Charlotte Gainsbourg and Connan Mockasin will no longer be performing. Additionally, two of the nine locations are changing: the NYC Happening (on September 6th) will move to Brooklyn, NY’s Riverfront Studios and the Santa Fe/ Lamy Happening (September 18th) will move to the Santa Fe Farmer’s Market Pavilion in Santa Fe, NM. Tickets are selling fast for Station to Station: A Nomadic Happening, the newest project from artist Doug Aitken, a liquid platform for artistic experimentation that connects artists, musicians, and cultural icons with diverse communities for a series of interventions and site-specific happenings. Over the course of three weeks in September, a train will travel from the Atlantic to the Pacific, making nine stops along the way in New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Minnesota, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, each time for a one-night only live event. The $25 tickets are still available for Pittsburgh (September 8), Chicago (September 10), Minneapolis/St. Paul (September 12), Santa Fe (September 18), Barstow (September 24), and Oakland (September 28). New York, Winslow, and Los Angeles are sold out. An artist-driven public art project made possible by the Levi’s® brand, all funds from the sale of the tickets, as well as donations that can be made on the Station to Station website, go to support non-traditional programming at Station to Station’s partner institutions: MoMA PS1, Carnegie Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Walker Art Center, SITE Santa Fe, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), the Sundance Institute, and Arcosanti Institute. A moving platform for artistic experimentation, Station to Station invites artists and audiences alike to participate in a creative collision of contemporary art, experimental music, and film. Art works and musical performances will change at every stop. Across the entire journey, musical performances will include: Beck, Jackson Browne, Cat Power, Cold Cave, The Congos, Dan Deacon, Eleanor Friedberger, The Handsome Family, Lia Ices, Kansas City Marching Cobras, Lucky Dragons, Giorgio Moroder, Nite Jewel, No Age, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Savages, Suicide, Sun Araw, THEESatisfaction, Thurston Moore & John Moloney/Caught on Tape, Twin Shadow, YOSHIMIO (OOIOO / Boredoms) & Hisham Akira Bharoocha (Soft Circle / Boredoms) & Ryan Sawyer (Lonewolf) TRIO, White Mystery, and others to be announced. Works by the following artists will be featured throughout the journey: Doug Aitken, Allora & Calzadilla, Francis Alÿs, Kathryn Andrews, Kenneth Anger, Taylor-Ruth Baldwin, Yto Barrada, Jonah Bokaer, Dara Birnbaum Olaf Breuning, Kate Casanova, Peter Coffin, Bruce Conner, Abraham Cruzvillegas, Thomas Demand, Cheryl Donegan, Sam Durant, Olafur Eliasson, Sam Falls, Urs Fischer, Oskar Fischinger, Fischli & Weiss, William Forsythe, Meschac Gaba, Theaster Gates, Liz Glynn, Fritz Haeg, Carsten Höller, Evan Holm, Christian Jankowski, Jim Jarmusch, Karen Kilimnik, Aaron Koblin, Yayoi Kusama, Nam June Paik, Ernesto Neto, Catherine Opie, Jorge Pardo, Philippe Parreno, Raymond Pettibon, Nicolas Provost, Robert Rauschenberg, Ed Ruscha, Jack Pierson, Kelly Sears, Stephen Shore, Roman Signer, Josh Smith, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Ryan Trecartin, James Turrell, Lawrence Weiner, John Whitney, and John Whitney, Jr., among others. Throughout the journey, the food experience is inspired by Station to Station curator, Alice Waters, supporting the Edible Schoolyard Project. Working with Ms. Waters and inspired by her legacy, chef and forager, Leif Hedendal, will create customized culinary interventions both on the train and at each stop to include Slow Food farmers’ markets and his famed Dinner Discussions. Each happening will feature five Nomadic Sculptures created by Kenneth Anger, Urs Fisher, Liz Glynn, Carsten Höller, and Ernesto Neto. The artists were asked to envision a yurt (a portable tent-like dwelling traditionally used by nomads in Central Asia). The Nomadic Sculptures range from Höller’s yurt pierced with holes that visitors can throw Frisbees through, to Glynn’s creation of the universe that will evolve at each stop. Every happening will also include a procession organized by Meschac Gaba—twelve participants wearing different African headdresses will walk among the public as they enter the venue. At each stop a different flag created by Lawrence Weiner will be raised. Kathryn Andrew envisioned a poster for each city—the poster will have an image of one randomly chosen person, and that poster will become the “face” of the happening at each stop. Additionally, at each stop the Levi’s® brand will create and curate yurts, designed as an intimate gallery-like setting where local artists will be designing and crafting new products in real time. A tribute to the Levi’s® brand’s “Makers” program, the Levi’s® yurts will celebrate local artisan products. Artists featured include Folk Fibers, Cobra Boots, Chimayo, and Junkyard Jeans. Details about each happening follows (*details and participants are subject to change*): Friday, September 6, 2013, 6:30-10:30 p.m. SOLD OUT Riverfront Studios, Brooklyn, NY New York is the site of the launch of Station to Station. Performers appearing in New York include No Age, Suicide, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, YOSHIMIO (OOIOO / Boredoms) & Hisham Akira Bharoocha (Soft Circle / Boredoms) & Ryan Sawyer (Lonewolf) TRIO, and others to be announced. Also appearing are The Kansas City Marching Cobras, a unique, region-specific African American marching band that merges traditional dance with aspects of voodoo. Station to Station is bringing this dynamic group to New York, as well as to Pittsburgh, for an energetic, disruptive performance. Renowned choreographer and media artist Jonah Bokaer will present AIRLOCKS, an original trio that will perform a work inspired by Robert Rauschenberg's debut choreographic work, Pelican (1963), on the occasion of work’s 50th anniversary. Rirkrit Tiravanija, known for his participatory and performative installations, will hand out a surprise to guests, while Olaf Breuning will create a site-specific Technicolor smoke installation. Sunday, September 8, 2013, 6:30-10:30 p.m. Union Station/The Pennsylvanian, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania The Pennsylvanian was designed and constructed around 1900, and was originally a train terminus and office building for the Pennsylvania railroad. The evening will include performances by Eleanor Friedberger, No Age, White Mystery, and others to be announced. Minnesota-based artist Kate Casanova’s Vivarium Americana will be parked amongst the Nomadic Structures. It is a sculptural work in which the interior of a black 1976 AMC Pacer has become overgrown with live oyster mushrooms. While guests arrive for the happening, a performance choreographed by the BodyCartography Project, using the produce of Fritz Haeg’s Edible Gardens that was commissioned by the Walker Art Center, will take place. • A Concert Review by Christof Graf
Leonard Cohen`s Tower Of Song: A Grand Gala Of Excellence Without Compromise by Christof Graf A Memorial Tribute To Leonard Cohen Bell Centre, Montreal/ Canada, 6th November 2017 A concert review by Christof Graf Photos by: Christof Graf “The Leonard Cohen Memorial Tribute ‘began in a grand fashion,” wrote the MONTREAL GAZETTE. “One Year After His Death, the Legendary Singer-Songwriter is Remembered, Spectacularly, in Montral,” headlined the US-Edition of NEWSWEEK. The media spoke of a “Star-studded Montreal memorial concert which celebrated life and work of Leonard Cohen.” –“Cohen fans sing, shout Halleluja in tribute to poet, songwriter Leonard,” was the title chosen by THE STAR. The NATIONAL POST said: “Sting and other stars shine in fast-paced, touching Leonard Cohen tribute in Montreal.” Everyone present shared this opinion. It was a moving and fascinating event of the highest quality. The first visitors had already begun their pilgrimage to the Hockey Arena of the Bell Centre at noon. The organizers reported around 20.000 visitors in the evening. Some media outlets estimated 16.000, others 22.000. Many visitors came dressed in dark suits and fedora hats, an homage to Cohen’s “work attire.” Cohen last sported his signature wardrobe during his over three hour long concerts from 2008 to 2013. How many visitors were really there was irrelevant; the Bell Centre was filled to the rim. The “Tower Of Song- A Memorial Tribute To Leonard Cohen” was sold out. Expectations were high as fans of the Canadian Singer/Songwriter pilgrimmed from all over the world to Montreal to pay tribute to their deceased idol.

  • PRESS RELEASE Doug Aitken Opens Multiple Projects Across Europe This Summer
PRESS RELEASE Wednesday 25 March 2015 Doug Aitken opens multiple projects across Europe this summer Victoria Miro is delighted to announce a solo exhibition by Doug Aitken at the Mayfair gallery opening on 12 June. This summer marks a significant moment in the American artist’s career with two important European institutions celebrating his work: Station to Station opens at London’s Barbican on 27 June and a major survey exhibition opens at the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt on 9 July. Victoria Miro Mayfair 12 June – 31 July 2015 This specific constellation of five key works has been conceived for the gallery by Doug Aitken and deals with contemporary ideas of time through the use of sound, touch, light and reflectivity, with each work existing in a zone between abstraction and representation. At the core of the exhibition is Eyes closed, wide awake (Sonic Fountain II), 2014, a free-standing sonic sculpture which combines water and sound to create an optical and auditory experience. Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt 9 July – 27 September 2015 With four expansive film installations and correlating sculptures as well as a site-specific sound installation, this major survey exhibition in Germany will present an overview of the internationally renowned artist’s heterogeneous oeuvre throughout the entire exhibition area of the Schirn – and beyond. The exhibition will be curated by Matthias Ulrich. Station to Station: A 30 Day Happening, Barbican 27 June – 26 July 2015 The Barbican stages the only international stop of Station to Station, Doug Aitken’s experiment in spontaneous artistic creation. A ‘living exhibition’ encouraging cross-disciplinary collaborations among artists from different backgrounds, Station to Station takes over the Barbican’s indoor and outdoor spaces for 30 days, drawing together an inspiring and diverse fusion of international and UK- based artists from the world of contemporary art, music, dance, graphic design and film – much of it created live in the space.
