Yannis Tsarouchis Painting, Comments, Yannis Tsarouchis Foundation, Athens 1990, no. 48, p. iv (discussed). A work that marks a turning point in Tsarouchis’s career, as noted by the artist himself,1 Woman from Salamis conveys a striking immediacy and resilient allure. Broad planes of earthy colours highlighted by solid outlines and supplemented by highly stylised motifs, such as the clouds and the sun, build up a solid edifice of pure form, stretching beyond the confines of the transient and perfectly matching the young maiden’s silent inflexibility and hieratic posture. We are reminded of Byzantine icons, Fayum portraits, Theofilos, and Kontoglou, the leading advocate for the revival of the Byzantine pictorial tradition, under whom Tsarouchis apprenticed for four years. As noted by former Benaki Museum Director M. Hadjidakis, in Tsarouchis’s hands, human form takes on a monumental quality. Lightly modelled, his subjects fill the picture and are elevated to a symbolic type full of dignity and grandeur,2 capturing the genuineness of character which is the lifeblood of the Modern Greek spirit. Ever since his early childhood, Tsarouchis was enchanted by traditional local costumes from around Greece. His fascination was further heightened following his acquaintance with Angeliki Hadjimichali, Elli Papadimitriou and Eva Palmer- Sikelianou and was filtered through Kontoglou’s passion for Byzantine art. He was not only interested in the art form but also in the techniques involved. He knew how to weave, cut and sew, as well as take patterns from folk clothing.

  • Transplanting Surrealism in Greece- a Scandal Or Not?
International Journal of Social and Educational Innovation (IJSEIro) Volume 2 / Issue 3/ 2015 Transplanting Surrealism in Greece- a Scandal or Not? NIKA Maklena University of Tirana, Albania E-mail: [email protected] Received 26.01.2015; Accepted 10.02. 2015 Abstract Transplanting the surrealist movement and literature in Greece and feedback from the critics and philological and journalistic circles of the time is of special importance in the history of Modern Greek Literature. The Greek critics and readers who were used to a traditional, patriotic and strictly rule-conforming literature would find it hard to accept such a kind of literature. The modern Greek surrealist writers, in close cooperation mainly with French surrealist writers, would be subject to harsh criticism for their surrealist, absurd, weird and abstract productivity. All this reaction against the transplanting of surrealism in Greece caused the so called “surrealist scandal”, one of the biggest scandals in Greek letters. Keywords: Surrealism, Modern Greek Literature, criticism, surrealist scandal, transplanting, Greek letters 1. Introduction When Andre Breton published the First Surrealist Manifest in 1924, Greece had started to produce the first modern works of its literature. Everything modern arrives late in Greece due to a number of internal factors (poetic collection of Giorgios Seferis “Mythistorima” (1935) is considered as the first modern work in Greek literature according to Αlexandros Argyriou, History of Greek Literature and its perception over years between two World Wars (1918-1940), volume Α, Kastanioti Publications, Athens 2002, pp. 534-535). Yet, on the other hand Greek writers continued to strongly embrace the new modern spirit prevailing all over Europe.

  • Art and Ideology in Modern Greece
ART AND IDEOLOGY IN MODERN GREECE I awoke with this marble head in my hands which makes my elbows ache and I don’t know where to set it down. It was falling into the dream as I was coming out of the dream and thus our lives were joined and it will be very hard to separate them. George Seferis From Mυθιστόρημα Γ’ Hellenism awoke from the long lethargy of Turkish enslavement with a marble head in its hands. A marble head that did not belong to a genuine ancient statue. Was it meant to be ancient or neoclassical? It was simply a fake. We did not choose it in full awareness, we did not love it. Foreigners merely placed it in our hands. And it still makes our elbows ache. The lines of George Seferis acquire a sudden dramatic urgency when they are linked to the historical fortunes of Greece. The quest for a past that could be used as a historical and ideological support in the new state, appeared to be one of the most pressing concerns for this fledgling kingdom. This choice did not express, could not express the free volition of the Greeks. It was imposed by historical circumstances. The quest for models in the past presupposes a people with some political maturity. A people that looks to the past for its models of rejuvenation. Its choices must be dictated by the needs of the present and the future. Only then is a dialogue with instructive models productive and fruitful. Greeks belonged to a typical traditional society and emerged bloodied by a long period of servitude and an unfair struggle.

Great Narratives of the Past. Traditions and Revisions in National Museums Conference proceedings from EuNaMus, European National Museums: Identity Politics, the Uses of the Past and the European Citizen, Paris 29 June – 1 July & 25-26 November 2011. Dominique Poulot, Felicity Bodenstein & José María Lanzarote Guiral (eds) EuNaMus Report No 4. Published by Linköping University Electronic Press: http://www.ep.liu.se/ecp_home/index.en.aspx?issue=078 © The Author. Greek Modernism: A National Scenario. Experiences and Ideological Trajectories Annie Malama National Gallery – Alexandros Soutzos Museum Abstract This paper aspires to comment on the idea of suggesting an alternative scenario concerning the national narrative about Modern Greek Art, in the context of the curatorial approach I personally followed for the exhibition Versions of Greek modernism: experiences and ideological trajectories (actually one of the sections of a broader temporary exhibitional project, entitled Unknown Treasures from the National Gallery Collections, that took place in the National Gallery-Alexandros Soutzos Museum in Athens from October 2011 to January 2012). Choosing the works for this particular section I was responsible for, was a great opportunity to challenge the certainties of linear presentation adopted in the permanent exhibition of the museum and the rather outdated historiographical scheme it is based on. More specifically, instead of continuing the reproduction of long perpetuated stereotypes, motivated by a sometimes compulsive need to showcase masterpieces, to demonstrate an unbroken continuity in space and time, exclusively based on superficial formal comparison of the output of the Greek visual arts production and its international counterparts, I suggest it is about time that we enrich the issues posed and focus on broader cultural, historical contexts.

  • Nikos Engonopoulos (Νίκος Εγγονόπουλος) Nikos
Nikos Engonopoulos (Νίκος Εγγονόπουλος) Nikos Engonopoulos (1907-1985) was a poet and painter and one of the leading exponents of surreal movement in Greece. He was surreally characterized as "the harsh rock of Elbasan1 and the soft green lace of the Bosporus by Andreas Empeirikos2. He was known at second world war period for his surrealistic poetry and for the surprising and unexpected associations and vivid colors, in his paintings. During his teenage years he traveled to Paris, where he finished high school. He studied painting, he fought in the Albanian Front, was captured by the Germans and held in a labor camp, escaped and managed to arrive in Athens, after, as he said, "thrashing away more than half of Greece on foot". He taught painting as a professor at the School of Architecture at NTUA (National Technical University of Athens). He was involved in poetry, painting and stage design. From 1939 till 1983, Engonopoulos participated in many team and personal exhibitions in Greece and abroad. He also produced sceneries for plays. The artist himself stated in his autobiography: “Fortunately I studied here (he means in Athens) at the School of Fine Arts…A place that benefited me in many ways and I owe deep gratitude to it”. Engonopoulos is inspired by the ancient Greek tradition and additionally by the byzantine tradition. Therefore, we can see in his paintings heroes of the Greek mythology and figures of the Greek history. He does not try, however, the so- called “return to roots”, like most artists of his generation. He doesn’t approach mythology neither with lust to ancient times nor with nostalgia, but as equal to 1.

Modern Greek culture has also been influenced by: • The Latin and Frankish states • The Ottoman Empire • The Venetian Republic • The Genoese Republic • The British Empire Historians credit the Greek War of Independence with revitalising Greece and giving birth to a single entity of its multi-faceted culture.
