Jamil1 Faculty of Agricultural Sciences-Sulaimani University, Bakrajo Street, Sulaimaniyah - Iraq Abstract: The volatile oils of Rosemarinus Officinalis (rosemary) and Thymus citriodorus (Lemon thyme) at different concentration (0.1, 0.25, and 0.5) % were used to examine their preservation impacts on raw chicken.). Chicken pieces were immersed in ethanolic solutions (10 %) of the volatile oils of rosemary and lemon thyme for 30 minutes stored in (30oC) and in a fridge (4oC.After the first day, control samples were found completely putrefied, whereas samples treated with VOs (0.25 and 0.5 %) were found with acceptable organoleptic attributes and significant microbial prohibition for five days at (30oC) and for 10 days in the fridge (4oC). It can be concluded that beside their desirable flavours, the herbal VOs used can be considered as a natural preservative to prolong shelf life of raw poultry and this could have an economical potential on raw chickens at industrial level. The aerial parts of plants were harvested in august, dried quickly and alcoholic extracts were prepared. Total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), DPPH radical scavenging activity, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) value, and antimicrobial properties were determined using the extracts. TPC showed that Lebanon thyme had higher concentration compared with Romanian thyme (13.78 ± 0.95 mg GAE/g DW and 12.14 ± 0.97 mg GAE/g DW, respectively). DPPH• was calculated as IC50 and the sample results were compared with gallic acid. FRAP results showed similar values 42.71 ± 4.24 µM Fe+2/g DW (Romanian thyme) and 39.55 ± 4.21 µM Fe+2/g DW (Lebanon thyme). The antibacterial activity of summer savory was found to have maximum effect against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 9144. Bioactive compounds, measured as total phenolic content, were in higher concentration in both extracts which also relates to their antioxidant and antibacterial activities. -

To achieve this goal, aerial parts of this species and top 30 cm soil samples of from five regions in East Azarbaijan province of Iran was collected. Oil samples were extracted by hydrodistillation method. Percentage of essential oil with soil pH has a significant positive relation and there is significant negative relation with altitude. Evaluating environmental factors, we found regional altitude and soil pH as the important factors influencing the production of oil. We conclude that ecological factors are important and should be taken into account for cultivation of Thymus pubescens. Essential oils (EOs) derived from leaves and flowers of Thymus serpyllum and Thymus linearis grown in northern India were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. A total of 37 components forming 94.8-98.4% of EO composition were identified. The EOs of both species were rich in thymol, p-cymene and - terpinene. Thymol was higher in the EO of T. linearis (74.6-75.8%) compared to T. serpyllum (51.9-70.1%). The amount of thymol methyl ether, p-cymene, 1-octen-3-ol, camphor and borneol was relatively higher in T. serpyllum EO.
