Box 24885, Safat 13109, Kuwait Abstract: Land degradation is of great concern in the desert environment of Kuwait, as it has a negative impact on the natural resources. In response to this situation, Kuwait conserves their natural environment by setting aside areas of significant natural ecosystem, such as wild life center at the Liyah area. The area suffered during the past four decades from severe environmental pressures due to the excessive exploitation of natural resources of sand and gravel as well as overgrazing and military activities. Re-vegetation and restoration programs were applied in the degraded areas in Liyah in December 2003. A large variety of native plants were used for the restoration, however, in this research, only one native perennial drought resistant plant Lycium shawii (Awsaj) was highlighted. Tissue cultured thorny shrub planted at experimental site showed high adaptation on gravel hill side with harsh field condition. Their survival rate was 100% under drip irrigation only 10% was the mortality rate due to improper fixation of irrigation system. The average length of the main stem and the number of branches gradually increased by year from 42 cm with three branches in 2011 to 170 cm with seven branches in 2014. -

The vegetation along the roads was disturbed and the erosion started immediately after the disturbance caused by the road construction. Our assumption is that biotechnical measurements should prevent the problems caused by erosion and improve stabilization of road edges. The knowledge of plant species which are able to grow in unfavourable conditions along the roads is important for correct selection of plants used for outplanting. The vegetation succession was observed using phytosociological relevés as a tool of recording and mapping assambblages of plants species along the roads as new linear structures in the landscape. Data from phytosociological relevés were analysed and the succession was characterised in different altitudes. The results can help us to select group of plants (especially shrubs and trees), which are suitable to be used as stabilizing green mantle in various site conditions and for different purposes (anti-erosional, ornamental, protection against noise or dust, etc.). -

This paper presents the first quantitative ethnobotanical knowledge and practices of using native plants for different ailments from Namal Valley of Pakistan. Data was gathered by interviewing 350 informants through semi-structured questionnaires. A total of 217 taxa belonging to 166 genera and 70 families were documented. Fabaceae and Asteraceae families were found to be the most cited families (with 19 and 18 species receptively). Herbs represent the most cited life form (71%) and flower was the most widely used part (34.8%) with decoction as main mode of the utilization (41.5%). On the basis of use values, the most commonly used ethnobotanical taxa in the Valley were reported to be Euphorbia heterophylla (0.7) and Merremia dissecta (0.6). The highest RFC value was noted for Aloe vera (0.14) while highest ICF value was estimated for dental problems category (0.7). -

The relationship of the floristic units to changing water availability, drainage, soil fertility and fire frequency are assessed and the problems of structural versus floristic classifications of forest types are discussed. INTRODUCTION The dry forests of Tasmania occupy some of the most heavily utilised areas of the state. Clearing for agriculture and urban development, sawlog extraction, firewood getting and burning combined with stock grazing have all made their mark on this vegeta tion. -

This study aims to predict the impact of bioclimatic variables in current and future climatic scenarios on the distribution of Inuleae tribe species. Modeling the distribution of 30 species of the Inuleae tribe in Algeria was carried out with a maximum entropy model. Two models with 99 occurrence points were obtained with mean values of Area Under a Curve (AUC) of 0.987±0.01 and 0.971±0.02, reflecting excellent predictive power. Three bioclimatic variables contributed mainly to the first model and four - to the second one with cumulative contributions of 83.8% and 79%, respectively elucidating differences between species of the two major climatic zones in Algeria: the Tell and the Sahara. Two-dimensional niches of Algerian Inuleae species allowed to distinguish these two groups with the distribution of 18 Tell species, characterized by high rainfall (14-18°C, 400-1000 mm) and the other 12 species – distributed in hot and dry environments (17-24°C, 20-200 mm). Modeling the distribution under future conditions showed that habitats of the Saharan region would be much less suitable for these species with a variation in the annual mean temperature increase up to 20% and a decrease in annual precipitation, which could raise to 11 and 15%. -
