Meascan (page Sound 8) brings together six exceptional musicians Daniel Bannon, Ray Duffy to create a sound which can be described Cian Hamilton, Ray McAndrews as ‘futuristic trad’ and ‘Uprooted’ features the results of a new collaboration between Volunteer Co-ordinator Brokentalkers and a culturally diverse group of Suzanne Donnelly people living in Sligo (pages 30/31). Another world to pop into for a while.’ By atmospheric, perhaps the New Zealander means a beguiling sense of playfulness, mystery and absurdity, as his Barbican debut illustrates. The show comes in three parts: the opening instalment of a five-part film ‘melodrama’ (his description) Bostyn & Dobsyn, revolving around an ambiguous relationship between a music teacher and his pupil, followed by a live set by Jassbusters – also the title of Mockasin’s new album – comprising, ‘a band of music teachers’ - in truth, Mockasin and his band, bassist Nick Harsant, drummer Matthew Eccles and rhythm guitarist Rory McCarthy. Lastly, said ‘teachers’ shed their disguise to play, ‘all the hits!’ he promises, namely selections from preceding albums Forever Dolphin Love and Caramel. How to illuminate this maverick world of Mockasin? The man born Connan Hosford in Te Awanga on the east coast of New Zealand’s north island, and currently living in Tokyo – isn’t much help. ‘It’s just ideas in my head that I put together and , later, might make more sense,’ he vouches. ‘But I don’t think about the meaning at the time.’ To give an idea of Mockasin’s creative process, Caramel was written in the wake of imagining an album called Caramel. Additionally, two of the nine locations are changing: the NYC Happening (on September 6th) will move to Brooklyn, NY’s Riverfront Studios and the Santa Fe/ Lamy Happening (September 18th) will move to the Santa Fe Farmer’s Market Pavilion in Santa Fe, NM. Tickets are selling fast for Station to Station: A Nomadic Happening, the newest project from artist Doug Aitken, a liquid platform for artistic experimentation that connects artists, musicians, and cultural icons with diverse communities for a series of interventions and site-specific happenings. Over the course of three weeks in September, a train will travel from the Atlantic to the Pacific, making nine stops along the way in New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Minnesota, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, each time for a one-night only live event.
