Our life has no other goal, not other meaning, and yet, so many are not able to understand this. I am at the service of Jesus twenty-four hours a day. I do every action for him and it is he who gives me the strength to do it. I love him in the poor and I love the poor in him, but it is the Lord who always occupies first place. Whenever we receive a visitor, I always accompany him or her to the chapel saying as I do : “First let us greet the master of the house. Jesus is here: we work for him; it is to him that we give ourselves—and he strengthens us to live this life with joy.” We know only too well that what we are doing is nothing more than a drop in the ocean. But if the drop were not there, the ocean would be missing something. I am only God’s pencil, one that he uses to sketch whatever he wants. Like a Drop in the Ocean, 99 Sayings by Mother Teresa St.George’s Catechetical Committee are planning to organ- ize Vertep caroling (the Nativity skit) with the youth (13+) and young adults Saturday and Sunday January 11thand 12th.Please, let us know by December 11thif you, your daughter or son is willing to participate (306-914-0355 - Viktoriia) or if you have any questions. Vertep will be or- ganized if we have enough young people willing to carol. MAKE A CHILD HAPPY Will you again open your hearts as you did last year and provide Christmas gifts for the children of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish? The Christmas tree next to the icon of Our Lady of Guadalupe is the focus of this wonderful undertaking by our St. George’s Parishioners. On the tree are tags that identify the age and gender of a Guadalupe child. Please take one or more of these tags and and provide gifts valued at around $10-$15 each. Please wrap your gift with the tag attached so that we can match your gift to a boy or girl of appropriate age. Bring your gifts to Church and place them under our tree. Your gifts will bring much joy to the children. For some, this will be their only Christmas gift. St. George’s Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral has a special friendship relationship with our neighbours at Guadalupe First Nation and Metis Catholic Parish. Your Christmas gifts are visible signs of the depth of our Parish’s commitment to building this friendship. We thank Iris Owchar and Gladys Rogalski who organize this Christmas blessing. From Upyr’ to Vampir: The Slavic Vampire Myth in Russian Literature Dorian Townsend Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Languages and Linguistics Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences The University of New South Wales May 2011 PLEASE TYPE THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES Thesis/Dissertation Sheet Surname or Family name: Townsend First name: Dorian Other name/s: Aleksandra PhD, Russian Studies Abbreviation for degree as given in the University calendar: School: Languages and Linguistics Faculty: Arts and Social Sciences Title: From Upyr’ to Vampir: The Slavic Vampire Myth in Russian Literature Abstract 350 words maximum: (PLEASE TYPE) The Slavic vampire myth traces back to pre-Orthodox folk belief, serving both as an explanation of death and as the physical embodiment of the tragedies exacted on the community. The symbol’s broad ability to personify tragic events created a versatile system of imagery that transcended its folkloric derivations into the realm of Russian literature, becoming a constant literary device from eighteenth century to post-Soviet fiction. The vampire’s literary usage arose during and after the reign of Catherine the Great and continued into each politically turbulent time that followed. The authors examined in this thesis, Afanasiev, Gogol, Bulgakov, and Lukyanenko, each depicted the issues and internal turmoil experienced in Russia during their respective times. By employing the common mythos of the vampire, the issues suggested within the literature are presented indirectly to the readers giving literary life to pressing societal dilemmas. The purpose of this thesis is to ascertain the vampire’s function within Russian literary societal criticism by first identifying the shifts in imagery in the selected Russian vampiric works, then examining how the shifts relate to the societal changes of the different time periods.
