Ben Holladay (1819-1887) By Unknown Ben Holladay was a businessman involved in the stagecoach and railroad industry in the West. He was responsible for many of the stageline roads and railtracks in western Oregon. Born in 1819 in Kentucky, Holladay moved with his family to Missouri as a young boy. In Weston, Missouri, Holladay operated a store and a hotel, doing business with Indians in Kansas. He married Notley Ann Calvert when he was 23. After she died in 1873, Holladay married Esther Campbell. When the Mexican American War broke out in 1846, he supplied U.S. Army General Stephen Kearny's forces. After the war ended in 1848, Holladay bought surplus army supplies at bargain prices, and over the next several years he sold these supplies in Utah and California. In 1862 Holladay bought the Overland Mail Express, whose owners were in debt to him. He expanded the company and by 1864 controlled most of the stage and freight traffic between the Missouri River and Salt Lake City. Holladay also had a federal mail contract worth nearly one million dollars annually. He sold his stage routes to Wells Fargo and went into the railroad business, beginning with his Oregon and California Railroad Company. He began in 1868 to construct tracks from Portland along the east side of the Willamette River in competition with the "Westsiders" to win a contract to build a north-south route to California. Competing for both traffic and a federal land grant, the two sides agreed that whichever company first built twenty miles of line would buy out the other. -

On view September 21, 2012– February 3, 2013 Exhibition From September 21, 2012, to February 3, 2013, the Bard Graduate Center: Decorative Arts, Design History, Mate- rial Culture (BGC) will present Circus and the City: New York, 1793–2010, an exhibition that uses New York City as a lens through which to explore the extraordinary de- velopment and spectacular pageantry of the American circus. Through a wide variety of ephemera, images, and artifacts, the exhibition documents the history of the circus in the city, from the seminal equestrian displays of the late eighteenth century through the iconic late nineteenth-century American railroad circus to the Big Apple Circus of today. After two months in a refugee camp in Austria, the Kubínek family was granted asylum in Canada and it was there, in St. Catharines, Ontario, that Tomas, age 5, witnessed his first circus. He became passionately interested in clowns, circus, theater and magic and his perplexed yet well‐adjusted parents took him to see every show that passed through town. -

How a Boy Earned Money Fifty Years Ago William C. Smith Edited by Julie Smith Pyle* “Fifty years ago,” wrote William C. Smith around 1915, “I was a boy in a moderately well-to-do home, located at the edge of an aver- age county seat town of the Corn Belt of Indiana. My training was such that . before I had entered my teens, I was hunting jobs by which I could earn money.” Smith’s account of his early entrepreneuri- al activities provides not only an engaging picture of a young boy’s ingenuity but also a description of life in a small rural community in central Indiana during the late 1860s and 1870s. The beliefs of the midwestern middle-class small-towdfarm family pervade the remi- niscences: the work ethic, class distinctions, emphasis on education, importance of and dependence on family. Readers will find valuable information on the thriving local markets in which Smith partici- pated, the excitement of the circus coming to town, and the rela- tionship between town and country residents. Smith‘s recollections center on the community in and around the town of Kokomo in Howard County, Indiana, approximately fifty miles north of the capital city of Indianapolis. Founded around 1843, Kokomo had by 1870 become a thriving county seat with a popula- tion of 2,177. Although Smith described “civilization”there as “crude”- the town had no waterworks, gas or electricity, or paved streets or sidewalks-it was a typical small Indiana market center of the time. County histories boasted of wide, tree-lined streets and praised cit- izens for their “earnestness and enterprise.”’ Smith’s parents, William B. -
