CARLY ROBINSON Editor-In-Chief This time last year, Chris Figliuzzi found himself as the only male participant in NAITSA’s Next Top Model. Having initially entered the contest as a joke, he never saw himself actually tak- ing first runner up and drawing so much from the experience. “I drunkenly entered after a night at the bar with some friends who thought it would be hilarious.” says Figliuzzi a former assistant entertainment editor at the Nugget. “I had no idea what to expect but it was really a great time. I was the only guy in the contest last year which did make me a bit nerv- ous about how seriously I would be taken.”

Gender stereotyped Modelling is one of those highly gender stereotyped activ- ities that bring out a lot of questions on gender roles in our soci- ety. While women who aspire to enter a male dominated indus- try are often met with criticism of their ability to perform in their career of choice, men who aspire to enter a female dominated one are more often than not met with simple ridicule. However, this year the number of males participating in the campus wide modelling contest is much closer to a proportional representation than last year. Going from one to 10 is a huge shift. Breaking with gender roles from time to time can leave you with new experiences. You never know what an experience will bring you, no matter how far out of your comfort zone. The hardest part was actually sitting for the makeup,” says Figliuzzi. “I had never had make up done before so it was weird, plus the eye liner felt like I was being stabbed in the eye!

‘Pretty funny’ “It was pretty funny, actually. I was always the last one to sit for hair and makeup but always the first one done. Since 2009, the festival has hosted the International Ice Carving Competition in which 10 teams of two from around the world are brought together to create amazing ice carvings. The teams had only three days to complete their sculptures and the warm weather created a hiccup in their carving schedule, as they had to work during the night. At the end of the third day, all sculptures were evaluated based on first impression, structure, skill and technique, con- cept and design, creativity and artistic merit. All ice carvings will be on display for the duration of the festival for the public to enjoy. The ice carving competition wasn’t the only event taking place at the festival.
