Sir James Hardy OBE
The Carbine Club of NSW Sir James Hardy OBE Born: November 1932 Carbine Club Member since: 1979 Sir James Gilbert Hardy OBE AASA is an Australian winemaker and businessman who is also noted for his yachting achievements. A descendant of the South Australian winemaker Thomas Hardy, James Hardy was born at Seacliff, South Australia. His father, Tom Mayfield Hardy, who was appointed chairman and managing director of Thomas Hardy and Sons in 1924, was one of those killed near Mount Dandenong on 25 October 1938 in the crash of the plane "Kyeema". Tom Hardy was a noted sailor, associated with the yacht Nerida at the Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron. Hardy was educated at Brighton Primary School, St. Peter's College and the South Australian Institute of Technology. On leaving school, he spent two years share farming at Port Vincent, South Australia, then joined the family wine company Thomas Hardy and Sons in 1953, working as a shipping clerk. He then served as Sales Supervisor from 1957 to 1961, then as Regional Director for the Eastern States of Australia, when he and his family moved permanently to Sydney with a residence at Manly. He was appointed chairman in 1981 and non-executive director in 1992 when it merged to become BRL Hardy Wine Company. A renowned world champion yachtsman, Hardy represented Australia at two Olympic Games (1964 in Tokyo and 1968 in Mexico City), skippered three America's Cup challenges in 1970, 1974 and 1980), and competed in four Admiral's Cup Ocean Racing Championships. Hardy has served 25 years on the executive committee of the Neurosurgical Research Foundation of South Australia.

In early October 2013, the International Fleet Review, which hosted ships from twenty nations, was a spectacular celebration of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Royal Australian Navy and commemorated the arrival of the first seven ships on 4 October 1913. Today’s celebration on Australia Day reminds us of our history, honours those who contributed to that history and celebrates the foundation of our nation. In doing so, we acknowledge the first Australians and pay respect to the Gadigal and Cammeragil people, recognising them as having been fine custodians of Sydney Harbour. On this 178th Australia Day Regatta on Sydney Harbour, hundreds of sailors and their families will participate in a wonderful spectacle on one of the world’s greatest waterways. The Anniversary Regatta, as it was then known, commenced in 1837 just one year after South Australia was proclaimed a colony and before Victoria, Queensland or Tasmania (it was still called Van Diemen’s Land) were formally declared provinces. There is no better way to mark the birth of a nation surrounded by sea and developed through our great maritime heritage than by participating in the Australia Day Regatta. We welcome all those who have entered their craft, large or small, old or new. With the support of our host clubs they will celebrate Australia Day on more than 20 different waterways.

She was essentially an Illingworth-designed, fast ocean racer campaigned by South Australians and indeed once crewed by myself. During her days of glory she fostered many well known yachtsmen. Her owner, Norman Howard, died and she fell on hard times but she was resurrected to sail on, contributing to the careers of further yachtsmen.

William David Hardy
Sir James Hardy O.B.E Born in 1932, Jim Hardy ("Gentleman Jim" to his many friends and admirers) is widely renowned for his astute business acumen, however is mainly identified in the Australian community as a yachtsman, and indeed sailing has been his primary love since he was born and brought up at Seacliff on the coast of the Gulf of St Vincent, near Adelaide. He became a household name in Australia when he represented Australia at the 1964 Olympic Games in Japan and then again in 1968 in Mexico. He won the 505 Class World Yachting Championships in Adelaide in 1966, and was the captain of Australian 12-metre boats in three challenges for the America's Cup in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1970 (on "Gretel 2"), in 1974 ("Southern Cross") and in 1980 ("Australia"). His experience and training of other crew paid off in the 1983 challenge when John Bertrand, who had sailed with him on the three previous Cup challenges, finally took out the top honours. He has also sailed widely elsewhere, including being number one helmsman of the winning yacht "Impetuous" in the 1979 Admiral's Cup races from Cowes, United Kingdom, and was awarded the Australian Yachtsman of the Year 1980-81. One of four children, James Hardy was born in Adelaide in 1932 to Thomas Mayfield Hardy and Eileen Hardy, and was educated at St Peter's College, Adelaide (1943-50). He became a qualified accountant and an Associate of the Australian Society of Accountants and worked for two rural companies before joining his family firm, Thomas Hardy & Sons Pty.
