Flannery was the first head coach since Robin Slot in 2005 to lead the Dinos to the U SPORTS National Championship after finishing with a Canada West bronze medal in 2015. This was just the third appearance on the national stage in the team’s history. An alumnus of the Trinity Western University soccer program, Flannery came to the Dinos from the South West United Soccer Association, where he served as director of coach and player development – a position he will continue to fulfill. Formerly the technical director for soccer at National Sports Development, Flannery’s coaching pedigree also includes stints as head coach of the Mount Royal men’s team from 2005-07 and again from 2009-10. He was associate head coach at Trinity Western from 2007-09 and has been a consultant for both the Spartans men’s and women’s teams at his alma mater since that time.

The Aigles Bleus captured the national title in 1981, 1982, 1990 and 1995. The 1981-82 team was inducted to the wall in 1987 and the 1989-90 club in 2011.Meanwhile, the 1980-81 and 1981-82 teams are also honoured members of the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame (2004). In 1981, goals by Francois Bessette, his first with nine seconds left in the third period and second into an empty net at 19:59, gave the Jean Perron-coached Aigles Bleus a 4-2 win over the Dave King-coached Saskatchewan Huskies at Calgary. After Bessette’s goal broke the tie, King requested a stick measurement.The stick,which would have nullified the goal had it been illegal, was determined to be legal and the Huskies were penalized. Bessette then scored his second goal.Jean Sansfacon (6:08) and Michel Bechard (14:54) gave UdeM a 2-1 first period lead. The second period was scoreless, thanks to the sharp goaltending of Benoit Fortier,who faced 40 shots.Bob Dougall of the Huskies faced 33.

After a three­game absence due to injury, the fourth­year receiver tallied 175 yards and two touchdowns on 10 receptions. That total is just three yards short of Hillis’ career best. His longest play of the game was a 77­yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter. The top defensive player of the week honours belonged to defensive lineman Jack McEwen of the Calgary Dinos, while Alberta Golden Bears kicker Brent Arthur earned the special teams honour. Saskatchewan (3­3) is on the road this week, visiting the Dinos (5­1) on Saturday. Ken Achs inducted into the Canadian Drag Racing Hall of Fame Ken Achs has won numerous races and accolades in a drag racing career spanning back to the early 1960s. On Saturday he added another award to his shelf with his induction into the Canadian Drag Racing Hall of Fame.     M E D I A A D V I S O R Y ______________________________________________________________________ January 23, 2007 For Immediate Release The Duckworth Challenge: Winnipeg’s Two Universities Battle for Sport Supremacy WINNIPEG — On January 24, 2007 volleyball teams from The University of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba will go head-to-head in an ongoing rivalry dubbed the Duckworth Challenge. Participants can get into the spirit of the cross-town rivalry starting at 5:00 p.m. with a real bison burger and a beverage for only $3.00. The games get underway at 6:00 p.m. with the women’s team, followed by the men at 7:30 p.m. The evening’s events will be held at the Duckworth Centre, located at 400 Spence Street at Ellice Avenue. Admission to the game is FREE with a contribution to the UWSA Foodbank. Those who make a donation of a non-perishable food item will also be entered to win a DVD player and other great prizes. Regular admission is $8 (adults), free for children 6 and under, and $3 for UWinnipeg students with a valid student ID card. The Duckworth Challenge began in 1992 as the brainchild of Dr. Henry E. Duckworth (UWinnipeg President, 1971-81 and University of Manitoba Chancellor, 1986-92). The Duckworth Challenge, named in his honour, offers an annual opportunity for friendly competition between The University of Winnipeg Wesmen and the University of Manitoba Bisons.
