In a meeting at the office of the then Rector, Professor M. Auziņš, it was agreed that the support will be targeted specifically at the students of social sciences engaged in practical research. Consequently, at the end of 2012, the University of Latvia Foundation received a donation from Eigits Dāvis Timermanis in the form of three real estate properties, the revenues yielded by which should be used to support excellent students performing research significant for the national economy. To date, Timermanis’ scholarships have been granted to three doctoral students from the Faculty of Business, Management and Economics: Ieva Pūķe, Madara Apsalone and Kristīne Petrovska. Ieva Pūķe received support for a research project on the factors affecting marketing process in young exporting companies. Madara Apsalone accomp- lished a research work “The Role of Socio-Cultural Factors in 7 Karavira_stasts_ENG.indd 7 23-Sep-20 17:07:38 Promotion of Knowledge Management and Organizational Innovations as the Source of Long-Term Competitiveness of Small and Medium Enterprises in Latvia”, whereas Kristīne Petrovska presented the assessment of systemic risks in the banking business using as an example Latvia as a small and open economy. Roberts Dāvīds Timermanis, the father of Eigits Dāvis Timer manis, was an alumnus of the University of Latvia. In 1932, R. D. Timermanis entered the University of Latvia Faculty of Economy and Legal Sciences, the Department of Economy, and graduated in 1937. In 2018, at the request of the University of Latvia Foundation, Eigits Dāvis Timermanis gave 3500 euros for establishment of the Alumni Trail in the University of Latvia Botanical Garden. This donation is dedicated to the memory of his father as the alumnus of the University of Latvia. Thanks to the support rendered by Eigits Dāvis Timermanis, two historians — Professor Ēriks Jēkabsons and Mg. hist. Reinis Ratnieks — have collected archive materials and other sources that have resulted in a book about Captain Roberts Dāvīds Timermanis. This volume contains a con- suming material for those who are interested in Latvia’s military history of the first half of the 20th century and the history of national resistance. The University of Latvia Foundation hereby expresses its gratitude to Eigits Dāvis Timermanis for his support rendered to the leading University of Latvia researchers and projects. Laila Kundziņa, Executive Director of the University of Latvia Foundation, Member of the Board 8 Karavira_stasts_ENG.indd 8 23-Sep-20 17:07:38 CHAPTER 1 Latvian soldier Roberts Dāvīds Timermanis Introduction This book is dedicated to a Latvian and a soldier Roberts Dāvīds Timermanis — one of many patriots of this country, who in the middle of the 20th century was forcibly drawn into the tragic events sweeping over the state and people of Latvia. He was destined to live at the time when the young people of Latvia who had chosen the military career experienced the birth of the Latvian state on the ruins of the Russian empire, its progress as a sturdy and vibrant European country and its destruction followed by total annihilation of the people’s achievements of two decades, their hopes and aspirations. Moreover — a substantial part of the national elite was ruthlessly physically exterminated and the Nazi occupation regime forced the Latvian soldiers to take up arms and fight against the Soviet Union, hoping that at the end of the war, like in 1919, the situation would be favorable for restoring the independence of Latvia, if the weapons were held by the Latvians. All those events were also experienced by Roberts Timermanis. Besides, at the end of the war, he was 9 Karavira_stasts_ENG.indd 9 23-Sep-20 17:07:38 among those who continued to fight against the occupants underground and perished in this clash of unequal forces. Due to the abovementioned circumstances, the life of Roberts Dāvīds Timermanis provides us with an opportunity to examine one of the most complicated periods in the 20th century history of Latvia, starting from the years of its independence until its second occupation by the Soviets after World War I. This exploration has been performed by consecutively following up Roberts Dāvīds Timermanis’ childhood, youth, choice of profession, service as an officer in the Latvian Army, studies at the military college and further service in army, experience in the years of occupation, the Latvian legion and post-war partisan life in the Latvian forests, tragically cut short by an occupant’s bullet. Along with the close contemplation of R. D. Timermanis’ life and activities, the authors briefly characterize the general military, political and social situation at that time. Family, childhood and youth Roberts Dāvīds Timermanis’ family stems from the Latvian farm ers’ stock of Zemgale. His father Dāvis (in official

The results demonstrated that the mean water temperatures during the monitoring period from May to October were higher in the largest rivers (from 13.6 oC to 16.1 oC) compared to those in the smallest rivers (from 11.5 oC to 15.7 oC). Similar patterns were seen for the maxi- mum water temperature: in large rivers from 22.9 oC to 25.7 oC, and in small rivers from 20.8 oC to 25.8 oC. Generally, lower water temperatures occurred in rivers with a high groundwater inflow rate, for example, in rivers of the Gauja basin, in particular, in the Amata River. Mann-Kendall test results demonstrated that during the monitoring period from May to October, mean water tem- peratures had a positive trend. However, the annual maximum temperature had a negative trend. Key words: water temperature, long-term changes, river, Latvia.

In the years between the two World Wars the concept became more political in nature: after Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania obtained their independence in 1918 the region gradually became understood as the geographical entity made up of these three republics. Although the Baltic region is geographically fairly homogeneous, each of the newly restored republics possesses unique geographical and strategic features.

  • 184 Centralized Leadership, in Contrast to Lithuania, Was Not
184 Book Reviews centralized leadership, in contrast to Lithuania, was not established. There were regional organizations: the National Kurzeme Organiza tion of Latvian Partisans (1945), the National Vidzeme Movement of Latvian Partisans (1944-1948), the Latvian Union of Fatherland Guards (Partisans) (LTS(p)A) in Latgale (1945). The latter organization imi tated the structure of the Latvian army, its four divisions; it also made unsuccessful attempts to unify the partisan movement. Nevertheless, the leaders of these organizations (K.Rusovs, A. Cirulis (Varpa), pas tor A. Juhnevics, K. Blumbergs, V Mundure (Marta Skuja)) as well as the leaders of partisan detachments (such as P. Cevers) contributed greatly to the survival of the resistance movement. On February 1, 1954 there were still 105 partisans in Latvia. However, in 1956 they either surrendered or perished. On the basis of thoroughly collected and profoundly analyzed documentary material the author presents a comprehensive panorama of the partisan movement, the activities of separate organizations and the chronological stages of the struggle for freedom. To our knowl edge this is the only detailed history of the Latvian partisan warfare there is. In its turn, it will enable historians of Lithuanian 'resistance to draw generalized conclusions on the basis of more than their own country's experience, and, at the same time, develop new research as pects. • The Military Heritage and Environment of Kurzeme
SELFDRIVE THE MILITARY HERITAGE AND ENVIRONMENT OF KURZEME The NATURA 2000 system was established by European Union member states to protect a large series of environmental territories. In Latvia’s case, the system includes territories that were protected before it was set up, as well as 122 new territories. Each EU member state establishes its own system of territories, and these are then joined in the central system. NATURA 2000 territories are of European importance and are environmentally protected. Along this route, the most interesting NATURA 2000 territories include the Zvārde Forest Park, the Embūte Nature Park, the Ziemupe Nature Reserve and the Nature Park of the Ancient Abava River Valley. While in these territories, please be gentle with environmental, cultural and historical values. Keep the “interests” of birds in mind when birdwatching. ROUTE During the Soviet era, Latvia was the western border of the USSR, and that made it a strategic location in which lots of military resources were concentrated. During the Soviet occupation, there were more than 1,000 Soviet military units in Latvia, and they controlled some 600 facilities equalling to more than 10% of the territory of the Latvian SSR. In other words, Latvia was behind the Iron Curtain for nearly half a century. Border guard posts, tank bases, aviation bases, military airfields, storage facilities for weapons and munitions (including nuclear missiles), military espionage facilities and other, similar entities were mostly centred on the shore of the Baltic Sea, where there was a special frontier regime. It was just 20 years ago that people were allowed to be on the beach only during sunlight and in very limited areas.

Abstract: The article discusses the genesis and formation of the Republic of Latvia – from the 1917 February Revolution in the Russian Empire to the settlements of relations with the Bolsheviks and its de iure recognition by the Entente states. Ample space is devoted to the context of this process, the confrontation in the Baltic region, especially in Latvia, between the policy of Bolsheviks, ‘White’ Russians, Germany, Great Britain, and Poland in particu- lar. The text emphasises the importance of the Polish Army’s victory in the war against the Bolsheviks for the stabilisation of Latvia’s internal position. Its substantial part is made up by the reconstruction based on the preserved documents of the formation of Latvian borders, emphasising the dispute over the south-eastern district of Pytalovo (Abrene).
