Work on your Mother’s Day Memories

Plan your telephone call to say hello to mom this Sunday. Better yet, if possible, make a visit with a card or even some flowers or maybe some brownies or a special treat. Moms deserve to be treated special. Take her out to lunch or dinner if possible. It doesn’t have to be Sunday, maybe Saturday would work better. Tell mom what she means to you. Let her know that you love her and that you give thanks for all she has done for you. Let her know she was a good mother and that you are grateful for everything. Moms need to hear it and you’ll be glad for everything you do for your mother. However, you may not be so fortunate. My mother Eula Hinkle Mollette, passed away many years ago. My son’s mother Karen Mollette passed away in 2002. The years go by quickly. For too many, Mother’s Day can be a sad day because mom is no longer here. All you have is your many memories and too often memories are filled with mixed emotions. You remember what was wonderful, but you may start thinking about all you wish you had done or could do if you had her today. If you have your mother today; then celebrate in every way you can. Sadly over 200,000 women are in prison or jail in the United States today. Eighty percent of these women have minor children. Mother’s Day is a painful day for these women and their families. Millions of children live with parents who are addicted to alcohol or drugs or both. These children are raised in sad environments where they have had to emotionally and often even financially help their parents. Often, these daily struggles make it difficult to celebrate the “picture perfect” day that is touted by the flower and card com- panies. They may go to buy a Mother’s Day card but just cannot find one that really expresses how they feel. Many children have been raised in painful, abusive envi- ronments and Mother’s Day is depressing because they can’t conjure up that many good memories of mom. Many of these children want mom to be well and healthy. They want to know that they are loved by mom. Unfortunately, there are so many adults who have mothers who could never turn their lives around. They are often ex- hausted from trying to make “Mom and family” work. Dr. Glenn Mollette Mother’s Day is our opportunity to try to do the right things again. Using words like, “I care, love, appreciate, thank you” and any that express your heart’s desire to be connected are worthwhile expressions. When you do the best you can do, you can at least look back and know that you tried. When Mom and our loved ones are no longer with us then all we have are our memories. If you have any time left to work on your Mother’s Day memories, you won’t regret it in the years to come.

Dr. Glenn Mollette is a graduate of numerous schools including Georgetown College, Southern and Lexington Seminaries in Kentucky. He is the author of 12 books including Uncommon Sense. His column is published weekly in over 600 publications in all 50 states. Does COVID-19 vaccination impact blood donation eligibility?

This spring as COVID-19 vaccines become more available and people resume some of their favorite activities, the American Red Cross is reminding the public that the need for blood remains. Healthy individuals are encouraged to make a blood donation appointment now. But what about those who’ve received a COVID-19 vaccine – can they donate? As long as donors are symptom-free, feeling well and can provide the vaccine manufacturer’s name, there’s no waiting period required after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine currently authorized in the U.S. Additional blood donation eligibility information is available at RedCrossBlood.org/Eligibility. Three reasons not to wait to donate: • Donors, especially those with type O blood, are needed in May to help ensure blood products are available for patients now and into summer. • Those who come to give blood, platelets or plasma in May will be automatically entered for a chance to win a travel trailer camper that sleeps five, powered by Suburban Propane. • Plus, those who make it in to give May 1-15 will receive a $5 Amazon.com Gift Card by email, courtesy of Suburban Propane. Schedule an appointment now to give blood and make it a summer full of life for patients. Appointments can be made by down- loading the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device. Health insights for donors The Red Cross is testing blood, platelet and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies. The test may indicate if the donor’s im- mune system has produced antibodies to this coronavirus, regardless of whether they developed symptoms. Testing may also identify the presence of antibodies developed after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine. Plasma from routine blood and platelet donations that test positive for high levels of antibodies may be used as convalescent plasma to meet potential future needs of COVID-19 patients. Convales- cent plasma is a type of blood product collected from COVID-19 survivors who have antibodies that may help patients who are ac- tively fighting the virus. The Red Cross is not testing donors to diagnose illness, re- ferred to as a diagnostic test. Child rapist receives life sentence Defendant Victor Torres, 31 years old of Santa Rosa, was sentenced by the Honorable Mark Urioste to serve a term of 25 years to life in state prison after pleading “no contest” earlier this month to multiple charges of child sexual assault. District Attorney Ravitch stated, “This defendant took advantage of the trust created by being a family member to gain access to the young victims. Their strength in coming forward against this predator is the reason he has been held accountable and will be removed from society for a significant period. We can only hope this outcome will provide the family some assistance in their healing.” In May of 2018, the three sisters, aged 8, 10 and 13, reported ongoing sexual abuse committed against them by Torres, who was a relative residing in the girls’ home. The case against Torres was set to proceed to trial in April 2021 when Torres entered into an agreement with the District Attorney’s Office in which he pled no contest to seven felony offenses committed against the three children. Specifically, Torres was convicted of four charges related to the 8-year-old, including forcible rape when she was seven years old. Torres was also convicted of sodomizing the 10-year-old child and committing a separate lewd act against her. Finally, Torres was convicted of committing a lewd act against the 13-year-old child. In a victim impact statement read at sentencing, the victims’ father stated that Torres “ruined my life and the life of my three daughters.” In exchange for Torres’s plea, which allowed the case to proceed to sentencing without the victims having to testify at trial, the District Attorney’s Office agreed to a sentence of 25 years to life in prison. Recent California legislation now allows “elderly” prison inmates to be considered for parole after serving only 20 years of their sentence. Penal Code section 3055 originally went into effect in 2018, and with few exceptions allowed for inmates who reached 60 years of age and served 25 years of their sentence to be considered for release back into the community on parole. This “elderly parole” provision was amended in 2020 by the California Legislature to now allow almost all inmates who have reached the age of 50 and served only 20 years of their sentence – regardless of how long the sentence is - to be considered for parole. These early parole provisions apply to offenders like Torres. The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Andrew Lukas. Detective Tim Raymond of the Santa Rosa Police Department headed the investigation. Show your support and subscribe to The Community VOICE TODAY Only $50 per year

For many, being in quarantine was a time to pick up new hobbies, finish the series they’d always planned to watch, and spend more time with family or on the internet with friends. But, for me, it was a time when I aged out of the foster care system. I turned 21, March 26, 2020, ten days after California’s original stay-at-home order. Of course, during those first two weeks, I was barely home because I had been asked to leave the home I was renting due to the pandemic. I was told there would be a private and safer location as long as I paid three months’ rent upfront – an unexpected cost that would challenge anyone. As I scrambled to get together the money to move into new housing, I tried to get excited about this “fresh start.” At the same time, I was told I needed to meet with a social worker to successfully exit extended foster care. At first, I thought nothing of it; I was more concerned with how I was going to get a new bed and fix up a place to live in the middle of a pandemic when many stores were closed or shut down early. After many dysfunctional trips to Walmart to furnish my new studio apartment, buy food and get other basics, I realized my savings were quickly being depleted with no future source of income. At the time, no one was sure what the quarantine would entail or how long it would last. I wasn’t officially laid off from a job so I could collect unemployment, I was Jasmine Harris just in between. And that’s where I’ve been ever since, in between – what some people say, between a rock and a very hard place. I’m 21, on my own, to navigate a very complicated and often unfriendly system that does not include young people like me. Any plan I may have had for my future outside of the foster care system was immediately put on hold due to Covid-19. Now I had no social worker, no roommates, no guidance, and no idea of what was to come. It was just me alone in my room with Zoom University. Month after month, counting the days, waiting for some kind of sign of when things may get better. And unfortunately, they didn’t. The two- week quarantine quickly became six months. Eventually, my landlord could no longer afford to rent to me at the lowered “Covid rates,” and I was told to pay up or go. This is the reality for people all across the country, especially young people and especially current and former foster youth. Like many, I turned to government resources like unemployment and stimulus funds. Being a 21-year-old student-worker didn’t leave many options available to me. No family to turn to, friends all quarantined away, and the social worker who had so diligently cared for me nowhere to be seen. Isn’t it supposed to be about helping people help themselves? In late December 2020, the United States Congress passed legislation on COVID relief that made aid available for young people who have been in foster care and desperately need help making a transi- tion into living as an independent, self-sufficient adult. The State of Oregon quickly took advantage of the new funding and announced last week that expanded funds would be made available to support higher education for young people who are experienc- ing or experienced foster care at age 14 or older and who are not yet 27. And additional funds of up to $7,000 per student, are available to help eligible young people access housing, transportation costs, and technology needs through the pandemic. Some of these funds will be by direct payment to qualified young adults in the state. The state of California has already received over $47 million in the education funds, under what is called the Chafee grant program. Of this, 5.8 million dollars would go to foster youth students in the form of ETV or Education Training Vouchers. The rest should go directly to youth so they can spend in a manner that best suits their needs. Oregon put together a plan, now California has an opportunity to act. Direct cash payments would allow youth to have some autonomy while maneuvering through this year-long pandemic experience.
