“The West” in the Eyes of the Iranian Intellectuals of the Interwar Years (1919–1939) Mehrzad Boroujerdi n 1929, after a lecture by Arnold Toynbee (from the notes of Denison Ross, the fi rst director of the School of Oriental and African Studies) on the subject of the modern- ization of the Middle East, a commentator said, Persia has not been modernized and has not in reality been Westernized. Look at the map: there is Persia right up against Russia. For the past hundred years, living cheek by jowl with Russia, Persia has maintained her complete independence of Russian thought. Although sixty to seventy percent of her trade for the past hundred years has been with Russia, Persia remains aloof in spirit and in practice. For the past ten years, Persia has been living alongside the Union of Socialist Soviet Republics, and has remained free from any impregnation by their basic ideas. Her freedom is due to her cultural independence. For the safety of Persia it is essential, if she is to continue to develop on her own lines, that she should not attempt modernization, and I do not think that the attempt is being made. It is true that the Persians have adopted motor-cars and in small way railways. But let us remember that the Persians have always been in the forefront in anything of that sort. The fi rst Eastern nation to enter the Postal Union and to adopt a system of telegraphs was Persia, which country was also among the fi rst of the Eastern nations to join the League of Nations and to become an active member. -

[email protected] Received: 28/02/2019 Accepted: 02/09/2019 Abstract To seek the intellectual roots of the Iranian constitutionalism, one has to be back to the pre- constitutionalism epoch. Indeed, in that time, Iranian elites had recognized the "deterioration" as the main crisis of Iran, which was rooted in the problem of “despotism.” Their strategy to overcome this crisis was the “Law.”However, the key point was that the majority of intellectual elites had thoughtcodifying the law is the only job that has to be done. Nevertheless, they did not pay attention to the mechanism of how to move from traditional legal logic to the new one in Iran. In the Iranian Tanzimat period, considering the two concepts of law in the European lands (the political and the rational concepts), the idea of law seems to base on the rational concept. In that time, debates were on the explanation, justification, and interpretation of the law. All the utterances were about: which law is the right one? What is the proper criterion to pass a legal regulation? Must the law be written based on nature, the tradition, the practices, or the divine Sharia? This article is going to assess the represented hypothesis by investigating some works of intellectual elites and historical documents of Iranian pre-constitutionalism. -

They have used the specifications and principles of romanticism due to the conditions and outlook of the addressees (children and adolescents).The current essay scrutinizes the characteristics of romanticism in the adolescents and children poem. Romanticism considers identifications such as naturalism, rustic are tendencies, liberalism, nostalgic issues, individualism and tendency to traveling. It also tries to explore new interpretations. -

Francophonie, i.e., the use of the French language and culture outside of France, has followed a winding path throughout several centuries in Persia (Iran). It grew from the interest of the Persian elite in a French society that neither engaged Persia militarily, nor attempted to compete with other European powers doing so. France's apparent lack of political interest in Persia became an official French diplomatic policy of "désintéressement," or "disinterest." This "hands off" policy nourished a Persian/Iranian fascination with French culture during the 19th and 20th centuries, as France was seen as a potential ally against the growing menace of Russia and Great Britain. As a result, and despite the growing political influence of other Western powers in Persia/Iran, the French language enjoyed the privileged status of first foreign Western language in Persia/Iran for almost a century, before being replaced by the English language due to the entry of the United States onto the international stage after the Second World War. -

Political Satire, the Barometer of Press Freedom: A Review of Political Satire in the Iranian Press during the 2000s Seyed Mahmood Farjami* Abstract: Political satire has played a prominent part in the social and political sphere of journalism in Iran from the first appearance of the independent press at the beginning of the twentieth century. This paper examines its problems and achievements in the Iranian press during the first decade of the twenty-first century, including their historical context over the past one hundred years. Legal and other important issues issues (e.g. Press Laws) affecting the Iranian press are reviewed in addition to non-political forms of the genre of satire, which significantly have often been used for political ends by authorities in Iran. The sociopolitical poems of constitutional era bear no exception as well. One of salient characteristics of the Constitutional era poems is “theme-orientation” which mingle with novel words is specific to the modernity and evolution period. The sonnet in constitutional era reminiscents great and efficacious poetic figures such as Abo-al Ghasem Lahouti. He is known a famous poet from two aspects: worker poems and literal breaking. Though, most of Lahouti’s fame belongs to his ability in worker poetry. He, indeed, for the first time introduced a libertarian, political activist and rebellion figure of workers. After leaving Iran, Lahouti dwelled in Tajikistan and Soviet Union for a long time and was being always respected by people and the states. He was not only a political activist but also regarded as a powerful and popular poet. INTRODUCTION History of constitutional era talks about those men and women who were active in fight between evil and goodness, did wrong and being oppressed and finally left signs of victories and deafest behind. BIGDELI Generally speaking, men are influenced by books which clarify their own thought, which express their own notions well, or which suggest to them ideas which their minds are already predisposed to accept. Carl Becker1 I. INTRODUCTION Long before the birth of the contemporary human-rights discourse, the ‗rights of man‘ found an interesting fate in the nineteenth century. On the one hand, natural rights doctrine was propagated through the French Revolution 1789, which despite its controversial aftermath, continued to inspire the ‗global intellectuals‘2 in many parts of the world. At the theoretical level on the other hand, as the process of secularization of natural law was completed by the late eighteenth century, the philosophical foundations of Lockean rights doctrine were put into serious doubt by all sides of the philosophical spectrum, from Bentham to Marx. Bentham wrote a harsh critique on the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen 1789 and described the underlying principle of equality claimed in the Declaration to be a natural right as ―absurd and miserable nonsense!‖ The critique of natural rights was not confined to utilitarian or legal positivist theories which flourished in the nineteenth century but it also came from Karl Marx, whose early works On the Jewish Question similarly contains a comprehensive critique of the French Declaration and its underlying individualism. Muslim intellectuals of the nineteenth century were mostly political activists, rather than theorists, to whom the idea of the ‗rights of man‘ had particular appeal. -

"I saw myself released": The Impact of Modernization on Women's Literature in Pre-Revolution Iran, 1941-1979 By: Nasim Mogharab Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the MA degree in History University of Ottawa © Nasim Mogharab, Ottawa, Canada 2016 Abstract This thesis examines the first collections of modern Persian literature written by Iranian female authors in the context of a process of gender modernization during the Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi’s reign (1941-1979). This thesis argues that women’s literature written during the period of transition from tradition to modernity is clearly influenced by the state’s gender policy and illustrates the changing position of women’s status in private and public life. Indeed, an examination of the collections of short stories and poems that were produced in this period demonstrates that female authors were concerned with the unveiling policy, arranged marriage and polygamy, women’s education, women’s social participation, women’s domestic obligations, women’s political awakening, and female sexuality. Furthermore, central themes covered by female authors changed significantly based on the transformations of gender politics the society experienced from the 1940s and 1950s to the 1960s and 1970s. Résumé La thèse porte sur la première collection de la littérature moderne persane écrite par les écrivaines iraniennes dans un contexte féministe pendant le règne du Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi (1941-1979). L’étude montre que cette littérature durant la période de la transition de la tradition à la modernité est évidemment influencée par la politique du régime Pahlavi et illustre la position changeante des femmes dans la vie privée aussi que publique.
