April 26, 2019 Theodore Payne Foundation’s Wild Flower Hotline is made possible by donations, memberships, and the generous support of S&S Seeds. Now is the time to really get out and hike the trails searching for late bloomers. It’s always good to call or check the location’s website if you can, and adjust your expectations accordingly before heading out. Please enjoy your outing, and please use your best flower viewing etiquette. Along Salt Creek near the southern entrance to Sequoia National Park, the wildflowers are abundant and showy. Masses of spring flowering common madia (Madia elegans) are covering sunny slopes and bird’s-eye gilia (Gilia tricolor) is abundant on flatlands. Good crops of owl’s clover (Castilleja sp.) are common in scattered colonies and along shadier trails, woodland star flower (Lithophragma sp.), Munz’s iris (Iris munzii), and the elegant naked broomrape (Orobanche uniflora) are blooming. There is an abundance of Chinese houses (Collinsia heterophylla) and foothill sunburst (Pseudobahia heermanii). This is a banner year for the local geophytes. Mountain pretty face (Tritelia ixiodes ssp. anilina) and Ithuriel’s spear (Triteliea laxa) are abundant. With the warming temperatures farewell to spring (Clarkia cylindrical subsp. clavicarpa) is starting to show up with their lovely bright purple pink floral display and is particularly noticeable along highway 198. OF AGRICULTURE NATURAL RESOURCES CONSERVATION SERVICE Portland, OR April 2005 PLANT MATERIALS No. 37 Identification, Ecology, Use and Culture of Sitka Alder Dale C. Darris, Conservation Agronomist, Corvallis Plant Materials Center Introduction Sitka alder [Alnus viridis (Vill.) Lam. & DC. subsp. sinuata (Regel) A.& D. Löve] is a native deciduous shrub or small tree that grows to height of 20 ft, occasionally taller. Although a non-crop species, it has several characteristics useful for reclamation, forestry, and erosion control. The species is known for abundant leaf litter production, the fixation of atmospheric nitrogen in association with Frankia bacteria, and a strong fibrous root system. Where locally abundant, it naturally colonizes landslide chutes, areas of stream scour and deposition, soil slumps, and other drastic disturbances resulting in exposed minerals soils. These characteristics make Sitka alder particularly useful for streambank stabilization and soil building on impoverished sites. In addition, its low height and early slowdown in growth rate makes it potentially more desirable than red alder (Alnus rubra) to interplant with conifers such as Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menzieii) and lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) where soil fertility is moderate to low. However, high densities can hinder forest regeneration efforts. The species may also be useful as a fast growing shrub row in field windbreaks. Sitka alder is most abundant at mid to subalpine elevations. Low elevation seed sources (below 100 m) are uncommon but probably provide the best material for reclamation and erosion control projects on valley floors and terraces. Distribution and Identification Sitka alder (Alnus viridis subsp. sinuata) is a native deciduous shrub or small tree that grows to a height of 1-6 m (3-19 ft) in the mountains and 6-12 m (19-37ft) at low elevations. -

139 A Suspected Case of Stock Poisoning by Wild Onion (Allium Canadense.)^ F. J. PiPAL, Purdue University. On June 23, 1917, a case of live-stock poisoning had been reported by Mr. William Feldt, living about live and one-half miles southeast of Lafayette. Dr. G. M. Funkhouser, of Lafayette, who investigated the case, reported, in substance, the following facts: Five cows and one heifer were taken from a timothy pasture, which was rather dry and short at that time, and turned into a woods pasture on Sunday morning. In the evening of the same day, only four cows and the heifer returned from the pasture to the farm barnyard. The fifth cow was found in the pasture lying down and unable to get up. When the cows were milked it was noticed, with one exception, that the milk emitted a very strong and offensive odor and had considerably decreased in quantity. The breath of the cows was also strongly tainted with this odor and, in fact, it seemed that their whole bodies exhaled it. On the following morning the doctor found the cow left in the pasture in a complete paralytic condition, her temperature, however, being quite normal; she died two days later. One of the cows in the barnyard was, by this time, in a similar condition and died the same day. One of the remaining three cows stood with her head erect, the hair bristling, and refused to move. Another had a tendency to draw her head to one side and when compelled to move went around in a circle and fell down. -

Different plant species were grouped into ‘species groups’ for which one ortholog was selected and added to the orthogroup, in order to keep the orthogroup topology fixed and to facilitate automation on the one hand, but also to allow enough orthogroups to be constructed on the other hand (see Material and methods). -

The in a modern world. Stab-Lok products are no longer manufactured, but millions had been installed in residential and commercial buildings between 1950 and 1985. The purpose of the breaker is to protect the building from fire in the event of an electrical circuit abnormality. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) investigated many reports in 1982 of Stab-Lok breakers failing to trip as required by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) testing standards. The CPSC did not have the funding to further investigate this problem or arrive at a definitive conclusion. Tests by the CPSC and independent consulting engineers concluded that certain Stab-Lok breakers do not trip according to UL requirements and in some cases, can jam in the “on” position. In addition, overheating problems have been found within the panelboard internal bus connections. Unfortunately, this information surfaced after many Stab-Lokinstallations were completed and had been in service for years. In 2002, a New Jersey class-action lawsuit decided that the manufacturer of the Stab-Lok breakers committed fraud over many years in issuing UL labels to products they knew did not meet the UL testing requirements. We have never had so many problems in fitting the range of plants we have “on our books” into the available space! We always try and keep our lists “democratic” and balanced although at times our prejudices show and one or two groups rise to the top. This year we are offering an unprecedented range of calochortus in a multiplicity of sizes, colours and flower shapes from the charming fairy lanterns of C. albidus through to the spectacular, later-flowering mariposas with upward-facing bowl-shaped flowers in a rich tapestry of shades from canary-yellow through to lilac, lavender and purple. Counterpoised to these flashy dandies we are offering an assortment of choice muscari whose quiet charm, softer colours and Tulipa vvedenskyi Tecophilaea cyanocrocus Violacea persistent flowering make them no less effective in the winter and spring garden.
