(The Strokes) RESUMO O uso do imaginário medieval é uma tradição que perdura há muito tempo em várias produções artísticas, apesar de suas possíveis problemáticas. O medieval está presente no álbum Little Dark Age (2018), da banda indie norte-americana MGMT. No álbum em questão, a banda evoca elementos desse imaginário enquanto faz uma crítica aos problemas que enxerga na vida contemporânea. Com o avanço da tecnologia, o sujeito contemporâneo, por um lado, comunica-se de modo mais dinâmico e tem maior acesso à cultura e, por outro, experimenta a solidão, a desinformação e a intolerância. Nessa sociedade do espetáculo, as produções artísticas (livros, canções, filmes etc.) são reféns da indústria cultural que, por sua vez, produz artes padronizadas com o intuito de lucrar, deixando de lado a originalidade. Dessa forma, a canção popular é muitas vezes vista como um objeto manipulado pelo capitalismo, pois a indústria segue uma fórmula que influencia as pessoas a consumirem novos produtos semelhantes aos que já consumiram anteriormente. Os artistas indie (independentes) surgem como uma resposta a esse sistema. No entanto, seu discurso pode parecer contraditório, visto que criticam a indústria enquanto estão inseridos nela. Com essas questões em mente, o objetivo desta dissertação é analisar o motivo da escolha da banda pela evocação do imaginário medieval. Portanto, conforme proposto por Ruth Finnegann (2008), discutiremos sobre as três dimensões das canções de modo unificado, entendendo esse gênero como uma das formas literárias mais completas de comunicação de sentimentos e sensações. Para desenvolvermos essas questões, em consonância com Antonio Candido (2006), examinaremos de que forma o contexto social contemporâneo e a estrutura estética da produção lírica, musical e performática se relacionam. Também nos apoiaremos nas discussões teóricas de Debord (1997), Adorno (1996), Eco (1986), Le Goff (2005), Schøllhammer (2007) e Laplantine e Trindade (2017). Com base na análise das dimensões lírica, musical e performática, discutiremos as possibilidades de interpretação derivadas da associação dos elementos sociais com a experiência estética das canções do Little Dark Age e suas relações com os ecos do imaginário medieval. ABSTRACT The use of medieval imagery is a tradition that has long persisted in various artistic productions, despite its possible problems. The medieval is present in the album Little Dark Age (2018), by the American indie band MGMT. In this album, the band evokes elements of this imagery while criticizing the problems it sees in contemporary life.

Umphrey’s McGee has been arranging and performing original mashups live for over eight years. It was only a matter of when, not if, some of those innovative concoctions would find their way into a studio. An album of 12 unique mashups, conceived and arranged by the band, ZONKEY is as seamless as it bizarre, playful as it is razor sharp.

As seasoned students, we hope that we can impart some wisdom to make things easier (the answers to those questions are anything, all of them especially Nouse, anything, and absolutely not, in case you were wondering). As the paper’s resident Music nerd, I’ve taken it upon myself to help with some choices of a musical nature, so you can concentrate on deciding the important things. Below are some albums that might come in handy for various points in your first few weeks at university – and if you absolutely have to jump in the lake, do it to some Queen. For pre-drinking Arriving at agreement for the pre-drinks music can be trickier than you’d think, especially in the face of that overbearing Music student flatmate and the wasted one who only wants to listen to ‘Uptown Funk’. But there are plenty of agreeable options to flesh out a playlist to appeal to all. The Killers – Hot Fuss You’ll be hearing ‘Mr Brightside’ at least twice a night each time you go out, so you’d better make sure you learn all the words beforehand if you don’t know them already.

    MGMT: Little Dark Age spectrumculture.com/2018/02/11/mgmt-little-dark-age-review/ Daniel Bromfield One imagines a pang of dread shooting through the members of MGMT as their debut album, Oracular Spectacular, turned 10 last month. For better or for worse, Oracular Spectacular is now a classic, and its three titanic hit singles—“Kids,” “Time to Pretend” and “Electric Feel”—show no signs of going away. Most bands would be pleased to have a legacy set in stone, but MGMT have spent the better part of the last decade trying to distance themselves from pop stardom and prove to the world—or to themselves— that they’re a serious experimental band. They’ve succeeded, sort of. Though most of the world will always know MGMT for their hits, we no longer have any safe expectations for the “next MGMT album,” and it makes perfect sense that they’re ditching the psych-poppet affectations to reposition themselves as compadres of Ariel Pink and John Maus. Little Dark Age, the duo’s long-gestating fourth album, casts them as graveyard goths whose madcap sense of humor barely keeps the bad vibes at bay. That it works is a testament to just how unpredictable this band has become in its experimental period. This feels like the logical endpoint of the band’s hermeticism. While Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser once presented themselves as cult leaders, with “the handshake under our tongue,” here they’re more like mad prophets broadcasting their ravings to the world from a dingy basement. The music is mid-fi, shrouded in filters that feel like the musical embodiment of the band’s misanthropy, and the dominant instrument isn’t synth or guitar but Matt Asti’s bass, which burbles nauseously out of the gloom.
