleries, taken to the museum, and the chance to get to know some really wonderful faculty, staff, and students. And of course, it was great to give a talk about my work and to meet one-on-one with many students to give feedback about theirs. I've applied to and done many residences, and the Digital Painting Atelier is very unique — those of us working with digital painting and digital drawing should be grateful it exists.” Leah Beeferman – Artist (New York), DPA participant 2013
