Over the last years, the festival has had the most diverse range of artists. Some of those who have been on stage are Radiohead, Pixies, Arcade Fire, PJ Harvey, The National, Nine Inch Nails, Kendrick Lamar, Neil Young, Sonic Youth, Portishead, Pet Shop Boys, Pavement, Echo & The Bunnymen, Lou Reed, My Bloody Valentine, Brian Wilson, Pulp, Patti Smith, Nick Cave, Cat Power, Public Enemy, Franz Ferdinand, Television, Devo, Enrique Morente, The White Stripes, LCD Soundsystem, Tindersticks, Queens of the Stone Age, She- llac, Dinosaur Jr., New Order, Fuck Buttons, Swans, The Cure, Bon Iver, The xx, Iggy & The Stooges, De La Soul, Marianne Faithfull, Blur, Wu-Tang Clan, Phoenix, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Tame Impala, The Strokes, Belle & Sebastian, Antony & the Johnsons, The Black Keys, James Blake, Interpol and Sleater-Kinney amongst many others. Primavera Sound has consolidated itself as the urban festival par excellence with unique characteristics that have projected it internationally as a reference cultural event. The event stands out from other large music events and is faithful to its original artistic idea, keeping the same standards and maintaining the same qua- lity of organization of past years, without resorting to more commercial bands. Its characteristics and the wide range of bands performing have been the main reasons that have made Primavera Sound the meeting point of artists and festivalgoers from various generations. Year after year, Primavera Sound has attracted a bigger and bigger crowd. Its first edition in 2001 closed with an attendance of 8000 people, an audience that by the latest edition in 2017 had become 208,000. 3 ATTENDANCE ARTISTS 4 LINE-UP PRIMAVERA SOUND 2018 MONDAY GANGES · KELSEY LU · THE MEN TUESDAY THE SEA AND CAKE · ZA! God bless musicians, because without them none of this would be possible. A vibrant western filmed in Almeria with an unexpected ending draws back the dusters and reveals the lineup of Primavera Sound 2018 today, one of the most eagerly awaited in recent years. The world now knows the names of the 200-odd artists who make up the list of the eighteenth edition of the festival that will take place from 28th May to 3nd June in Barcelona. A festival is not only its lineup, but a lineup says a lot about a festival. And Primavera Sound’s 2018 lineup is stellar, comprehensive, contemporary, with girl power, and conceived for its fans. There is no small print in this signature, eminently danceable, lineup. A lineup that is lots of lineups in one. A lineup that is yours now. A STELLAR LINEUP The trail of big names of Primavera Sound 2018 is overwhelming: Arctic Monkeys’ comeback tour, after four years without performing live, leads the delegation, Björk will perform her resplendent Utopia in her first visit to the festival andNick Cave and The Bad Seeds will finally bring the cathartic Skeleton Tree to the stage in what promises to be a historic concert. These are only the highlights of a stellar list which consecrates The National and The War On Drugs as two of the most crucial rock bands of this generation, A$AP Rocky and Migos as the epitome of today’s hip hop and trap worldwide scene, and Lorde as the new 21st century pop star. As a culmination, this edition also provides the opportunity to see a legendary artist such as Jane Birkin singing songs from her homage record to Serge Gainsbourg accompanied by a 50-pie- ce orchestra. And that is only the beginning. A SIGNATURE LINEUP In these times of fragmentation and impatience, Primavera Sound remains committed to storytelling. The festival lineup cannot be understood only via its individual parts as each artist has been meticulously cho- sen and plays their integral part: each name has its raison d’être. That is why the free jazz legends Art En- semble of Chicago can coexist alongside the all stars of hardcore Dead Cross (with Mike Patton from Faith No More and Dave Lombardo from Slayer), a flamenco freethinker such asCapullo de Jerez alongside local punk heroes La Banda Trapera del Río, the unclassifiableSparks , the return of Mike D (revisiting the clas- sics by the much-missed Beastie Boys), John Maus and of Peter Perrett of The Only Ones, the new radical project by Fermin Muguruza with The Suicide of Western Culture alongside the celestial post-rock by Lift to Experience, Madlib’s futurist sound and the African tradition of the diva Oumou Sangaré, or Watain’s black metal alongside the electronic experimentation of Nils Frahm. Altogether they make up the character of Primavera Sound. A LINEUP WITH GRRRL POWER Year after year, the booking team takes into careful consideration the representation of very diverse origins, sensitivities and backgrounds. In 2018, Primavera Sound yet again backs girl power. Stars such as Björk and Jane Birkin head up an array of talent which includes impressive figures: starting with Jane and Serge’s own 7 daughter Charlotte Gainsbourg, continuing with Haim, Fever Ray, CHVRCHES, Beach House or Warpaint and ending with the return of Lykke Li. There will also be emerging artists such as Lorde, Ibeyi, Maria Arnal, Hinds, Waxahatchee, Yonaka, Vagabon, Jorja Smith, Javiera Mena, Jlin, Bad Gyal and Sevdaliza who are the future of music. At all hours, in all styles, on all the stages: women are the driving force. A LINEUP WITH FLOW In parallel, black music continues to gain ground throughout Primavera Sound, a reflection of the current music scene. This edition will welcome a new king of hip hop, A$AP Rocky –who will come with his third eagerly awaited album– and the very popular trap trio Migos –who became the sensation of 2017 thanks to their anthem Bad and Boujee–. The festival’s long-running commitment to this genre is definitely confirmed with the return of its prodigal children Vince Staples and Tyler, The Creator, with two of the best albums of 2017, as well as Drake’s protégés Majid Jordan and the regeneration that The Internet, Thundercat, Jorja Smith and Kelela bring with them, to mention just a few. A CONTEMPORARY LINEUP As well as looking back for generational references and towards other latitudes to search for new voices, the Primavera Sound lineup always takes the pulse of contemporary music.

  • James Holden & the Animal Spirits Biography
james holden & the animal spirits biography The release of James Holden's long-anticipated second album The Inheritors in the summer of 2013 kicked off a bold new phase in the enduring British electronic guru's musical career. An epic 75 minute long English pagan saga, the immersive and idiosyncratic alternative electronic universe of The Inheritors was the product of Holden's late night studio jams on his modular synthesizer and custom hybrid analogue- digital machines. But with a recording process that had become so focused around the capturing of these private in-the-moment live performances, it was not long before the public act of travelling the world playing other people's records as part of Holden's international DJ career of over ten years standing began to feel increasingly out of step with his most recent studio explorations. The time had come to take the plunge with a live show all of his very own. London-born jazz-trained drummer Tom Page (of brotherly synth-and-drum improv duo Rocketnumbernine) was Holden’s first recruit, joining Holden and a portable incarnation of his modular synth in an improvised reimagining of tracks from The Inheritors, in answer to an impossible-to-turn-down invitation from Thom Yorke to support his Atoms For Peace supergroup on their North American arena tour in the Autumn of 2013. Then once back home on the European festival circuit, the improvisational flourishes of French saxophonist Etienne Jaumet (Zombie Zombie) - whose free-sax freak-out adorns Inheritors highlight The Caterpillar’s Intervention - were a welcome occasional addition to the newly-formed synth-and-drum duo’s continuing live adventures.

  • Jay Som Everybody Works Release Date: March 10, 2017
Jay Som Everybody Works Release Date: March 10, 2017 On her first proper album asJay Som, Melina Duterte, 22, solidifies her rep as a self- made force of sonic splendor and emotional might. If last year’s aptly named Turn Into compilation showcased a fuzz-loving artist in flux—chronicling her mission to master bedroom recording—then the rising Oakland star’s latest, Everybody Works, is the LP equivalent of mission accomplished. Duterte is as DIY as ever—writing, recording, playing, and producing every sound beyond a few backing vocals—but she takes us places we never could have imagined, wedding lo-fi rock to hi-fi home orchestration, and weaving evocative autobiographical poetry into energetic punk, electrified folk, and dreamy alt-funk. And while Duterte’s early stuff found her bucking against life’s lows, Everybody Works is about turning that angst into fuel for forging ahead. “Last time I was angry at the world,” she says. “This is a note to myself: everybody’s trying their best on their own set of problems and goals. We’re all working for something.” Everybody Works was made in three furious, caffeinated weeks in October. She came home from the road, moved into a new apartment, set up her bedroom studio (with room for a bed this time) and dove in. Duterte even ditched most of her 1. Lipstick Stains demos, writing half the LP on the spot and making lushly composed pieces like 2. The Bus Song “Lipstick Stains” all the more impressive. While the guitar-grinding Jay Som we first fell in love with still reigns on shoegazey shredders like “1 Billion Dogs” and in 3.
