William Hartson : Improve Your Chess (Teach Yourself) before purchasing it in order to gage whether or not it would be worth my time, and all praised Improve Your Chess (Teach Yourself):

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Excellent, excellent, excellent!By Jack ReaderI am one of those players who, while being stuck at a USCF 1500 range for years, still believe that with a right book/help could turn into a higher rated player. So, I keep buying books that fill up a bookshelf, but causing more and more disappointment as well (and I am STILL stuck at a 1500 range). Playing more is clearly not the answer as the faulty thinking is not corrected. Coaching is expensive. Real help and improvement is hard to find. This book turned out to be one of those rare gems that immediately changed the way I look at a position. Packed with brief, but relevant and helpful mini- lessons, divided into "Basic"(1-25), "Advanced" (26-50) and "Mastery" (51-75) sections it can induce a paradigm shift quickly. It has framed rules like "Weak players assess a position by counting the captured men; strong players consider only the men remaining on the board", diagrams (here you will still need a board to play out the solution) and excellent discussions (the one about the "bad bishop" is eye opening) along with arguing the sense in robotic moves ("pawn to rook three", "bishop to knight's five"). Most revealing is that while almost every chess book tries to repeat the same rules again and again (showing why early queen moves are wrong, etc) the truth is that rules are meant to be broken if the strategy requires so. "The aproach I have taken in this book is to try to expose the limitations of the elementary principles we have all learned..." writes the author. (Following the "castle early" rule could get you in front of a bishop/queen double barrel attack, so even should be well thought out and even delayed) The "tactics, tactics, tactics' fanatics are also quieted; higher rated players very rarely miss a knight fork and their positions rarely show clear advantage to either side after 20 moves. After many disappointing books here is one finally that bridges the knowledge between basic beginner books and more advanced ones, while giving an immediate boost to your thinking over the board. "If the examples I have chosen do not succeed in lifting your play and results to a higher plateau, then I hope they will at least improve the view from wherever you are stuck", Mr. Hartson, I could not agree with you more.
