Each of the sets include 32 pieces, with the exception of sets marked with a 2Q which come with an extra queen in each colour. All sets are supplied in card boxes. The white pieces of all our sets are made from Boxwood. As natural materials vary in shade and grain, the set you receive may differ slightly in appearance. Ebony is a mature, robust wood which is black in colour. Striped Ebony has flecks of rich brown graining showing through the Ebony black. Rosewood is a reddish brown wood, with a pronounced grain. Sheesham is a very natural coloured wood, medium brown with some graining, although not as pronounced as Rosewood. Antiqued Brown or Black indicates that the pieces are made of boxwood, with the black chessmen being stained to achieve the desired effect. We also stock a range of boxes to store your pieces in - see page 12. CLASSIC RANGE Traditional, well designed set. Simple yet clear. Felted and weighted. • A Combinatorial Game Theoretic Analysis of Chess Endgames
A COMBINATORIAL GAME THEORETIC ANALYSIS OF CHESS ENDGAMES QINGYUN WU, FRANK YU,¨ MICHAEL LANDRY 1. Abstract In this paper, we attempt to analyze Chess endgames using combinatorial game theory. This is a challenge, because much of combinatorial game theory applies only to games under normal play, in which players move according to a set of rules that define the game, and the last player to move wins. A game of Chess ends either in a draw (as in the game above) or when one of the players achieves checkmate. As such, the game of chess does not immediately lend itself to this type of analysis. However, we found that when we redefined certain aspects of chess, there were useful applications of the theory. (Note: We assume the reader has a knowledge of the rules of Chess prior to reading. Also, we will associate Left with white and Right with black). We first look at positions of chess involving only pawns and no kings. We treat these as combinatorial games under normal play, but with the modification that creating a passed pawn is also a win; the assumption is that promoting a pawn will ultimately lead to checkmate. Just using pawns, we have found chess positions that are equal to the games 0, 1, 2, ?, ", #, and Tiny 1. Next, we bring kings onto the chessboard and construct positions that act as game sums of the numbers and infinitesimals we found. The point is that these carefully constructed positions are games of chess played according to the rules of chess that act like sums of combinatorial games under normal play.

  • Attack with Black Valery Aveskulov
Attack with Black Valery Aveskulov Examines all White’s options after 1 d4 Nf6, and gives an aggressive reply to each of them An extraordinary wealth of new analysis and ideas Never willing to take existing theory on faith Sick of defending with Black? Never found a reliable way to fight for the initiative when White plays 1 d4? Aveskulov has put together a sound but ultra-aggressive repertoire based on gambits that have proved their worth in grandmaster play over many years. The Benko Gambit is dreaded by many 1 d4 players. Black gets very active piece-play, and even if White reaches a pawn-up endgame, he is often shocked to find he is worse due to Black’s intense positional pressure! If White avoids the Benko, that’s when we hit him with the Blumenfeld, sacrificing a pawn to set up a strong pawn-centre and attacking chances. • Chess2vec: Learning Vector Representations for Chess
Chess2vec: Learning Vector Representations for Chess Berk Kapicioglu Ramiz Iqbal∗ Tarik Koc OccamzRazor MD Anderson Cancer Center OccamzRazor [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] Louis Nicolas Andre Katharina Sophia Volz OccamzRazor OccamzRazor [email protected] [email protected] Abstract We conduct the first study of its kind to generate and evaluate vector representations for chess pieces. In particular, we uncover the latent structure of chess pieces and moves, as well as predict chess moves from chess positions. We share preliminary results which anticipate our ongoing work on a neural network architecture that learns these embeddings directly from supervised feedback. 1 Introduction In the last couple of years, advances in machine learning have yielded dramatic improvements in tasks as diverse as visual object classification [9], automatic speech recognition [7], machine translation [18], and natural language processing (NLP) [12]. A common thread among all these tasks is, as diverse as they may seem, they all involve processing input data, such as image, audio, and text, that have not traditionally been amenable to feature engineering. Modern machine learning methods that enabled these breakthroughs did so partly because they shifted the burden away from feature engineering, which is difficult for humans and requires domain expertise, towards designing models that automatically infer feature representations that are relevant for downstream tasks [1]. In this paper, we are interested in learning and studying feature representations of chess positions and pieces. Our work is inspired by how learning vector representation of words [12, 13], also known as word embeddings, yielded improvements in tasks such as syntactic parsing [16] and sentiment analysis [17].

  • Touring Problems – a Mathematical Approach
TOURING PROBLEMS – A MATHEMATICAL APPROACH VIPUL NAIK Abstract. The article surveys “touring”, a problem of “fun” math, and employs serious techniques to attack it. The text is suitable for high school students interested in Olympiad mathematics, as well as undergraduate students studying combinatorics and discrete math- ematics. It can be used to introduce the concept of a graph. A sequel to this article, on a similar analysis for “tiling” problems, shall also appear soon. 1. Prebeginnings 1.1. The knight’s tour. Chess pieces, with their variously defined moves, are a rich source of puzzles in recreational mathematics. Chess puzzles include the following types : • Nonattacking pieces puzzle : Given a piece with some moves defined, place as many copies of this piece as possible so that no two can kill each other. The proto- typical example of this is the eight queens problem – placing eight queens on the chessboard so that no two can kill each other. • Board domination puzzle : Given a piece with some moves defined, place as few copies of the piece as possible so that every square is either covered by some copy or is under direct attack by a copy of the piece. • Touring puzzle : Given a piece with some moves defined, construct a tour of the entire chessboard with that piece. The only nontrivial case of this for a standard chess piece is the knight’s tour. Each of these problems revolves around a piece, with certain moves defined for that piece. Instead of standard chess pieces, we may sometimes be interested in defining chess pieces with somewhat different moves.
