Most communication is by “pupil post”. Your child will be responsible for bringing home notes and letters, since we believe this is an important step in the development of their independence. School newsletters are sent by email nearly every week. This helps us to be a more environmentally friendly organisation, and it also means you get the photos in colour! The school website is updated weekly and is a useful source of information (search for “North Nibley School.”) We also place items of school news in the village publication “On the Edge”. If you live outside the village “On the Edge” can be purchased for a small charge through the school, or distributed via email

TIMETABLE FOR STARTING SCHOOL IN SEPTEMBER 2020

In the past we have found it really helpful to begin the year with all Reception children starting school together, as detailed in the timetable below.*

Week 1 Wednesday 2nd School starts with Reception children attending from 8:45 – Thursday 3rd and 11:50. We have found children settle quickest if parents leave Friday 4th September promptly. We would be grateful if parents could, until Monday 14th, bring their children straight into the classroom through the Week 2 Monday 7th to Class 1 side door between 8:40 and 8:50 am. Friday 11th September At 11:50 children can be collected directly from the classroom. Week 3 Monday 14th to Arrive ‘through the Class 1 playground’ and into the playground Friday 18th September between 8.40 a.m. and 8.55 a.m. From 18th September until 20th October we would like parents to say their goodbyes from within our outside play area, so that children can practice their ‘lining up!’ Children stay for lunch. Please collect your child at 1.05 p.m. from the Class 1 play area. Week 4 Monday 21st September Full time for all children. onwards We will approach you early if we feel that this is too soon.

From TUESDAY 3rd November (the first ‘pupil day’ of Term 2) Tuesday 3rd November Week 9 children will be expected to enter school through the main front onwards doors. In this way we encourage their growing independence.

Lunches Children in Classes 1 and 2 qualify for free cooked school lunches. If your child prefers, you can send in a packed lunch. Lunch boxes will need to be named. A menu will be circulated as soon as it is available. This information is also published on our website.

Uniform and other ‘kit’ A ‘book bag’ and water bottle will be given to each child when they start. You can collect ordered items of school uniform from the school office between 8.30am and 9.00am on Tuesday 4th September if you have not collected your order by the end of the summer term.

We look forward to getting to know your child (and yourselves) and will be available at the end of each session to talk to you if you wish.

Yours sincerely

Miss R Allen Paul Batchelor Class Teacher Head Teacher

* PLEASE NOTE – THE DROP-OFF AND COLLECTING ARRANGEMENTS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE AS A RESULT OF THE ON-GOING COVID-19 RESPONSE.

GENERAL SCHOOL INFORMATION

This document contains key information from the School Prospectus and Parent Handbook, which is usually updated in the Autumn Term. Parents are therefore advised to read that too!

Telephone Number 01453 542600 Contact email address: [email protected] School website: www.northnibley.gloucs.sch.uk

Important Information Please ensure that the school office always has up to date contact details for your child. We may need to contact you at short notice and need the latest mobile phone numbers. Remember to update us when you change your details!

On EVERY DAY that your child is ill and not attending school, please telephone the school and leave a message with the administrator, giving details of the illness, by 9.00 a.m. Before 8:30 a.m. you can leave a message on the school answer phone.

The School Day School opens at 8.40 a.m. and children should arrive ready to enter school before 8:55 a.m. so that the register can be taken at 9.00 a.m. The bell rings and children line up in the playground. School closes at 3:15 p.m. Please let us know if you are going to be late collecting children. We are usually happy to respond in an emergency to provide covering care, and you can nominate another adult to take your child home, but you MUST inform us if anyone other than a parent is collecting a child. This prevents panics over missing children! Email is not a convenient media for notification since the office is not staffed full time, and the head is often teaching until 3.15.

Organisation of Classes At present, our 107 children are organised into four classes. The organisation of the classes may vary from year to year due to the differing numbers of children in each year group. For the academic year 2020/21 the children will be grouped in the following way:

Teaching and Learning The Governors at North Nibley School have decided that absent teachers (either ill or on courses) will, wherever possible, be covered by qualified teachers.

Teaching staff are entitled to 10% of the school week as Planning Preparation and Assessment (known as PPA) time. Mr Batchelor and Mrs Dixon provide the PPA cover as needed. We operate a system where the teachers take their PPA time as 1 day per fortnight.

Our staff have differing strengths and areas of expertise. As well as their ‘Class Teacher’ responsibility, teachers also teach lessons in other classes, fully utilising their specialist talents and enabling them to get to know well all the children in the school. Most pupils, therefore, receive PE teaching from Mrs Dixon on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. As Head Teacher, Mr Batchelor ensures that he teaches all the children regularly, and covering all four classes on a rota basis.

We believe that by providing teaching in this way we are providing our pupils with the very best curriculum experiences we can, given the excellent skills and subject knowledge our teachers have.

School Dinners You can choose whether to have a cooked school dinner on a daily basis – booking in advance is not necessary. There is a choice of 3 hot main courses and desserts every day and a menu which repeats itself every three weeks. Copies of the menu are handed out when there is a menu change, and the menu can also be found on the school website. Food allergies and intolerances must be discussed with our office staff. Meals are paid for through ParentPay.

Extra-curricular activities Activities vary from term to term and from year to year. Most activities take place in breaks or after school, apart from violin and woodwind lessons. Pupils also have the opportunity to take part in trips and visits during the year. We have to ask for contributions for these trips but in case of financial difficulties please talk in confidence to the administrator or the Head Teacher.

Page 4

Special Educational Needs (SEN) / Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) The Governors are very keen to make the school as inclusive as possible. This applies to the physical environment as well as to our attitudes and facilities for learners. The Governors have an action plan to ensure that the school complies with the DDA.

The school has an S.E.N. Policy. We publish all the policies required by law on the school website, and can make copies available on request. Our Admission Policy ensures that we do not discriminate against pupils who may have special needs. North Nibley has demonstrated good results with children with learning difficulties and has provided good physical access to the reception class and across the school

For children with any disability or special educational need, please discuss your child with Mr Batchelor, the Head Teacher, or Ms Surridge, our Special Educational Need Co-ordinator (SENCO), at the earliest opportunity.

P.E. Kit All children will need a change of clothing which should be kept at school in a suitably named bag. Dark blue shorts / white round-necked T-shirt / green/navy blue tracksuit for colder weather. As the school is able to use the field for sport, parents should send suitable footwear for outside wear in games sessions. Safe, suitable footwear is needed for all children for outside use and football boots / trainers for junior aged pupils. (We do have some spare football boots in school). A change of socks is also needed. In the Hall, children do P.E. in bare feet, so daps/ plimsolls are not needed.

Lost Property Please make sure that your child’s uniform is clearly labelled. Lost property is kept in a box in the entrance foyer. You are welcome to search through it at any time! Lost Property will be held for 6 weeks and then we will dispose of it.

Personal Property Mobile phones for children are not allowed except in very exceptional circumstances, when they are handed over for safe keeping. Money should not be brought into school except in specific circumstances. It should then be in a labelled envelope and handed directly to the administrator.

Friends Of North Nibley School (FONNS – the Parents & Teacher Association) FONNS Annual General Meeting is held in September and all parents are very welcome to attend. FONNS exists to provide extra resources and ‘treats’ for pupils, through fund-raising, and also to provide social contacts and events for parents. FONNS communicates with parents through the school newsletters and occasional letters and flyers sent directly through pupil post. FONNS also has a closed Facebook page. FONNS is always delighted to receive any support from parents and other members of the community, is always in need of any more committee members, and people willing to get involved in providing assistance at events.

Moral and Spiritual Development and Values Education As a Church of England school, we foster a positive caring ethos where all children feel safe, secure and valued. Christian values pervade the school’s relationships across all age groups. There are good links with the parish church and effective religious education affirms our distinctive ethos as an aided school.

Our parish church is currently without a priest. The school is supported by 8 foundation Governors appointed by the Diocese. We are fortunate that a good number of other church representatives visit regularly to work with us.

Page 5

Children are encouraged to think of others and are actively involved in supporting charities at various times throughout the year.

The children also explore other religions in R.E. lessons and, via practical projects, discover a variety of different cultures and traditions.

Values Education Children learn values in their homes and at school. Values are principles or convictions that act as a guide to behaviour. In school, children learn values from relationships, everyday classroom interactions and from the example set by adults working in the school.

We are explicit at North Nibley School about the values we are teaching. These we believe can act as a common framework in a multi-cultural world to underline the shared framework for our school community.

As with all other aspects of school life, careful planning has gone into our timetable for values education and we have tried to produce a coherent plan for values education that fits into our worship and personal and social education programme in order that children can explore and reason about the values that are being presented during their life in school.

Following community consultation, we decided to focus on the following values;

2020-2021 2021 - 2022 2022 - 2023 Perseverance Friendship Respect

Compassion Forgiveness Responsibility & Justice

Service Hope Thankfulness & Generosity

Health Health Service professionals visit the school to carry out height, weight, hearing and eye sight checks for Reception children, if parental consent has been given. A health questionnaire is carried out with the parents of the Reception aged children. If class teachers become concerned about the health and welfare of your child, they will contact you as soon as possible.

Children are susceptible to many common infections, and we do ask you to provide emergency contact numbers, so that if your child becomes unwell whilst at school, we can contact you or someone you have nominated. Occasionally it is necessary for children to continue a course of medicine following an illness. On such occasions parents will need to make their own arrangements to administer the medicine as the staff are not qualified to give medicines.

An exception would be if a child has a long-standing condition which requires medication e.g. asthma or diabetes, in which case parents are asked to discuss this with the Head Teacher. We ask that parents of children with asthma fill in a record card and ensure that we have an “in-date” inhaler for emergency use. Please ask for a record card at the school office.

Children sometimes come into contact with and develop all sorts of childhood illnesses. Some of these are serious, while others are not. In the case of childhood infectious diseases, please consult your doctor and return your child to school only after the appropriate period of time. We adhere to the restriction that children should be clear of diarrhoea and vomiting for 48 hours at least before they return to school. In all matters of illness we follow the “Guidance on infection control” published by the Health Protection Agency and available from our website.

Behaviour and School Discipline We have a simple behaviour code that pupils are all made aware of at the beginning of each academic year:

I will do my best to:  respect myself and all others;  act with kindness and consideration;  behave in a sensible and responsible way at all times. I do my best by:  listening carefully;  thinking of others when working or moving around the school;  taking responsibility for my own belongings and those of others;  respecting the point of view of others.

Rewards Our emphasis is on rewards to reinforce good behaviour, rather than on failures. We believe that rewards have a motivational role, helping children to see that good behaviour is valued. The commonest reward is praise, informal and formal, public and private, to individuals and groups. It is earned by the maintenance of good standards as well as by particularly noteworthy achievements. We have a system of teams and team points and also award certificates that can be for academic or social achievements. The following rewards are presented publicly during assembly:  Certificates  Team points

Page 7

Sanctions Although rewards are central to the encouragement of good behaviour, realistically there is also a need for sanctions to register the disapproval of unacceptable behaviour and to protect the security and stability of the school community. In an environment where respect is central, loss of respect, or disapproval, is a powerful punishment. Sanctions can include:  expressions of disapproval,  withdrawal of privileges like Golden time  referral to the Headteacher  letters to parents  and, ultimately and in the last resort, exclusion (following the Local Authority guidelines).

Most instances of poor behaviour in our school are relatively minor and can be adequately dealt with through minor sanctions. Where anti-social, disruptive or aggressive behaviour is frequent, and sanctions alone are ineffective, additional specialist help and advice from the Educational Psychologist or Child Guidance Service may be necessary.

An explanation about voluntary-aided schools

Voluntary-aided schools are mainly religious or 'faith' schools, although anyone can apply for a place. The governing body has more powers in a Voluntary Aided school, (a “Voluntary” school is “Aided” by the Local Authority), employing the staff and ensuring that admissions criteria are adhered to.

The Local Authority pays for everything that goes on inside the school through the delegated budget- so funding for staff, resources and energy costs are delegated under a formula set by the County Council.

However, a major difference is that the school buildings and land the school stands on are owned by a charitable foundation; for North Nibley this is the Diocese of Gloucester. The governing body has to contribute 10% of the costs for improving our buildings (but not maintenance repairs) and this explains why our Governing Body, in conjunction with FONNS, carries out fundraising.

Concerns and Complaints Ofsted are the official body for inspecting schools. They do have some powers to investigate your concerns about the services they inspect or regulate but they “suggest that you start by discussing your worries directly with the person in charge, for example, the Head Teacher.” The Governors have a Complaints Policy and Procedure which you can find on our own website – www.northnibley.gloucs.sch.uk For concerns about a school, you can find more information about when and how to complain, the type of complaints Ofsted are able to act upon and the action they can take in Complaints to Ofsted about schools: guidance for parents or you can contact them on 0300 123 4666.

You can also complain about Ofsted. The Leaflet Complaints procedure: raising concerns and making complaints about Ofsted covers concerns and formal complaints about the inspection and regulation work and the work of their staff. More information can be found here - http://www.ofsted.gov.uk/

Page 8

INFORMATION ABOUT THE GOVERNORS Governors oversee the running of the school, setting its strategic direction and safeguarding the school’s educational performance, ethos and financial stability. They are volunteers and meet as a full Governing Body twice a term, with additional meetings for sub-committees. They have legal duties, powers and responsibilities and they can only act together as a Board, not individually.

Governors are appointed to support and, where necessary, challenge the operation of the school, and have insight into all aspects of its life, from academic assessment to standards of behaviour. They interview and appoint members of staff and decide how the school budget is spent. The Governors also play an active role in the life of the school, participating fully in open days, classroom visits and assistance in many areas. The approved minutes of the Governors’ meetings are held in the school office for anyone to read.

Our Governing Body should have 14 governors, comprising: • The Head Teacher and another teacher • 8 Foundation Governors (at least two of whom are parents of children at the school) appointed by the Diocese of Gloucester on the recommendation of the Parochial Church Council of St. Martin’s Church • 2 elected Parent Governors • A representative from the Local Authority. • A co-opted governor The Parent Governors must have a child at North Nibley School at the time of election. They are elected by parents of children at the school, and serve for four years. Parent Governors bring the views of parents to the Governing Body, but they speak and act as individuals. They should not be thought of as delegates of the parents, as they do not vote for all parents in general. They all have equal status and responsibilities in the work of the Governing Body and have equal voting rights.

You can find out more about the governors here: http://www.northnibley.gloucs.sch.uk/governors/

The Clerk to Governors, Anne Robinson, can be contacted by email at [email protected]

PARENT - TEACHER CONSULTATION FOR THE YEAR

This is the formal timetable of parent consultations, based on previous years’ experience. However, some details are subject to change. Parents can always make an appointment to see the class teacher if they have any worries or concerns. Class teachers will also make appointments with parents if they feel there is a particular problem they need to discuss. We like to do this through a personal meeting with the teacher or the Head, but we may have to contact parents by letter on occasion. If concerns about attendance arise, the Head will invite parents to discuss the concerns and possible solutions.

We do try to operate an “Open Door” policy. All of the teachers accompany pupils to the gate after school, and this is intended to provide an opportunity for parents to arrange meetings if they want to. We are, of course, aware that not all parents are able to collect their children at the end of the day, so other arrangements are possible. Mornings tend to be very busy times for teachers, but if there is something that teachers need to be aware of please let them know.

Open School walk-around sessions will be held regularly throughout the year, usually once per term. Parents will be invited in to school, when children will show parents their work and any displays in the classroom. We also intend to make sure that parents are able to view photographs and videos of the many and varied classroom activities that our children undertake, as we have much to celebrate and share with you

SEVERE WEATHER AND THE PROCEDURES FOR EMERGENCY SCHOOL CLOSURE – PARENT COPY

Last revision - January 2019

In the event of severe weather, the Head Teacher will consult with residents local to North Nibley, and decide on the course of action to adopt, in the interests of the safety and education of the children and the safety of staff. Wherever possible, a decision to close will be communicated via the media listed below, by 7.30 a.m.

When the school is closed parents and carers can receive notification by:

 accessing THE NEW Gloucestershire Schools closure site https://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/closures/

 accessing our school website www.northnibley.gloucs.sch.uk  accessing FONNS’ Facebook page – www.facebook.com/groups/351692605004997/  via Twitter @NibleySchool AND @Glos_schools  receiving an email (newsletter subscribers only)  listening to local radio

A new decision will be made for each day of school closure. Information on the school’s status will be updated using the Local Authority web site and Facebook will be updated on a regular basis. Even if school is ‘open’, staff and children should only travel if it is safe to do so.

EMERGENCY SCHOOL CLOSURE DURING THE SCHOOL DAY

If, in the interests of safety, a decision is made to close the school during the working day, staff will do their utmost to ensure that information can be obtained via the above media. Phone calls will be made from the school office, so please ensure that your contact details are correct. We will always have sufficient staff at school to supervise children who are late being collected, but parents are advised that our ‘local’ circumstances may be very different from those where you work. In advance, parents should discuss their wishes with older children who already have permission to walk home alone, especially if a closure means that there is no supervision at home.

If the school does close, this is counted as an authorised absence for children. Families may wish to access the ‘Snow’ pages hosted on our own website, if they are short of an idea or two on how to use the time purposefully!

Dear Parents and Friends,

FINANCIAL SUPPORT AND FREE SCHOOL MEALS

Further to my comments in a recent newsletter, I write to provide more information about the different types of ‘Free School Meals’ available. I understand that in these strange times many families are under financial stress. The following information might help.

There are two types of ‘Free School Meals’ and unfortunately confusion between the two means that many children at North Nibley, I suspect, are missing out on a premium grant that would support them in their education.

Children who are eligible for the Pupil Premium would be entitled to free school meals whatever year group they were in. As well as the meals, around £1,345 would be paid to the school which we could use to benefit them in many ways, including Teaching Assistant help, uniform, the costs with swimming etc and London residential. Even better, this benefit would stay with them and the school, being paid for 6 more years even after they/their family ceased to qualify.

The second type was a benefit brought in around 2010, and simply gives all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 free meals at school. No additional money comes to school to support education. This is known as Universal Infant Free School Meals (UIFSM)

This web page - https://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/education-and-learning/school-transport-and-free- school-meals/apply-for-free-school-meals/ tells you the criteria for qualifying for the free school meals (pupil premium). It is this service that are currently offering vouchers during the COVID-19 lockdown, but other arrangements such as hampers or daily deliveries are also possible.

If you think you qualify please do so as soon as you can. Applications are made directly through Gloucestershire Local Authority.

The second type – Universal Infant Free School Meals – is not supported, for children in qualifying year groups (Reception, Year 1 & Year 2) whilst school is closed to them. (See near to the end of this page - https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-free-school-meals-guidance/covid-19-free-school- meals-guidance-for-schools ). With the imminent reopening of schools for Reception and Year 1, a free packed lunch will initially be offered to those children in school.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me, in confidence, if you need any further help or advice.
