  • 1941 Buick Roadmaster Sedan from North Carolina by Earl D
The Story of our 1941 Buick Roadmaster sedan from North Carolina By Earl D. Beauchamp, Jr. If I had to go back to the very beginning, it would be 1952 when I was 14 years old. That is when I first became virally interested in old cars. Now old cars, to me, were the years I remembered during my short lifetime, which was the 1930s and 1940s. Most of the books and magazines of the time, specifically MOTOR TREND, dealt with cars specified as “Classic Cars”, as defined by the fledgling Classic Car Club of America (CCCA). I religiously read Robert Gottlieb’s monthly column called “Classic Comments”. Around 1953 Mr. Gottlieb wrote and published a book called “Classic Cars”. I believe it was in that book where he made the statement that “no Buick was ever a “Classic Car” or something to that effect. Well, my family was a Buick family, or had been until hard times caused my parents to trade their 1939 Buick in on a 1951 Plymouth (in 1958 they went back to Buick for the rest of their lives). That statement by Mr. Gottlieb stuck in my young craw, and I never got over it. In 1955 I was allowed to get my first car, and it was a 1939 Buick Special sedan optionalized with dual sidemount fenders and a full pleated leather interior. It had belonged to a family friend. Now, I was convinced this car had to be a “Full Classic” and I wrote to Mr. Gottlieb and asked him. Then, in 1956 he wrote a second book called “Classics and Special Interest Cars.” Although he never answered my letter; in that book he mentioned a car like mine and said it was not a “Classic” but would be considered a “Special Interest Car”.

  • Chapter Six – Trouble and Triumph in the Thirties
Chapter Six – Trouble and Triumph in the Thirties Chrysler Corporation has pioneered many of the fundamental and lasting engineering advances in automobile design and construction in the last ten years. Its newest development, the Airflow design of 1934 Chrysler and DeSoto models, has already met with an enthusiastic public response. —Ninth Annual Report of Chrysler Corporation, Year Ended December 31, 1933. February 9, 1934. For the Chrysler Corporation, the years from 1934 through 1940 were more traumatic and troubled than the early Depression years. Three events clouded the exuberance the Company otherwise evidenced with the success of the Plymouth, which was so handily helping it to survive the Great Depression. These were the introduction of the Airflow, the struggles accompanying the birth of the United Auto Workers and the retirement and death of Walter P. Chrysler. The most celebrated of the three was the serious miscalculation called the Airflow. Certainly most accounts of the Company’s fortunes in the mid-1930s center around Chrysler’s introduction of this revolutionary car in 1934 in its Chrysler and DeSoto lines. Walter Chrysler, the engineering trio of Zeder-Skelton-Breer and most of the Company’s top executives believed that the Airflow would make Chrysler the industry leader, surpassing not only Ford, which it had already done, but also General Motors. Instead, the Airflow models were a huge sales disappointment, and the Airflow could well have sent the Company to its grave between 1934 and 1937, just when the rest of the auto industry was enjoying an economic recovery. The second disruption in Chrysler’s operations came in 1937, when its hourly employees organized under the banner of the United Automobile Workers (UAW)-CIO and won a contract with the automaker.

  • Introduction to R&C Database Compilation & Index
Introduction to R&C Database Compilation & Index I have a long history and fondness for Rod & Custom magazine. This is the first magazine I purchased at age 10, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I often refer back to my collection, but find it hard to quickly lay my hands on a given article. This is for fellow HAMB members who share a love for this little magazine. This Index covers Rod & Custom Magazine from May 1953 through May 1974. I stopped at 1974 since R&C went out of print then. R&C was restarted in December 1988 and lasted until October 2014. This index is created for general reference, technical reference, research, tracing automobile histories, and genealogy. I have attempted to use a consistent categorization or article grouping scheme across all 20+ years, even though editors or previous compilations may not have used this convention. This index contains the following specific information: Title of each article along with a descriptive supplement such as club affiliation, noted customizers, past owners, professions, etc. The author’s and/or photographer’s name where space allowed. Featured vehicle year, make, model, & engine and/or engine displacement where available or where space allowed. Vehicle owner name, city and state.
