2019 SMASH Program Cover Art by Jamie Jumadiao, Grade 12 Program printed by Konica Minolta MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Welcome to Louis St. Laurent….proud home of the Barons! We are pleased to welcome some of the best High School volleyball talent in the province to this 31st edition of SMASH. The spirit of competition, the integration into the school setting, and the pride that results when teams represent their schools is an incredible experience for any athlete. The entire school rallies behind their team and the school spirit that is generated cannot be measured! We are confident that your participation in SMASH will be a highlight of your High School athletic career! To the athletes and coaches, we wish you the best of health and success in your quest for the honor of becoming SMASH champions. To the organizing committee and volunteers, without whose incredible spirit and investment of time this event could not take place, thank you! To our sponsors, whose support of this tournament is consistently so generous, we tip our hats to you once again! To the LSL school community, for your enthusiasm, school spirit and commitment to this incredible tradition, cheer loud, show your pride, and thank you for being the awesome student body that you are! As we begin our tournament, I invite each and every participant to fully embrace the many offerings that SMASH provides, and wish you an outstanding weekend! Go Barons!! Michelle Dupuis Principal Louis St. Laurent Louis St. Laurent is excited to welcome all of you into our school. On behalf of the organizing committees, administration, staff and students at Louis St. Laurent School, we would like to extend a warm welcome to all the teams competing, their friends and families and to all other spectators attending the 31st Annual SMASH Invitational Volleyball Tournament. With 20 of the best 3A teams competing from throughout Alberta, this tournament should be very competitive. By the time a Champion is crowned on Saturday evening we will have witnessed some great volleyball. Good luck to all the teams and we sincerely hope you enjoy your experience at Louis St. Laurent School. The staging of such an event can only be done with the help of an enormous number of volunteers. I would like to thank all the sponsors who have contributed funding, products, and services; the parents of our team members and all the staff and students of Louis St. Laurent who have been so giving of their time and effort. Play hard, have fun and make memories!! If there is anything I can help you with throughout the weekend, please let me know, I will do my best to accommodate you. Cheers, and let the tournament begin!! Tournament Chair Jaret Peel Louis St. Laurent School Varsity Women's Volleyball Coach SMASH Tournament Chair LSL Athletic Director Cell: (780) 554-4333 Email: [email protected] It started with an idea. In 1988 a former student of Louis St. Laurent School (Dan Desmarais) was coaching the Varsity Men’s Volleyball Team and heard about other schools going to tournaments. He was frustrated that his team nev- er went to any tournaments and simply made a comment to the Athletic Direc- tor… “Why don’t we host our own tournament?” At the time, Louis St. Laurent hosted no tournaments and staff thought this would be a great idea to help build school spirit and showcase the school. The very next year, SMASH was born! In 1989, Ron Woytiuk chaired the first ever SMASH tournament. Previously he helped St. Joseph High School start the Father Michael Troy Basketball Tourna- ment and with the help of Tom Solyom, SMASH was modeled after the Troy tournament. It began as a local tournament and progressed to being open to Catholic schools from across Alberta. Today SMASH has evolved into a premier 3A volleyball event, and a preview of the Provincial Championship. From the start, the aim was to put together a first class tournament (every athlete was given a gift that was donated by our sponsors, a team dinner was supplied, and each team had two hosts/hostesses). At first a Friday night dance was held for the high school and competing athletes. As high school dances slowly became less popular among students, it was replaced with SMASHFEST in 2003. Playing the opening game each year in front of the student body helps to entrench the spirit of the tournament into the fabric of LSL. A TRADITION of EXCELLENCE yet friendly competition has continued today. This entire school event is the highlight of our Athletic calendar!! Today there are almost 200 student and teacher volunteers spanning all departments of our school that make SMASH a SUCCESS!! OPENING CEREMONIES FRIDAY, October 25th, 2019 9:00 AM LOUIS ST.
