By Christie Boeder ard to believe, the Boeders were in the ‘Fatherland’ and did is really way more typical and warmer weather earlier in March NOT visit Stuttgart last month while visiting our daughter and April just isn’t normal for Minnesota. Meeting her in Munich meant a quick week of visiting and playing tourist so we just did not have the time to head north - and with the new museum not open yet, it was not a difficult decision to say ‘another time’ for heading to Stuttgart! Munich, Bavaria, Fussen, Garmsch-Partenkirchen were all fabulous cities and locales to visit, explore and enjoy. Great food, very nice people, frequent trains (with only one goof by the mostly efficient transportation system - the train going into Garmsche was delayed over 2 hours due to a computer glitch so Your preferred collision repair & paint we spent 2 plus hours hanging around the train station of a very center for Porsches and other fine small town in the valley), historical buildings, castles and churches kept us very busy. Lots of Bavarian ‘atmosphere’ which was just automobiles since 1958 kitschy enough to let you know you weren’t in Kansas anymore. n Factory paint matching And of course plenty of beer halls to take that well-deserved break. n Paintless dent repair by Juergen’s Dent Kraft Plus watching the waiters in their lederhosen was great (Kirsten n I-Car & A.S.E. certified technicians n would agree to that!).     Chapter Six – Trouble and Triumph in the Thirties Chrysler Corporation has pioneered many of the fundamental and lasting engineering advances in automobile design and construction in the last ten years. Its newest development, the Airflow design of 1934 Chrysler and DeSoto models, has already met with an enthusiastic public response. —Ninth Annual Report of Chrysler Corporation, Year Ended December 31, 1933. February 9, 1934. For the Chrysler Corporation, the years from 1934 through 1940 were more traumatic and troubled than the early Depression years. Three events clouded the exuberance the Company otherwise evidenced with the success of the Plymouth, which was so handily helping it to survive the Great Depression. These were the introduction of the Airflow, the struggles accompanying the birth of the United Auto Workers and the retirement and death of Walter P. Chrysler. The most celebrated of the three was the serious miscalculation called the Airflow. Certainly most accounts of the Company’s fortunes in the mid-1930s center around Chrysler’s introduction of this revolutionary car in 1934 in its Chrysler and DeSoto lines. Walter Chrysler, the engineering trio of Zeder-Skelton-Breer and most of the Company’s top executives believed that the Airflow would make Chrysler the industry leader, surpassing not only Ford, which it had already done, but also General Motors. Instead, the Airflow models were a huge sales disappointment, and the Airflow could well have sent the Company to its grave between 1934 and 1937, just when the rest of the auto industry was enjoying an economic recovery. The second disruption in Chrysler’s operations came in 1937, when its hourly employees organized under the banner of the United Automobile Workers (UAW)-CIO and won a contract with the automaker.

    Introduction to R&C Database Compilation & Index I have a long history and fondness for Rod & Custom magazine. This is the first magazine I purchased at age 10, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I often refer back to my collection, but find it hard to quickly lay my hands on a given article. This is for fellow HAMB members who share a love for this little magazine. This Index covers Rod & Custom Magazine from May 1953 through May 1974. I stopped at 1974 since R&C went out of print then. R&C was restarted in December 1988 and lasted until October 2014. This index is created for general reference, technical reference, research, tracing automobile histories, and genealogy. I have attempted to use a consistent categorization or article grouping scheme across all 20+ years, even though editors or previous compilations may not have used this convention. This index contains the following specific information: Title of each article along with a descriptive supplement such as club affiliation, noted customizers, past owners, professions, etc. The author’s and/or photographer’s name where space allowed. Featured vehicle year, make, model, & engine and/or engine displacement where available or where space allowed. Vehicle owner name, city and state. Where the country is other than the United States, I listed the country Product manufacturer name, city and state. Address may be included if space allowed. The month and page number of each feature article or photograph. The index is sorted by year, and a title at the top of each page indicates which year.
