The days when it takes place are always the last Thursday and Friday of January every year. The conference is the biggest research event at the faculty that represents the major spheres of the humanities, research subjects, methodologies, and interdisciplinary innovations at DU. Among the participants of this annual venue there are many well-known and young researchers both from Latvia and many countries over the world. The mission of the Scientific Readings of DU is to bring together researchers to discuss topical issues in linguistics, literary science, history, and culture, applying both traditional, approbated and modern, interdisciplinary research methodologies to characterizing the processes of the humanities, and to sustain and establish research contacts. A particular focus of the conference is on those research trends that the Faculty of Humanities of DU specializes in – comparative literature, contrastive linguistics, translation studies, regional studies, oral history research, culture studies, characteristics of the phenomena of periphery and diaspora. New cooperation agreements are often signed during the conference by the Faculty of Humanities of DU. The idea of the conference was inspired by the professor of DU Faculty of Humanities, Dr. habil. philol. , corresponding member of Latvian Academy of Sciences, Fjodors Fjodorovs and professor Joel Veinberg (1922–2011). The papers presented at the Scientific Readings are published by DU in research paper collections added to the international citation index: Journal of Comparative Studies (EBSCO, Copernicus); Comparative Studies (EBSCO); Literature and Culture: Process, Interaction, Problems (EBSCO); History: Sources and People (EBSCO); Language in the Context of Various Cultures (EBSCO); Cultural Studies (EBSCO). • Interaction Between the Number of Visitors at Tourist Accommodation Establishments and the Economic Development in Latvia
Economics and Rural Development Vol. 8, No. 1, 2012 ISSN 1822-3346 INTERACTION BETWEEN THE NUMBER OF VISITORS AT TOURIST ACCOMMODATION ESTABLISHMENTS AND THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN LATVIA Aina Muska1, Ligita Bite2 Latvia University of Agriculture, Latvia The research hypothesis: the economic development of a district affects the number of visitors at tourist accommodation establishments outside Riga region. The research aim is to identify a correlation between the number of visitors at tourist accommodation establishments and the economic development of a district in Latvia. The research was done using data broken down by statistical region and districts (a unit of administrative division of the territory of Latvia until the middle of 2009). The research showed that the majority (more than 60%) of visitors at Latvian tourist accommodation establishments were foreign tourists whose share at Riga tourist accommodation establishments accounted for more than 70%. Outside Riga region, more than 70% of visitors were local (Latvian) tourists, mostly business tourists. In the research period, more than half of visitors at tourist accommodation establishments concentrated in Riga region, while more than 10% – in Pieriga and Kurzeme regions. The share of visitors in the other regions did not exceed 6% of their total number. According to a cluster analysis, an explicit trend of monocentric economic development is specific to Latvia, resulting in significant differences between Riga, the capital city of Latvia, and the other districts of Latvia. The number of visitors at tourist accommodation establishments is higher in the clusters having a high (Riga) and medium (districts of Riga, Liepaja, Ventspils, and Daugavpils) level of economic development than in the clusters with a lower level of economic development (districts of Aluksne, Balvi, Dobele, Gulbene, Kraslava, Ludza, Preili, and Valka).

  • Artistic Alliances and Revolutionary Rivalries in the Baltic Art World, 1890–1914
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL FOR HISTORY, CULTURE AND MODERNITY www.history-culture-modernity.org Published by: Uopen Journals Copyright: © The Author(s). Content is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Licence eISSN: 2213-0624 Artistic Alliances and Revolutionary Rivalries in the Baltic Art World, 1890–1914 Bart Pushaw HCM 4 (1): 42–72 DOI: 10.18352/hcm.503 Abstract In the areas now known as Estonia and Latvia, art remained a field for the Baltic German minority throughout the nineteenth century. When ethnic Estonian and Latvian artists gained prominence in the late 1890s, their presence threatened Baltic German hegemony over the region’s culture. In 1905, revolution in the Russian Empire spilled over into the Baltic Provinces, sparking widespread anti-German violence. The revolution also galvanized Latvian and Estonian artists towards greater cultural autonomy and independence from Baltic German artistic insti- tutions. This article argues that the situation for artists before and after the 1905 revolution was not simply divisive along ethnic lines, as some nationalist historians have suggested. Instead, this paper examines how Baltic German, Estonian and Latvian artists oscillated between com- mon interests, inspiring rivalries, and politicized conflicts, question- ing the legitimacy of art as a universalizing language in multicultural societies. Keywords: Baltic art, Estonia, Latvia, multiculturalism, nationalism Introduction In the 1860s a visitor of the port towns of Riga or Tallinn would have surmised that these cities were primarily German-speaking areas of Imperial Russia. By 1900, however, one could hear not only German, but Latvian, Estonian, Russian, as well as Yiddish on the streets of Riga 42 HCM 2016, VOL.

Since this Latvian army victory, first celebrated as Lāčplēsis Day on 11 November1920, accounts of this battle have been unrepresented, poorly represented or misrepresented. For example, the 2007 historical film Rīgas Sargi (The Defenders of Riga) uses the 1888 poem Lāčplēsis by Andrējs Pumpurs as a template to portray the Latvians successfully defeating the German-Russian force on their own without Allied military aid. Pumpurs’ dream and revolutionary legacy has provided a well used script for Latvian nation building.

I also want to extend my special thanks to professor Andris Straumanis, University of Wisconsin – River Falls, who generously shared his expertise, time, and advice in launching my research project, reaching out to the community, as well as his invaluable and critical feedback on my findings about Latvians in the United States. This study would not have come about if not for the extraordinary responsiveness of the Latvian community. There are no words to thank enough the Latvian supplementary school principals who provided me access to their schools; to teachers and parents, as well as the Latvian community leaders, who shared their stories, insights, and experiences. My special thanks goes to the Latvian community in Minnesota, which has been my “home” for the last three years and whose support and financial assistance allowed me to participate in various Latvian events around the United States. This study would not have come about also without the generous support of the Immigration History Research Center (IHRC) staff and directors Dr.
