At this time, a number of contemporary artists had been experimenting with the medium of screenprinting; the earlier portfolio, as its title suggests, was one of the frst to exploit the medium’s ability to create prints on a larger scale. Some of the other artists invited to make prints for the frst portfolio were Peter Blake, Bernard Cohen, Robyn Denny, John Hoyland and Eduardo Paolozzi. The story goes that it was Peter Blake who suggested to Bernard Jacobson that, as a riposte to 14 BIG Prints, he might ask artists to make prints on a very small scale, through a note left at the original gallery. 14.
