Joaquin Sy writes graceful poems in Filipino, while Melchor C. Te has a story called "Ang Lotto" which glitters with the ironies of a de Maupassant story. The other works can be edited-their narrative lines made clearer, their images made sharper, their prose pruned. But then again, that may just be the unabashed formalist in me speaking. • SARE, Vol. 56, Issue 1 | 2019
SARE, Vol. 56, Issue 1 | 2019 Balagtasan Beyond Balagtas: Debate Poetry, a Filipino Tradition Victor Emmanuel Carmelo D. Nadera Jr and Chris Mooney-Singh University of the Philippines-Diliman, the Philippines and LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore Abstract This paper charts the history, influence, and contemporary practice of Balagtasan, a poetic performance tradition that pays homage to the “Filipino Shakespeare,” Francisco Balagtas (born, 1788), predating what is known as “fliptop” or the Filipino rap battle. For 95 years, Balagtasan has debated and explored the social and political terrain and, in so doing, broadened awareness and deeper discussion of important Filipino issues. The authors also consider the impact of competitive jousting between pairs of poets as a grassroots form that has built community throughout an archipelago of 7,107 islands, speaking from rural and urban centres of population across the expanse of water and sky through elegant cultural engagement in Tagalog, the Philippine language. Keywords: Duplo, Francisco Baltazar, Francisco Balagtas, Balagtasan, nationalism, Bukanegan, Crissotan, Tagalog, Ilocano, Kapampangan, poetry, debate, joust, battle, fliptop Balagtasan is an indigenous form of competitive Filipino debate poetry in the Tagalog language. It is a literary joust between two poets with an overseeing judge or emcee-adjudicator that evolved in part from the duplo, performed in rural areas of the Philippines by up to six folk poets. They would stage a mock court event with different players acting out a proto-verse drama. The most mature or respected poet or makata usually played the role of the fiscal or prosecutor, while other poets played the roles of the accused or lawyer representing the accused.

PADAYON SINING: A CELEBRATION OF THE ENDURING VALUE OF THE HUMANITIES Presented at the 12th DLSU Arts Congress De La Salle University, Manila, Philippines February 20, 21 and 22, 2019 Protest Songs in EDSA 1: Decoding the People’s Dream of an Unfinished Revolution Marlon S. Delupio, Ph.D. History Department De La Salle University [email protected] Abstract: “Twenty-six years after Edsa I, also called the 1986 People Power Revolution, exactly what has changed? People old enough to remember ask the question with a feeling of frustration, while those who are too young find it hard to relate to an event too remote in time.” (Philippine Daily Inquirer, 25 of February 2012, 12) The People Power-1 Revolution (also known as EDSA Revolution of 1986 or the Yellow Revolution) was a series of mass demonstrations in the Philippines that took place from February 22-25, 1986. The nonviolent revolution led to the overthrow of then President Ferdinand Marcos that would eventually end his 21-year totalitarian rule and the restoration of democracy in the country. The quote cited above generally represent the sentiment of the people in celebrating EDSA-1 yearly, such feelings of frustration, hopelessness, indifference, and even a question of relevance, eroded the once glorified and momentous event in Philippine history. The paper aims to provide a historical discussion through textual analysis on the People Power-1 Revolution using as lens the three well known protest songs during that time namely: Bayan Ko, Handog ng Pilipino sa Mundo and Magkaisa. Protest songs are associated with a social movement of which the primary aim is to achieve socio-political change and transformation.

  • Art and Politics in the Balagtasan
Art and Politics in the Balagtasan Virgilio S. Almario Lecture delivered as part of the UCLA Center for Southeast Asian Studies Colloquium Series, October 21, 2003 [Dean of the College of Arts and Letters at the University of the Philippines, Diliman campus, Prof. Virgilio S. Almario was named the Philippines’ National Artist for Literature in June 2003. Under the pen name RIO ALMA, Almario has published, edited, and written numerous books and articles of poetry and criticism. He also edited the latest Filipino dictionary “UP Diksiyonaryong Filipino” published by the University's “Sentro ng Wikang Filipino” (Center for the Filipino Language).] The BALAGTASAN is a curious literary form. Born about the second quarter of the 20th century, during the time when electronic media was just being introduced to the Philippines, the BALAGTASAN is probably the last poetic form which was thoroughly enjoyed by the Filipino people. As a literary form, the BALAGTASAN is essentially traditional and can almost be said to be merely a new label for an old bottle of wine. Yet, it contains elements which explain why the traditional remains contemporary and popular. Politically, the BALAGTASAN is the product of the Filipino psyche reacting against the actual and perceived obliteration of the self because of Americanization. In a study I made in the 1970s I called this reaction against Americanization “BALAGTASISMO.”1 The said reaction is primarily nationalist and conservative. As a nationalist movement, BALAGTASISMO embodies the ideals of the Philippine Revolution against Spain and continuously aims to assert Philippine independence from American Occupation. But its political outlook encourages BALAGTASISMO to adopt a very conservative cultural platform.
