ASRC (Academic, Sports and Recreation Complex)

The 145,000-square foot Academic, Sports and Recreation Complex celebrated its 20th anniversary during the 2019-20 academic year and ATHLETIC FACILITIES remains one of the nation’s top NCAA Division II multi-purpose athletic facilities. The 1,200-seat arena serves as the home of West Liberty’s men’s and women’s basketball, , , and acrobatics & tumbling teams and has been selected to host multiple NCAA Division II regional championship events for wrestling and men’s basketball over the past two decades. With three Mondo surface basketball courts, a 160-meter indoor track, a well-equipped fitness center, a conference center, full athletic West Family Stadium training facilities, administrative offices and numerous classrooms, the facility is a hub of campus activity throughout the year. Renamed in 2014 to honor the generosity of WLU alumni Gary and Flip West, a brand-new MondoTurf playing surface installed in 2019 is merely the latest in a series of recent upgrades that have transformed West Liberty’s football home into an NCAA Division II showcase. The new turf follows hot on the heels of the installation of new grandstand seating and a press box upgrade and expansion to provide full radio/ TV broadcast capability along with wireless internet service for all working media. West Family Stadium’s impressive lighting system along with the enhanced landscaping and design elements have all worked together to make the 4,000-seat facility one of the region’s elite gridiron venues and a popular choice for the Mountain East Conference’s “Thursday Night Lights” television package.

West Family Athletic Complex

Fueled by another generous gift from Gary and Flip West, the West Family Athletic Complex made a smashing debut in 2019 as the state-of-the-art home for WLU’s men’s and women’s soccer, track and cross-country squads. Featuring a fully-lighted artificial turf soccer field surrounded by a full 8-lane all-weather track built to NCAA specifications, the sparkling green jewel immediately took its place among the top multi-purpose facilities in the region. With the addition of the West Family Athletic Complex, the Hilltopper track teams can now practice and host meets on campus for the first time in school history. It also allowed the soccer teams to give their student-athletes more time in the classroom by scheduling select contests at night.

Although Cooper returns a core of three senior starters backed by multiple returning letter-winners and several impressive newcomers, graduation exercises hit the Lady Hilltoppers hard with the loss of their two leading scorers in Morgan Brunner (17.2 ppg.) and Taylor Johnson (17.1 ppg.). Brunner led the nation in 3-point field goals each of the past two seasons and was the top foul shooter in the NCAA last winter, setting a school and MEC record at better than 96 percent. Johnson joined Brunner in the 1,000-point club for her career while earning her second straight All-MEC berth. “We’re not going to just show up and replace the impact of those two players,” Cooper said, “but we can do it collectively. With a deeper talent pool, we have the pieces in place to provide more balanced scoring. The question is how quickly we can bring that together as a group. That’s where the late start works to our favor.”

202021 If the West Liberty women’s basketball team can handle the on-court challenges as well as they have handled the off-court ones this year, the Lady Hilltoppers should be primed for a successful season. Head coach Kyle Cooper, who carries a 46-43 record into his fourth season at the helm, said he and his staff have been working hard for months to help guide their squad through the multiple changes forced upon all of us by the coronavirus epidemic. Cooper said the players’ response to the approach and the maturity SEASON they displayed in dealing with the adversity has carried over into preparations for what now looks to be a belated and foreshortened 2020-21 season. “I’m so proud of our young women for the way they trusted us as a staff and bought into everything we were doing,” Cooper said following an October workout. “When everybody got sent home in March, we told them we were going to focus as a program on things we can control while bringing a quality approach to the times we were able to get together and that’s just what we did. “There’s still some uncertainty. We don’t have a schedule yet. We won’t play as many games and the season won’t start until January PREVIEW but this group is determined to turn what might be perceived as a negative into a positive.”

KYLE COOPER HEAD COACH

Kyle Cooper is relying on a strong recruiting class and a solid returning nucleus to lift the West Liberty University women’s basketball program back into conference and regional contention as he heads into his fourth season at the helm. Cooper’s Lady Hilltoppers are coming off an up-and-down 2020 campaign following their NCAA Division II Tournament run the year before but there were plenty of bright spots for WLU fans to savor. The West Liberty women once again made at least one 3-pointer in every game. That streak of 802 consecutive games with a 3-pointer extends back more than a quarter-century to the 1993-94 season and is an NCAA women’s basketball record for all divisions. Senior guard Morgan Brunner led the nation in 3-point field goals (111) for the second straight season and also ranked No. 1 nationally in free throw percentage (96.2%) – the second-highest in NCAA Division II history. Cooper, who carries a 46-43 record into his fourth season, and his WLU women are only a year removed from a 21-win season capped by an NCAA Tournament bid that saw the tradition-laden program return to the regional rankings following a brief hiatus after a run to the 2016 Sweet 16. The 21-10 record was the Lady Hilltoppers’ 16th 20-win season in the past 20 years and came against one of the most challenging schedules in the nation. Eight of the 10 losses came against regionally- or nationally-ranked foes. Senior center Marissa Brown was a first-team All-American for the second straight year, Brunner led the nation in 3-pointers while ranking among the Top 10 in 3-point percentage and sophomore guard Audrey Tingle once again placed among the Top 10 nationally in assists. As a team, the Black and Gold ranked among the Top 10 nationally in 11 statistical categories – highlighted by No. 2 rankings in 3FGs, Assists and Blocked Shots while their 85.1 ppg. scoring average was third nationwide. Cooper is no stranger to sideline success. After four years as lead assistant for the WLU women under legendary head coach Lynn Ullom, Cooper took the reins when Ullom stepped down to accept the role of full-time athletic director. West Liberty went 82-45 (.646) during Cooper’s four years as an assistant with three 20-win seasons. Back-to-back MEC titles in 2015 and 2016 highlighted that run. The aforementioned 2016 squad set a school record by going 29-5 and spent the entire season ranked in the USA Today coaches’ Top 25, finishing at No. 18 after the first “Sweet 16” run in school history. Cooper caught the coaching bug during his days as a student at West Virginia University. He served as assistant head manager and basketball camp counselor for Coach John Beilein’s Elite 8 and Sweet 16 NCAA Tournament men’s basketball teams during Cooper’s first two years at WVU (2005-06). The Waterford, Pa. native spent the next four years (2007-10) as head student manager and graduate assistant for Coach Mike Carey with the WVU women’s basketball team. The WVU women advanced to post-season play all four years, earning three trips to the NCAA The Tournament and a WNIT berth. Cooper left Morgantown in 2010 to serve as Director of Women’s Basketball Operations for head coach Semeka Randall at Ohio University. He spent one season with the Lady Bobcats before accepting an assistant coaching position at Wheeling Jesuit and came to West Liberty after two years at WJU. Cooper graduated summa cum laude from WVU in 2008 with dual bachelor’s degrees in Sport Management and Athletic Coaching Education along with a minor in Business Administration. He earned a master’s degree from WVU in Educational Leadership with a focus on Higher Education in 2010. Kyle and his wife, Katie, are a West Liberty family as Katie is the COACHES university’s Director of Financial Aid. They live in Wellsburg, W.Va. with their children, Brody and Cali.
