Department of Plant Ecology, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Life, University of Sétif, Setif 19000, Algeria Abstract: On the high plains of Setif, the old inhabitants have built a real knowledge of medicinal plants properties. Traditional knowledge about plants and their properties are still fairly common. Our scientific motivation stems from the absence of any flora and ethnobotanical study in this area. During different field campaigns, we identified 93 medicinal species belonging to 32 botanical families. This number reflects the wealth of medicinal plants that are still traditionally used. To gather as much information on the use of plants, a series of ethnobotanical surveys were conducted in the field during periods of picking from villagers, herbalists and traditional healers. According to those surveyed, the fresh leaves and seeds are considered the most popular and common parts that can address several diseases where oral and dermal administration are recommended. The most used plants are: Artemisia herba-alba, Argyrolobium saharae, Gymnosporia senegalensis, Ormenis africana, Pallenis spinosa, Thymus ciliatus, Pistacia atlantica, Paronychia arabica, Globularia alypum, Ajuga iva, Peganum harmala, Ruta chalepensis, Tapsia garganica, Pituranthos scoparius. Djebel Zdimm offers floristic diversity and a sizeable traditional therapeutic knowledge. The safeguarding and preservation of this ancestral heritage is one of our objectives in this semi-arid steppe. -

Accepted 22 October, 2009 For years, ecologists who have been trying to understand the relationship between the organisms with each other and/or their environments, have carried out their researches sometimes far from civilization, sometimes on a desolate island or in a tropical rainforest. Today, about half of the world’s population lives in urban areas. Therefore, most of the ecological problems have been brought to these areas. Nevertheless, in cities, preserving and maintaining natural habitats, providing a place not only to live but also to enjoy and to relax, are possible only by applying the principles and concepts of urban ecology in planning. This study presents the outcomes of unplanned urbanization and possible preventive measures, which could be taken in the Kartal District, Istanbul-Turkey. Moreover, in this study, different kinds of urban habitats within the frontiers of Kartal were described and an inventorial study containing native, exotic and cultivated plant taxa were realized. For this plant inventory of the Kartal District, all the greenery in the area were explored in different seasons. Plant samples were collected, dried, labelled and then determined according to standard herbarium procedures. -

This study aims to predict the impact of bioclimatic variables in current and future climatic scenarios on the distribution of Inuleae tribe species. Modeling the distribution of 30 species of the Inuleae tribe in Algeria was carried out with a maximum entropy model. Two models with 99 occurrence points were obtained with mean values of Area Under a Curve (AUC) of 0.987±0.01 and 0.971±0.02, reflecting excellent predictive power. Three bioclimatic variables contributed mainly to the first model and four - to the second one with cumulative contributions of 83.8% and 79%, respectively elucidating differences between species of the two major climatic zones in Algeria: the Tell and the Sahara. Two-dimensional niches of Algerian Inuleae species allowed to distinguish these two groups with the distribution of 18 Tell species, characterized by high rainfall (14-18°C, 400-1000 mm) and the other 12 species – distributed in hot and dry environments (17-24°C, 20-200 mm). Modeling the distribution under future conditions showed that habitats of the Saharan region would be much less suitable for these species with a variation in the annual mean temperature increase up to 20% and a decrease in annual precipitation, which could raise to 11 and 15%. -

Whereas some species exhibit rather trivial flavonoids, others produce rare compounds. Spectral data of rare flavonoids are reported and their structural identification is discussed. 6-Oxygenation of flavonols is a common feature of two Inula species and Pulicaria sicula. By contrast, flavonoids with 8-oxygenation, but lacking 6-oxygenation, are common in two out of three Gnaphalieae species examined. In addition, B-ring deoxyflavonoids are abundantly present in the leaf exudates of Helichrysum italicum (Gnaphalieae). These distinctive features of the two Asteraceae tribes are in agreement with previous flavonoid surveys of these and related taxa. [email protected] Abstract: The present study was carried out during 2010 to 2011 to determine the important plants of in Jarjar oma in Al- Jabal Al- Akhdar-Libya, which includes about 179 species belonging to 51 families and 144 genera. They are represented by 75 perennial, 101 annual and 3 biennial species. Most characteristic families are Asteraceae containing 28 species, the dominance of Asteraceae indicates the range deterioration and dominance of unpalatable species. Fabaceae represented by 22 species, Poaceae including 18 species, Asparagaceae by 7 species, Brassicaceae by 6 species, Caryophyllaceae by 6 species, Euphorbiaceae by 6 species saline and rocky. Apiaceae, Lamiaceae and Polygonaceae including 5 species. Noticed that 56.2 % of species was annuals and 42.1 % was perennials and 1.7 % was biennials. Whereas autumn and summer increase perennials to reach 100 % more than spring and winter wherein increase annuals species to attain 55 %, to display disappear biennial in autumn and summer seasons in all habitat except rocky habitat in autumn. Out of the surveyed, Kinds of Forbs gave 109 species followed shrubs by 38 species, Grass 26 species, Trees 6 species. Of the most dominant species was broad-leaved (Forbs) plant species found in the region. According to palatability 107 species were palatable and 72 species were unpalatable. For annuals, 61 species were palatable and 40 species were unpalatable, while perennial, 44 species were palatable and 31 species were unpalatable. -

The vascular plants (plus one alga) collected during Iter Mediterraneum XII of OPTIMA in North Tunisia have been studied. In all, 1374 gatherings were made from 43 localities in the “Cap Bon” region, “Dorsale Tunisienne”, “Tunisie du Nord-Est”, “Vallée de la Medjedah”, “Mogods” and “Kroumirie” areas. They belong to 82 families and 539 species or subspecies. Three taxa are new for the flora of Tunisia (Cerastium diffusum subsp. gussonei, Senecio leucanthemifolius subsp. mauritanicus, and Ulmus minor subsp. canescens), 7 represent new records for the “Kroumirie”, 15 for the “Mogods”, 3 for the “Tunisie du Nord-Est”, 2 for the “Dorsale Tunisienne”, and 8 for “Cap Bon”. Collecting localities A list of collecting localities, drawn up immediately and daily updated as the excursion progressed, was used as basis for labelling. The locality data were checked and confirmed, as to accuracy of place names and consistency of spelling, by our Tunesian hosts, in par- ticular Ridha El Mokni. The coordinates were ascertained on the spot by means of the global positioning system (GPS) Garmin GPS map CX60.
